Paul, That's why I call it starter drag. Even though it was rebuilt recently
and 1 year in a starters life is recent. The center rotor get out of balance
for several reasons and either drags or hits the outer fields.

I had a similar problem with the starter, and spoke at
length about it with Warren at DMC (Texas). He said
that many of the internal parts in the starter are
non-existent, and anyone who says they rebuild them
are only disassembling and cleaning them up. ----<snip>


Rebuilding a starter mostly involves simply cleaning it out,replacing the brushes (I gurantee that the brushes that fit do exsist since almost all are similar) and replacing failed relays.It is fairly easy to order replacement relays and selenoids that work.If anything else has failed (like the field coils are burned) then it is junk anyway and cheaper and faster to get a new one.

I generated a document about a year ago concerning installation of a cruise
control.  I passed it to a couple of folks for comment but received no
feedback (not complaining because these people are busy too).  In any case I
have posted that document to the files section.

As stated in the file, it is base on input from many sources.  I have not
verified the web links still work nor could I guarantee it works, is safe,
is reliable, etc...  I can tell you it is based on a design that (I've been
told) has been installed in several vehicles and I still have high hopes of
giving it a try in the future (sorry other repairs had to come first).

I ask that those interested take a peak at this document and make comments
so a better product/reference would be made available for all.

The title (of course) is "D-Cruise.doc".  I saved it as an MS Word file so
the graphics would be include in one document (57k).

My car also has cruise... I believe it also came from JC Whitney. It's a Dakota system, and much like other systems, the controls mount perfectly where the clock is. I just took down the pictures of my installation in the Photos Section of the Yahoo Groups site a couple of weeks ago... guess I need to upload them again.

I have not seen an acceptable installation of a cruise control yet. I have a
brand new unit still in the box and haven't installed it yet because of the
way the throttle cable spool is set. The way the cruise control module pulls
the throttle spool makes the throttle cabel go slack and may fall off the
spool locking the throttle in wide open position. Unless you can find a way
to have the cruise control module pull directly on the throttle cable, like
from the passenger compartment, I would NOT suggest you install it.

I've got the same unit not yet installed. What did you use for pulse
generation? Am considering tying into Lamda sender on speedo cable. If
you did same, how many PPM's did you set it for (SW1 and SW2)?

Supplied cable on servo is way too long. Where did you install? Am
considering shortening cable to fit servo in engine compartment
(driver's pontoon).

My rheostat is DOA (not even part of modified headlight circuit) so
that's where I plan to install the dash control. Will route wires
through shaft hole, and keep the clock (it's at such a convenient
angle to view!).

The rebuild you describe is the type done by a majority of rebuilders,
they basically just disassemble, clean and replace brushes, reassemble
and paint. If you are really lucky they may even lubricate. This is
not what should be considered a rebuild. If you want to call it
anything you might call it a "freshen up". A proper rebuild would be a
complete tear-down, test the fields and armature, lightly clean-up the
commutator, balance, replace the bearings and brushes, set the end
play, replace the solenoid, reassemble and lubricate and then finally
bench test for speed, current draw, and balance. Of course if there
are any worn or damaged parts (like the bendix) they also replace. A
really good shop will bead-blast and paint too. You can get some idea
of how good the work is from the warrenty offered. If it is short then
you can guess how much confidence they have in their work.

I know of only one shop in Northern California where I can take my DeLorean, and they have been nothing but a pleasure to deal with. I had them inspect my car before I bought it and the "DeLorean Guy" at the shop spent 4 hours looking it over. I highly recommend them!

Conclusion and end



First off a correction on my behalf the starter was not totally rebuilt a
year ago, It only had a new solenoid.



The started has now ben fully reconditioned........



The guys in the car electrics place said when taken apart it looked as if it
had spent most of it's life "underwater"!!!! Full of rust and corrosion



Culd add to the theory that my car had some water issues, being that when I
started my restoratioin the frame was full of fust around the engine bay.



Thanks for evryones help and sugestions, I just need to pick up my starter
and put it back in the car.

factory cruise controls dont even pull the throttle cable, they pull the spool. good
luck on finding a unit that will do this.

the delorean doesnt have pulse generator on the spedo cable, or anywhere on the vehicle,
the lamda sensor is mechanical not electonical. you have to install magnets on one of
the drive shafts.

Pulse generation comes from the included CCS-203 magnet kit mounted on the left inboard cv joint housing.

I have PPM set to 2,000 (sw1 off, sw2 off )

Speed Signal with the magnet kit is VSS&Tach (sw3 on)

Servo is mounted on the left side engine compartmnet using one of the existing 6mm studs you'll find there.

Sensitivity is set to low (sw4 on, sw5 off), but I have EFI and custom intake. You'll know if you have to change it.

Control switch is norm open (sw6 off )
Tach select is "coil" (sw7 on)
