Subject: Keels 'n Wheels
There probably isn't enough advance notice to do any good...
but for those of you coming into Houston for their Open House, there will be
a remarkable Concours d'Elegance in my backyard, just outside of the Johnson
Space Center. It's the weekend before DMCH's OH (May 3rd).
It's called the Keels and Wheels for the classic boats and cars that will be
shown, including the only surviving Aerocar from the 50's (roads? it don't
need no stinking roads!). Astronaut Buzz Aldrin will be the Grand Marshall.
I don't know if any D's will be entered; unfortunately, I can't I have other
engagements later that day.

Afterward, y'all can come over to the Space Center for the annual JSC chili
cook-off. I will be there with some officemates (geeks) with our
"Mega-Hurtz" chili (not-quite famous for "Overclocking the Cow"). That has
absolutely nothing to do with our car... it's just fun to burn off those
taste buds.
After that fun weekend is over it's back to work for me. I have to pay by
working the next and missing much of the OH. Sigh. :)

Another term for "false air" is "vacuum leak". With the exception of
PCV, *EVERY* ounce of air that enters your engine should pass over
(and activate) the air sensor plate. Is the only way to meter fuel.
Any air entering via injector seals, bad hoses, old O rings or
gaskets, etc will throw fuel/air mixture off. Is often much more than
minor inconvenience: impossible idle, poor acceleration, excessive
fuel consumption, dirty combustion (how many times do problems like
these crop up on list?). Can not stress enough importance of ensuring
entire upper half of engine is air tight. Good news: is easily within
capabilities of every owner to at least isolate a leak. Just don't
take any seals for granted on a 22 year old block...

I think the H4 bulbs have the same 3-way connector as the Delorean has
(for the low beam at least). As far as I know, H4 bulbs are not street

view of this boxed limo. For who is selling this, calling it a
Delorean, we owners need to see a more up close look at this thing

buying something that might no even resemble a Delorean "limo".

John Hervey might have them or dan make them up for you.
You can also just rewire the plugs that are on the car now...
All you need is a smaal screwdriver and a bit of patience once
you have the lights off the car...
It involves swapping over two wires per plug.
Using a small screwdriver you can remove the actual terminal from
the plug by pushing in on the tab that holds it in place.
Then bend the tab back into shape CAREFULY and insert the wires
so that you get (when looked upon from the "open" side) Black on
the left, Blue-Red on top and Blue-White on the left.
Did it on my car and it works like a charm.

Yes we still have plenty of issues left and since we are also the printer we
can make as many as we need. The second issue went into the mail Friday if
you had a subscription.
If you ordered just the first issue and not the 2nd thru 4th you still can.

I just got done checking my fuel pump circuit and ended up replacing
the fuel pump... I was stuck on the side of the road, so I had
checked both the inertia switch and the pump relay. both of which
eneded up being fine... as once I got home I found that I had power
at the pump.
But I get everything in the rat's nest behind my passenger seat, and
everything under the dash and at the pump put back together... but
now my Temperature guage is pegged straigtt down. Apparently my
coolant is -80 degrees... perhaps that's too cold :P
My thought is that's it's either come unplugged at the sender or at
some point in between. Looking at my miniscule wiring diagram it
looks likes it's gounnded right after the guage... am I reading that
right? Where is it grounded? And where is the sender? Is it the one
on the block on the passeger side near the hot water valve?
Any suggestions on where to check? what to do?

Subject: Headgasket job
Since my "critical engine failure", I've been forced to accept the
realities of my budget, and replace the head gaskets in place. I have
a few questions before I get started:
1. The workshop manual shows a special tool to hold up the timing
sprocket. Do I have to have this tool or is there another safer way?
2. My exhaust manifolds are not in great shape and I don't want to
damage them anymore. Can I just disconnect them from the muffler and
the "U" pipe and leave them attached to the heads?
3. I have been told that removing the manifolds is "easy" by some
folks on list. #5335 has been in a very damp environment for years
and the nuts and studs are fused together by rust. I don't even see
how I can get at them all without removing the engine even if they
weren't rusted. Is there something I don't know?
4. In short, can this job be done with the engine in place or should
I be removing it?

What about the idle speed regulator? Doesn't it add air that isn't

I realize that "Mechanic in a Bottle" doesn't exist. What I was looking for was
"Bribe in a Bottle" to pass the emissions testing! ;-p Of course I am admittedly
kicking my self twice over now. 1: I wasted money, and 2. The disclaimer for
the "Will allow your car to pass, or double your money back!*" *Only
guaranted on vehicles with properly funtioning emissions, and fuel systems.
Doh!
Anywho. I pulled the sparkplugs, and have discovered that plugs 1-3 show
normal characteristics, although 4&5 had much less carbon on them. This
could be due to the detergents and solvents that were run thru, I don't know.
And then we come to plug #6, which was dry fowled. Unlike the others plugs,
on this one the only place where carbon deposits had not covered anything
was on the tips of the electrodes where the spark was arcing. Although on a
side note, the ceramic insulater on the OUTSIDE of plug #5 is severly
yellowed on the bottom. This is the crooked plug as well, if that makes a
difference.
So now I know for certain that this is a problem with the fuel delivery system.
The gap ranges were varied on the plugs (between .27-.35), but this plug was
literally middle of the road @ .32, compared to the others, which were clean. I
still need to test the spray patterns & output volumes (need one more jar). But
based upon the CIS theory, I would assume that injector #6 is clogged, which
not just fowled the plug, but caused a rich condition in the remaining 5
cylinders due to the lack of it's own proper fuel displacement. So now I'd like
to clean the injectors. But as it turns out, my local official BOSCH service
center can't do, since their machine is broken. So I'm off to find someone who
can...

a Delorean and you pretty well take what you can get out there. Is
there any reason for this extreme modification to have a gas flap on

Hey list, long time no post. Just wanted to give any prospective new owners
a heads up on a DeLorean I found for sale in the Minneapolis area. Deatails
as follow....
1982 DeLorean, Vin #10690
18,000 miles
ASI Radio
Very clean inside and out
Leather in good condition
Frame is in very good condition
Appears to be 100% original, right down to the original Goodyears.
Here is what I found wrong with it....
Broken upper muffler mount ($35 part)
No wipers (probably still with original owner)
Engine cover latch broke as I opened it (the actual loop on the cover
itself)
The door headliners show signs of age, and in a small spot appear to have
been re-glued
Still has the blue fan-fail module (I didn't even know the factory put these
on the 82s)
Driver's door sags
The owner is asking $18,000 which I believe is a very fair price for a car
in this condition. I have not driven this car or even seen it run, but that
can be arranged if there is an interstate buyer interested in this car. It
is currently on consignment at a small used car lot in the Twin Cities. If
anyone has serious interests in this car, please email me at
ultra"at"isd.net . I'll give you the contact information for the dealer and
can arrange a further inspection and test drive if requested.
One more thing..... The dealer told me the owner has a stash of over $4000
in parts he bought with the car from the original MN dealer when the last
one was sold. Said he would include it with the purchase of the car for
$2000. I have yet to find out more infomation on this.
I'll be at the DeLorean Midatlantic Spring Social next weekend,
I'll be at the DeLorean Midwest Connection spring tech session in May,
and I'll be at Pigeon Forge in 2004!!!
