In the older DeLorean World mags, were many ads from time to time, for so
called "blackout" covers, both for front and rear. Some had three shades
of tint or clear. One claimed a tint that had 95% transmission of light so
that it was legal to leave on at night! Not sure if I believe that claim or
not! One even had a tiny DeLorean emblem in chrome on one corner....neato.
I think most fastened on with velcro so you could easily take them off at
night, if need be, and stash them in the trunk, like a T Top!! Personally I
liked the Blackout Look, Makes the D kind of "dark and mysterious". But
everyone to their own poison, I always say!!
I talked to a local glass company about MAKING me a cover and they said, no
problem and I could save money by making the pattern and giving it to
them....it would be of Lexan. They had done several for other brands of
cars and were really professionally done with polished edges. I did not
have it done though.

I think the terminology has been messed up. I think everyone means
uneaven firing order vs even firing order. Delorean is uneaven =
163524; even firing order = 142536. I think I got it right.

Look at the distributor cap on the PRV and you will see there are unequal distances between the plug wires. You will find 3 groups of 2. The engine does not fire at even 60 degree intervals as an even fire 6 would. This is reflected in everything else in the engine that is timing dependent, like the crank and the cams.

Engine manufacturers commonly design engines with two opposing cylinders
sharing one crankshaft journal. This is cheaper than making a crankshaft
with a separate journal for each cylinder and is entirely adequate for
everyday driving. When the cylinders are arranged in a 90 degree
configuration with 6 opposing cylinders like the DeLorean's, the
mathematics work out to one opposing cylinder creating more crankshaft
rotation than the other. One turns the crank 120 degrees and the other 60
degrees. Ignition and valve timing must be tuned to this configuration so
there is an odd firing sequence between opposing cylinders.
Adding 2 more cylinders to make a 90 degree V-8 makes the math work out even
firing with two cylinders sharing a common journal. Newer designed V-6's are
done with the cylinders opposed at 60 degrees which makes the math work out
even. It's my understanding the engine in the DeLorean was originally
designed as a V-8 which in a 90 degree configuration works out to even
firing. When 2 cylinders were lopped off it became odd firing.

Hi everyone....
Long time, no posting from me..been kinda busy.
Anyway...I was in VT last weekend doing some snowboarding, and was
staying at a bed and breakfast. There was a whole wall of books for
people to read to kill time and relax. I was commenting to someone
about "I bet all of these books suck...and I can't imagine finding one
that would be interesting to read"....
lo and behold..I was going to eat my words!
Just then in front of my, I spotted JZD's autobiography....signed no
less!

Personally I go to a European auto shop in the central valley, in Modesto, called Kruse Lucas. They have been working on Deloreans since the 80s and seem to know them pretty well. Terri Lucas, one of the co-owners, is their main Delorean guy and I have always been happy with his work. I've given them plenty of experience working on projects of mine for the last two years so they should be able to handle anything else you could throw at them. They do charge a little more for labor but I think the attention they give to the car is usually worth it.
I've heard of others in the Bay Area as well as farther north in Sacramento, but I will have to let others comment about those.

Thanks to Adam, David, Elvis, John, Martin, Nick, and Rick who responded
last month to my post about replacing the infamous blown caps.
I'm pleased to report that with help from those listed above and the
excellent write-up with pictures in the archives by Mark Hershey (thank
you Mark wherever you are!) the tranny in VIN# 6214 now shifts
perfectly.
After removal of the computer assembly and inspection of the 2 circuit
boards inside (each about 2 by 2.5 inches), I discovered that one of the
caps was in fact blown out like Mark's picture showed and the other was
starting to bulge out. Remember this car sat for years and has less than
10,000 miles. I located the replacement parts (most from an on-line
source like Digikey or Newark) and prepared to remove parts. I did not
totally unsolder the boards from the cable they are attached to, just
carefully spread them apart to be able to work on both sides. Removal of
the conformal coating to get a clean surface for soldering proved more
difficult than I expected. After trying every solvent I had, I obtained
the best results using a furniture stripper gel that dissolved the
coating very well. I used a copper mesh strip called Solder-Wick to
remove the solder from the areas of rework, which 'soaked up' the
existing solder when hot enough so the parts just fell out. I decided to
use the highest value cap suggested (50 volt tantalum) which was larger
than the old ones and would not allow the board to slide back into the
slot in the housing. These slots orient the boards parallel to the sides
of the housing, but due to the larger size of the 2 caps I put the first
board into the second one's slot with the other board not in a slot but
resting against the inner corner. This made the boards sit at an angle
but still held in place within the housing (anyone who has seen these
boards will understand what I mean). Sprayed new conformal coating on
the repairs, put that white conductive grease on the 2 replaced
transistors, put everything back together, drove the car to work this
morning and it shifted like a new car.
If anyone else is thinking of doing this, you should try. It is not at
all that difficult.

I had a similar problem with the starter, and spoke at
length about it with Warren at DMC (Texas). He said
that many of the internal parts in the starter are
non-existent, and anyone who says they rebuild them
are only disassembling and cleaning them up. I
confirmed this with a half-dozen or so other shops and
rebuilders around the country before bitig the bullet
and buying a new one. The Rhone starters are not prone
to failure, but after 20 years it's not surprising to
see some of them starting to do so.
