It seems to me that BOTH of these stories are true.
Indeed Thatcher did hate the whole DeLorean ordeal. Basically because
DeLorean had cost the British government millions in taxpayer's pounds, and
it is against the political nature of the British Conservative party to spend
Government money subsidising anything like the DeLorean. Millions of the
taxpayer's pounds.....all for a company that was being dying very fast.
As far as I know, Thatcher did NOT order the dies destroied, but sold to the
fishing company as mentioned in one of the previous postings. They were
indeed dumped into the ocean, I believe to act as "anchors" to hold down some
fishing nets or something....I could be wrong here, feel free to correct
me.....
The British tried to recover some of their loses by selling these dies to the
highest bidder, which was AFAIK the fishing enterprise.
.....so WHY doesnt someone go down there and get the dies? Well they would
not be of any use if you tried to use them for their original intensions
again. After 10 minutes in salt water, the dies basically have become useless.
What a shame. But hey, at least we still have the VARI dies for the inner
body of the car.
By the way, please correct me if I am completely wrong here. I dont want to
send out false information that will confuse everybody even more.

This question and answer came up on a site, which I was getting some information from. I thought that this would be a nice safety feature for our Deloreans, especially for those of us that drive them on a routine basis.
I am far from being an electrical guru, but I know that there has to be someone on the list that might just know how or can figure out how to make this work for our cars. Is anyone willing to take on this project and sharing the information on how to do it with the list members.

Q: I see some of the new vehicles from GM have super-bright parking / turn
signal lights instead of using the headlights as DRLs. Is there anything
I can do like this on the Impala?
A:
Those lights actually use 2057 bulbs, which are dimmer both on low and high
filaments than 2357s.
The difference is that on the '97 F-cars they wire the turn signals to work
as DRLs (not the parking lights), which means that the 32
candlepower bright filament stays on all the time. When you use the turn
signal, those applications switch the brighter filament OFF rather than ON.
In other words, if you installed the brighter 2357 bulbs in the F-cars, the
DRLs would be even brighter, since they would be using a 40 cp filament
instead of the 32 cp filament they use stock.
You could get the same effect on an Impala if you wire the turn signal/park
lamps so the brighter filament comes on with the parking lights. Also you
would have to rewire the relay so that it flashes the filament off rather
than on when the turn signal is used, just like in the F-cars. Then when you
turn on the park lamps, you'd have the bright DRL style amber lights lit up
just like on the '97 F-cars. That would also give you a "switch able" DRL,
that is by using the parking lights you could turn them on. You
could also wire it up to come on all the time the car is running.
This would be an excellent use for the top Caprice wagon switch added to the
LH side of the dash!
If you have to have DRLs, the use of the turn signals would be preferable
to the reduced power high beam headlights. They use less power, run up the
hours on cheaper bulbs are much less offensive to traffic in
front of you, plus they look better and more distinctive as well.

I just saw the pictures of the fascias, and I had envisioned the procedure
being done with the parts off the car. Are they that hard to remove? Or is
it just not worth the bother when overspray can be safely removed with
lacquer thinner and a Scotch-Brite pad?

I think the wires that you are refering to is the top dead center pick-up on
cylinder block. If you said that the the wires were towards the middle of
the tranny on the drivers side then it would be the reverse light switch.
The top dead center pick-up wire connects to the diagonstic plug. Just a
thought. Let me know what it is.

Tail light fixtures are readily available from any of the major DMC
vendors. Also check with the used-parts guys such as Bob Miller (he's
on the list somewhere and pops up occasionally, and always advertises

Took the roadtrip with the DCO and boy are you in for a treat. Mike and
Patty have done a professional type guide through Cleveland that is not only
functional but educational and at times humerous. Besides one other benefit
is they chose a real great mix of music to use in the background.
This trip is not what I expected. I expected a good trip but this is an
awesome trip that you won't want to miss. It is a bit challanging at times
but it takes you all over.
Make sure you stop at the NASA Research.
The place on the river is real cool also
i will have pictures of it on my web page in a few days I havae to get the
film developed.

Rob,
This sounds like a ver good idea, unfortunately, it would be a very
completed modification for the following reason. The front park/directional
lamps are duel filament; low wattage for the parking lights and high wattage
for the directionals. To turn the high wattage circuit on for driving light
applications would simply require additional wiring to each lamp, an
interior mounted switch, and a couple of diodes.
Her is the problem: To allow these lamps to double as driving lights you
would have to build a circuit that would allow the high wattage circuit to
return to normal
whenever the directional or hazard flashers were activated, this would
require some type of processor isolate the different circuits.

Hello,
I have mentioned once before that my tachometer was stuck at 5500 rpms.
now when I turn the key it goes up as far as it can go way up into the
redline area.(just started today) when I run the car it also goes up to the
redline area. when you give it gas it will move just a little (2-3mm) when
you remove the key it goes back to 5500 rpms. is this the tach? or something
else. where does it hook into the engine at? could the other end of the
system be the problem? the previous owner said it worked before it sat.
please let me know.
and if Sal (the one with a parts car)is on the list please email me. I would
like to order ALL of those parts we talked about from you.

crossover parts changed specifications. Clients would call me and say: "I
just purchased the crossover part you listed and it does not fit.."
Parts dealers like NAPA and AutoZone frequently change part numbers and
specifications without notice, usually on a yearly basis.
More than likely you will receive information from other list members on
crossover parts availability.
Let me close with the following: Many parts for your DeLorean are available
from local parts suppliers but be aware that there is know way of knowing if
the part will work properly in your DeLorean. Parts purchased from DeLorean
parts suppliers are either factory or exceed factory specifications. Most
important is that we all provide technical assistance after your purchase.
Lastly, purchasing parts from DeLorean businesses helps to support one of
the largest after market part networks of any limited production vehicle
anywhere in the world.

Dave,
You are absolutely correct about mechanics throwing away the TDC pick-up
when reinstalling a transmission, unfortunately they usually throw away the
flywheel protection plate that this wire is attached to. The protection
plate is there to prevent road debris from entering the bellhousing and
causing serious damage to the flywheel and clutch components.

Subject: Facia painting final chapter
I finished the facias on both cars and then worked the clearcoat a bit
because of all the waves in Richards facia. I used a hairdryer and
straightened it out a bit
Probably won't last past the first time he used the headlights but I did get
rid of the wave in the facia, I then wetsanded the very heavy coat of clear
I put on and it really came out nice. the pictures are being sent to the
vault along with the pictures of the facia I stripped down to the original
plastic. That facia came out best no surprise but Richards came out pretty
close both are very clean. Even MR bugs sag sanded out good so I am done
with this project and the pictures are there for you to look at.
The gloss level is high but loks good.
