Schlieckau, Jr." <dcsj@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Yet another TORSION BAR ? Help DMC Joe Hi Joe and fellow DML'rs I made a one tooth adjustment to my passenger door a few years ago, but at the time I didn't unload the bar in the process. My question is, how many degrees of rotation is typical from the Zero NO LOAD to a normal doors up position? Assuming a NEW strut is used and allowing for the typical variables of struts from different manufacturers. I'm just looking for the average degrees of rotation. Is it possible to permanently distort the torsion bar by over torquing it to compensate for a week lift strut. How much rotation is TOO MUCH? Another local owner had to have one of the driver side door hinges replaced last fall. He took it to a local body shop and provided the with the service shop manual. When he went to pickup the car the drivers door would no longer open up completely by itself, only about 30%. He told me that prior too the broken hinge it worked fine and that somehow The guy at the body shop bent the torsion bar. I had a chance to talk to the shop owner that did the work. He said that he was afraid of putting any more torque on the bar for fear of it braking. I have not had the chance to see his car yet. I'm only going by what he told me. He has had the car less than a year and is not that familiar with the unique workings of it. I plan to see him some time this month too look over a few things and assess the situation with the door and possibly make another attempt at adjusting it. Just to rule out the possibility of a bad strut I will switch it with one from my car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The price given me by my supplier was in error - the correct price is $90.58 and the kit includes 75 assorted rivnuts and mandrels in the following sizes: 3x0.5mm, 4x0.7mm, 5x0.8mm, and 6x1.0mm. They aren't THAT hard to find. I can provide a professional quality rivnut tool and the inserts, in 4, 5, 6, and 8mm sizes, for $139.00. I'm sure if you shop around you can find hobbyist quality ones for even less. Only three of them are left, this is #20. There are some differences from the production cars. You are right about the pull straps, these are the later door panels with the built in straps. There is a gas flap in the hood, possibly it does show up in the photo well." later mark Ian Stewart wrote: > I just got done conducting my semi-weekly sweep of eBay for an > affordable DeLorean and found this black-painted gem: > Very rare car, preproduction unit chassis #20. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 5 Date: Thu, 2 May 2002 22:18:11 -0400 From: "Jack Stiefel" <jackstiefel@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: RE: "Preproduction" car on ebay? I took a look at the pictures it had associated with and found these strange differences. First off I am sure we can all say it is not a pre-production, but it has been modified. Take the Plaque on the drivers side, it is not a normal one like the rest of our cars... It seems to be a one line plate (the picture is too small to make out any details). There are no lettering on the rear bumper. This may have been filled before painting. Notice the DeLorean plate in between the reverse lights. The center console has also been modified quite a bit with some strange looking things about the window switch area. There is a DeLorean plate mounted below the glove box lid, interesting. It also appears to be late 82-83 (I may be a bit off on this, but not pre-production) door straps. The coolant bottle has been replaced as well with another plastic one. The engine looks like it is missing some updates. I may have missed something, but the paint job looks amazing, real eye catching, but not a rare Pre-production, unless I missed something. Other things of note On the rear left rear bumper it doesn't say Delorean but there is a plate above the license plate that does There is some kind of spring arrangement for a striker on the rear louvre There are custom pads on the center console There are many custom things on this car but nothing to lead me to believe this is a "pre production" car. There is a high probability that the car was in an accident based on the customization and the fact that it is painted. Until a VIN is posted I would not accept this as anything but a late 81 customized, painted Delorean that appears to be clean and in decent shape. That odd container bottle is a coolant recovery bottle. Help DMC Joe The biggest problem with overtorquing the door struts to compensate for a weak strut is the overstressing of the area where the anchor bracket attaches at the tee roof. It will put more stress on that area of the car with the possibility of damage. The other big reason you do not want to overtorque is that if and when you do replace the strut the door will bounce against the upper stops again overstressing a weak area of the car and bending the pins that the stuts attach to. There is no set # of degrees to set the torsion bars. The best spec I can give you is that without a strut attached the torsion bar will hold a door open between 2 and 6 inches measured from the bottom of the door to the sill. I prefer to adjust on the weak side i.e. as long as the door will stay all the way up even if I have to help it open all the way a little. This keeps the stress as low as possible on the entire door and body system. The doors will always work better when warm so if you do this adjustment below 60 degrees the doors will be a lot springier at 80 degrees.
