Progress in this past week has been most heartening we have gone from
over $300 collected to over $500, a good percentage gain. We have now
accounted for almost one half of one percent of the list members but let
us not yet become complacent, more is needed.
The contribution suggested is $10 for the diagram, plus another $5 for
the emergency glove box booklet.

Try about $10K - not for just the supercharged motor, but for the entire
project - purchase and shipping of the car, mirror stainless engine
compartment, modified engine cover and louver, headers and custom S/S
mufflers, chassis restoration, interior repair (from extensive vandalism),
cross-drilled rotors, CD player, chromed stock wheels. But it took 5 years
of my labor, and it helped having 10,000 spare parts...
I only tell this because its just an example of what anyone can do if you
put your mind to it.

Neat idea and a very good looking setup, but last time I checked on this
manifold and carbs the cost was over $6000. I guess this kinda blows my
dollars per HP average clean out of the water, huh ?

I know it's over but maybe it could be done again since neither I nor
the other old guy knew it was going on or how to cast our votes. Maybe
some of the younger folks missed it to...it's possible! (Of course
compared to the MJ Fox contributors 67 is a pretty sprightly number).

I don't think it has to do so much with internet savvy as it does
awareness. As far as the polls go, I didn't even know that one was
opened. While I can't speak for others, myself, I don't check the
polls & files sections on a regular basis. The best way to get people
to cast thier votes would be to make an announcement whenever a new

Hank,
From my personal experience, I have run into pretty much the same
demographics that the poll suggests. Maybe it's just a mid east thing, but it
seems as if a lot of Deloreans are owned by a younger set. Could be the BTTF

Jim,
I'm not trying to hold you to any specific numbers, not at all. I admire
the time and effort you put into making the EFI setup work on the D engine
and appreciate your sharing this knowledge with everyone on the list. I'm
sure the benefits of this EFI setup go well beyond just the increase in
performance, no matter what the numbers are.
We always seem to discuss the average 15 to $20,000 cost of a driver type
Delorean on the list, and I just thought I'd do a little math and throw out
some performance numbers and costs to see what others on the list think. I
fully realize that the numbers I came up with don't really mean much because
of the wide array of performance variations and costs you can come up with,
but I thought it would make for some interesting discussions.
Jim, Please keep the excellent info coming. I think you're doing great !

Subject: State Farm Insurance answer
First of all I want to thank all of you that responded to my query on State Farm insuance after they decided to drop my car.
Brief summary. I am over 40, married, clean driving record, no kids, homeowner. Insured my house and 5 cars including the D with State Farm a couple of months ago after relocating to Florida from Illinois. After insuring the car for a month I got a notice saying they had made a mistake and it is on "their list" of uninsurable cars.
I gave my agent several of the responses from you and a copy of the DNC and PJ Grady web site. He contacted their home office with the information to no avail.
The OFFICIAL POLICY from the home office is that they willl no longer take any new owners. I tried GEICO today with the similar response. No collision coverage.
If there is any threat to the popuality and appreciation of our cars this is it.
The movers and shakers of the clubs and the major supply repair houses need to nip this in the bud. Somehow there has been a recent decision by an uninformed individual/group that our cars are too much of a risk.
At one time I know that the DOA offerd insuance. As a member I would like to see them relook at this as a service to the membership ( which I am one).
The least that they can do is to contact the insurers underwriters who set the protocols and discuss our cars and the avilability of parts and their very safe record and try to get us off the black list.
I do not want to start a discussion on who has what insuance again, however I think everyone can anticipate an impact eventually from this decision as it was from what I understand is an underwriters handbook that is used by most companies.
PS - I will be cancelling all my policies with State Farm as soon as I can!!!!!

<SNIP>
I would say that shrinkage may just be the cause here. When my speedo
stopped working, I first checked the dust shield. Turns out that the
only thing keeping it on was the input shaft for the angle drive. The
hole was still square. The problem appeared that the hub wasn't
making proper contact with the shield to turn the angle drive. The
new cap snapped right on, and no problems since.
But, here's the kicker to the story. My car appears to have been
parked @ the side of a house for a few years. The drivers side lense
on the rear is a bit more faded than the opposite side. And
accordingly, there was some rust present on the passengerside hubs.
After I installed the new dust cap, I decided to install the old one
on the passenger side hub. A bit more rusty, but the cap just kept
falling off. So the bit of rust on the inside did nothing to increase
grip. I would imagine that the plastic has simply begun to shrink
over time.
Just my ¢2 to throw in.

WOW!!!! Thanks John!
As i turns out, I took John's Advice below, and checked the intertia switch.
I started my car, let it run, and everything was fine. I tugged and pulled
on the wires for the inertia switch, and it still ran just fine. I then
tapped/knocked on the housing for the switch's box, and the car stalled! I
tryed to start it again, and no go. If i pulled the switch up and down, and
banged on the box a few times, the car would start again.....i let it run,
knocked on the switch, and BOOM....car died!
I called PJ Grady for some insight. Louie and Pat told me to check to see
if the switch had been replaced (there was a recall on them a while back)
and it had been. BUT...the housing for the switch was electrical taped
together! Someone must have opened it before for some kind of problem in
the past, and now it was acting up!
I replaced the switch last night, and after some quick tests, it seems to
run fine! I am taking the car out today for a drive to make sure all is
well....
THanks to Johny, Louie, and PAT!!!!!!
and....THANK GOD FOR THE DML!!!! Saved me $$$ (i normally would have
depended on a mechanic to find this problem!)

Kevin, Several things could be going on. Gas feed, loss of fuel pump
connections for a second. Look and see if the connector coming off the
inertia switch shows and signs of melting. If you may have hit the connector
with your foot and pulled it loose just enough to barely make contact. Press
it in good after you take it out and reinstall it. Also, check the wires on
the ignition coil and the white resistor against the fire wall. When was the
last time the accumulator was replaced. You can see the connector on the web

Wow!
Based on the information provided to me, you can do it yourself for MUCH
less than $6k...try $2,000 to $2,500 if you don't cut any corners.
The secret is to buy the parts in Canada, UK or Germany. The cars and
parts are very inexpensive there. You just need to establish contact with the
Renault Alpine Owners Association.
I can put you in contact with a German Renault Alpine Club member & parts
supplier. (When I was in Germany, the Alpine members were laughing at the
DeLoreans performance when it has the same PRV as their Alpine's.)
It can be done and the car has more HP than the CIS method. You have some
minor mod's to make with the DeLorean fuel supply, however it is bolt on-bolt
off method and can be restored to original configuration.

The plug mentioned as the dummy plug for the non-used speedo drive is
on the side of the transmission - I think on the passenger side of
the car. He mentioned his problem as being a "cap" on the end of the
trans, I'm assuming on the end of the trans that faces the front of
the car (in the DMC).
I've heard of one of the 5-th gear retaining nuts backing off (they
are normally staked in place, i.e. the center of the nut is dimpled
against the flat on the mainshaft to keep it from unscrewing) and
drilling thru the rear housing. The hole is supposedly so clean that
it looks like it belongs there. My guess is that happenend and has
been repaired.

Subject: Re: fuel injector / HP Gains
Just to let you know, there is also a setup from the Alpine which is
6 single carbs! I was unaware of the cost for the 3 carbs, so that is
new info.
I believe it was said in the back issues some time ago that the CIS
system used on the DeLorean is capable of feeding a 250hp engine. But
with carbs, CIS, or EFI, one thing remains: The exhaust will have to
be modified. Don't get me wrong, the stock exhaust creates a nice
tone, and is well suited to the car. Or I should say rather for the
car designed for economy. But because of it's restrictions, it will
have to go. No matter what you do, higher compression, port & polish,
high flow intake, increased fuel delievery by means of whatever fuel
delivery system, one thing remains: You will have to remove the
restrictive exhaust & emissions control system.
Case in point. On pages 121 & 124 of the 1977-1995 edition of the
DeLorean GOld Portfolio, the artice states that the european version
of the DeLorean PRV is able to put out 156hp. This is w/o the
emmisions system. As a side note, it also states that fuel economy is
shot. Unfortunatly, there is no picture available of the exhaust
system on this engine. But if I had to guess, I would imagine the
catalytic converter has been removed, along with the LAMBDA probe,
ECU, and the frequency valve. On the DOC's webpage about the freeflow
exhaust, minus the muffler, this exhaust in completly redesigned.
Here the output from he engine is 167hp. In both cases, the amount of
fuel fed to the engine is increased. BUT ONLY BECAUSE THE EXAHAUST
SYSTEM CAN QUICKLY DISPOSE OF ALL WASTE FROM THE ENGINE!
Bottom line: With the stock exhaust system on the DeLorean, the only
adantages that I can see with the proposed EFI system would be for
fuel economy & cleaner emissions. If you want better performance,
start at the tailpipe, and make your way back. Granted if your engine
is out tune, an EFI system can make the best of things to give the
best performance/economy possible. But even then, the engine isn't
running up to par, so it will be technicly running worse than factory
specs.

It is not unusual to see the bigger "mainstream" insurers not looking
to place coverage on older cars. This is a specialty area that they
don't like. You must try the companies that actively seek to place
this type of insurance like Grundy, Taylor, and Haggerty among others.
There is no developing problem of getting insurance for your older
classic car, it is just that your broker and the homeowner's insurance
that you commonly would go to first aren't comfortable with it. Get a
Hemmings Motor News and you will see that there are many companies
that will fight for your business!

even ask why). Well, it came apart on its own a little faster than I
could note how it went back together. I got it pretty much back
together no problem, with one exception. There is a torsion spring
that sits inside of there which I am assuming is used for the
momentary/delay activation (judging by the way its switched inside).
However, I cannot figure out how it goes on. Every time I think I got
it, it interferes with the arm operation. I've reassembled my defrost
switch, so I'm not incompetent. I just need to be pointed in the
right direction.
now, other question. I am rather dissapointed by the speed of my
wiper arms. The high speed setting seems to be about the same speed
as the low setting on my Talon. Are the speed resistors inside of the
wiper motor? Can they be changed? Could a different (faster) wiper
motor be mated with the DeLorean's assembly? Since I do drive my car
rather often in the summer and am not intimidated by rain, I would
just like a little more aestheticly pleasing wipers by "beefing up"
thier speed. Any ideas are appreciated.

Subject: More New Owner Questions
As a new owner, the biggest problem I have is understanding how
various parts of the car are supposed to work (this is a problem
because most of the systems on my car do not operate correctly -- if
I haven't fixed it, it doesn't work!). For instance, it was weeks
before I understood how the dome lights were supposed to work. I have
never seen dome lights that work in such a fashion. Anyway, I
currently have 2 questions along these lines that maybe someone can
answer before I start tearing up panels and tracing wires and figuring
it out on my own.
1) Rear defrost -- My dash bulb was burnt out, no big deal. Now that
I have replaced the buld, pressing the switch forward turns the bulb
on but the bulb turns right back off when I release the button. This
*may* be proper operation since the car isn't cold. However, the rear
defrost may also work on a timer, in which case the system would not
be operating correctly. Can someone tell me how the rear defrost is
supposed to work?
2) I have the rear mounted power antenna. And of course, I haven't
fixed it yet, so it doesn't work. From what I read, there should be a
relay for the power antenna behind the seat of the car? But this is
not really the information I am looking for. My power antenna has 2
wires running to it (not including the actual antenna connection).
Furthermore, the bracket it is mounted to is a good ground (whether
or not this ground is used I don't know). The two wires running to it
are red and green. Both of these wires have 12V power at all times.
This can't possibly be correct. Before I start dismantling the power
antenna, does anyone know what these wires are supposed to do?
Thanks,
Scott

Subject: Ground Effects Kits and Aftermarket Spoilers
Does anyone out there remember where to get the really low aftermarket side-skirt and front spoiler ground effects kits? I have checked the archives, but have not found a supplier. If anyone has a kit in any condition that they would be willing to part with, please contact me privately at :Rustproof@xxxxxxxxxxx Thanks.
