Subject: Fluid for Girling hydraulic components
AMC used Girling master/slave cylinders in their clutch systems
1980-1986. Factory literature (including big tech manuals) only
mentions AMC brand brake fluid (of course) or any other fluid meeting
DOT *3* specs. My high school car (still active in the stable) ran for
years on various house brands no sweat.
I think several things hurt Girling component users:
1) Only lubricant between rubber seal and metal cylinder is brake
fluid. If the component isn't used often, surface on far side of
piston travel dries out. Rubber drags across dry metal for at least
first petal push, resulting in accelerated wear (notice only outer
tapered edge of seal actually touches cylinder wall).
2) Girling components are made out of pot metal, not aluminum (at
least AMC's were). Will rust and pit. Only protection over piston
travel is layer of brake fluid. If not used often, rubber seal may
also end up dragging across rough surface.
3) Rebuilt components are honed, resulting in slightly oversized
cylinders. You'd think slightly larger seals would also be used but
appear not to be (at least not by Brakeware, or whatever brand has the
stoplight on it's label, sold by Autozone and Advance). After living
off factory slave cylinder for a decade or so, started burning through
rebuilt units every 2-3 years. Only a NOS cylinder purchased at
national convention 1998 has performed like the original (makes sense,
eh?).
As mentioned by David T, changing fluid regularly is probably more
important than any particular brand (folklore notwithstanding). To
that I'd add regular component use.

Clarification? I believe John is telling you to suck on a hose with
your mouth (need a new piece because one to vacuum cut off solenoid is
too short). If the diaphragm has a hole, you'll be able to keep
sucking breath after breath. If it's good, you'll only get one breath
then it'll hold. This same technique works excellent when cap is off
-- you can actually see the rotor button move (spark advance diaphragm
can be good but disconnected from plate. Don't know about PRV, but
older Fords only held on by world's smallest E-clip).

I use similar technique, but remove paint while still wet (wouldn't
sanding block mess up chrome?). Mount emblem on a small carboard box
so you'll have something to hold other than emblem itself. I prime
with Dap Galv-A-Grip first -- only product I've ever found that'll
stick to galvanized metal, also works great on chrome. While wet, rub
faces clean with low pile cloth barely moist with paint thinner (you
don't want thinner dripping from cloth into painted nooks & crannies).
Repeat with flat black top coat (plain old Rustoleum works for me).
Flat looks 10,000 times better than gloss. Added benefit -- all that
rubbing with paint thinner does excellent job of restoring luster to
chrome.

Subject: UPDATE Vacuum Advance Problem
The vacuum advance solenoid was fine, so we pulled the whole distributor
assembly and replaced it with the other one I had from the old engine. When
I initially tested the old distributor assembly I thought it was bad,
however I wasn't putting enough vacuum on it to get it to advance.
With the old assmebly on the new engine everything worked great. The
ignition advanced when it was suposed to, so life is good. A couple more
things to inspect and go over and the car and it should be ready to roll.

I am just putting the finishing touches on tomorrow's event and the
weather looks to be WET! (Maybe it will clear in the afternoon?) It is
going on rain or shine and many people have contacted me to say they
will be comming anyway. I have gotten word from the local Police Dept
and they have asked that we keep the cars off the street in front of
the shop. The diner next door has allowed us to use their parking lot
so stay out of the Bank's spots and off the street. Last chance to
call Rob Grady for any parts you need. I will have a cell phone on
starting at 8:00 am for anyone getting lost. 201-320-4651 When you
arrive go directly into the diner parking lot and check in at The Auto
Works. Early birds (before 9:00am can meet in the diner). I look
foward to seeing you all! For those of you that won't get the car wet
wee are expecting GREAT weather Sunday! Meet at the Marriott before
11:00 am, earlier if you are having breakfast with us. Any locals
(Northern NJ, Rockland county) that are interested there is a dinner
tonight nearby so call for directions.

Never really paid any attention to my front emblem (been too busy at
other end of the car), so went outside with a left handed flashlight
to introduce myself. Is indeed grained on flat surfaces -- sandpaper
would probably be OK. Beveled edges might be a problem (appear bright
finish), but those could be a challenge any way you paint. Guess I'm
too used to chromed pot metal emblems so common at turn of the decade
(which sometimes look better WITHOUT black mask. My Lincolns have a
couple of those).
How about letters on late model hoods -- are they grained or bright
finish?
PS: This has nothing to do with emblems, but couple of days ago
checked out X-Rays of my shoulder from ER (didn't know you could do
that -- too cool). Uploaded one to #5939's photo page. Will only leave
it over the weekend to conserve server space, but this is why I
currently wish my D was an automatic. In theory am back to shifting
gears by June...
