I would see no reason to tighten it up. As long as you use the teflon sleved
throw out bearing the friction of it moving along the clutch is minimal. It
doesn't move that far any way.

Rare is a person who can take on an unroadable project car without
eventually losing interest. Don't feel bad, I too am NOT such a
person. #5939 is definitely a fixer upper (my goal is first place in
the "You've Got To Be Kidding" category at Pigeon Forge), but it does
run. That is what keeps me in the race. If I couldn't drive it, and
yes even show it off (sagging headliners and all), it would surely end
up on eBay alongside that other fine specimen.
Roadable project cars are out there, perhaps not this week but quite
possibly the next. Was unhurriedly surfing online sources when my
steed popped up on a short eBay auction at a price too good to miss
(DMCNEWS website was my preferred marketplace). Had it not, would
probably have ended up with the car that sold in Charlotte late 2002
(THAT seemed to be a good deal, in my own backyard). Of course there
was that other attractive Pennsylvania car earlier in the fall...
DeLoreans are uncommon, but they aren't rare. That's one of their
beauties -- they put automotive history within grasp of us little
people. Are several DML'ers who have cycled through 2 or 3 (this
concept of SELLING a car is bit hard for me to grasp). If DeLo's were
truly difficult to obtain they'd all be locked away like precious
jewels. Of course you'll never find one without looking. But don't
feel like time's running out, or like someone else will snap up the
last one.
Related programming note: any DML'ers who haven't read Dave Stragand's
website need to set aside an evening to do so. Will take at least two
hours to read it all, but is definitely worth the time. Way funnier
than anything on sitcom TV. I've even recommended to non-DeLo'ers.

I have two fully functional solenoids that I can part with right
now. I switched to actuators instead so that's why I have them on
hand. I just did the mod on the door locks so you can buy them from
me, one or both.

Dan,
You should be able to find a replacement heater valve at about any
auto parts store. I found an exact match at O'Reilly's by taking my
old valve I doing a matcy-up for mountings and vaccum motion.
There are two separate motions: Vaccum closes & vaccuum opens. Be
sure you get the right one.

Don't get discouraged Adam. I know what it's like. I'd wanted a DeLorean since I was a small child. But it took me being very active in the DeLorean community for 2 years before my parents finally got the idea that my desire for a DeLorean wasn't going to ever go away... and that I had done all necessary homework to own one. I met a DeLorean owner when I was 17, and he pointed me to the DML. It took two years of involvement in the list, going to numerous DeLorean gatherings, meeting countless owners, and going to look at many cars before my parents finally caved. In the end I'm very glad they made me wait. There were a couple of cars I wanted BAD when I was first started out... I guess mainly I wanted them because they were in my price range at the time. I look back now and am so thankful my parents made me hold out... because I looked at some seriously skanky DeLoreans... LOL. I ended up buying the type of DeLorean I wanted in the end (grey interior, 5-speed), and the car turned out to be the previous owners only car (it was his daily driver). The car came with receipts from the past two years totalling more than I even bought the car for... which was $12,000. So in the end waiting was a good thing. I not only got the type of car I wanted cosmetically, but I got an extremely good running driver as well. So think of waiting as a blessing in disguise. Don't give up... amass knowledge of the car as much as possible... and keep badgering Dad. At some point he'll see how knowledgable you are about the car, and he might just decide you're ready to own one! Good luck on your path to ownership, and let us list members know if there's anything we can do to aid you.

Don't hold my feet to the fire, but I think my neverending vacuum leak
may FINALLY be solved. Both valve covers have their final torque, and
the car is idling without wavering! Driver's side did not have a
noticeable gap between timing chain cover and head mating surface, but
was sucking air anyway. Passenger side definitely did. I'm just glad
timing chain cover itself is tight (REALLY didn't want to remove back
end of car).
If you're chasing a vacuum leak as I was, check every surface, not
just intake and upper air assembly.
Related note: removed A/C compressor altogether for driver's side
valve cover. Replaced O rings this time (58 cents at the hardware
store -- what WAS I thinking). Vacuumed system and recharged this
afternoon. Holding steady @ 35 PSI (low side) and 52 degrees.
Hopefully will drop as passenger compartment cools down. Since we're
entering A/C season, my R134 methods are written up on DMCNEWS website
for like minded. Generate a lot of controversy among R12 purists, but
the way I figure: if your system isn't putting out now, what do you
have to lose? Only change is freon itself (all factory components
re-used). If you don't like R134 performance, bleed it back out and go
back to R12. Difference is about $120 (to R134's benefit)...

I removed and repaired my old shift computer about a year ago. The
two large caps inside were sure enough broken. I replaced them with
50V heavy duty tantalum caps. The computer was much easier to reomve
and reinstall than I had thought. it took about 2 hours being
carefull and all.

Is anyone else severely dissappointed with their Delorean World
Magazine? I think someone earlier mentioned that their wife
commented on how it looked like a travel magazine. It does. It is
not worth it for me. I just got Deloreans magazine and I was
pleased. It is inexpensive and comprehensive. I found nothing of
use in DW magazine, not even the handy Montreal city tour planning
card. Yet in Deloreans magazine, I needed to replace my accumulator,
my fuel sender, and most important, my steering column bushing.
These subjects just happened to be covered in this issue with
excellent pictures and step by step instructions. I also love new
products that are coming out and they always cover this, even
reporting on Pearce designs showing off their new stainless steel
frame. I also found out how low priced the new gas charged door
lift pistons are. They actually came down in price. I want to know
if anyone else shares the same feelings as I. I will be giving my
issue of DW to a travel agency, maybe they are looking for things to
do in Montreal. Just my opinion.

I think it should be pointed out, for the benefit of the Johnson family,
prospective buyers of their cars and past and future Millennium concours
competitors that VIN #4055 has never been a competitor or first place winner
in a Millennium Concours. I do believe that the last DOA concours, which all
will agree was a much less detailed affair, was held at the Los Angeles Expo
in 1998.
I don't want to sound as if I am denigrating the Johnson's car - I have
never seen it but I am sure that it's a nice car. But the difference between
a nice car (even a DOA concours winner) and a Millennium concours winner are
light years apart, as I believe all the judges, competitors and witnesses to
any Millennium event will attest.
In the next week or so, a web site (http://www.millenniumconcours.com) will
be up and will list all the previous winners and locations, as well as have
details about past and future event, judging criteria for prospective
competitors, information for those considering judging and more.
