The problem may be that you are expecting a little more out of this
car than it was designed to deliver.

It sounds like you are revving it up and "dropping" the clutch. In
most high performance cars the tires would spin. In the DeLorean, you
are simply burning up your clutch, since that is where the slipping
occurs (rather than between tires and pavement). With the heavy rear
wieght bias and large tires, and relatively high axle ratio, it is
difficult if not impossible to spin the tires on a stock DeLorean on
dry pavement.  If you keep testing this you will soon get to see and
experience what a failed clutch looks and drives like.

If I am misunderstanding you, my other guess would be that your
clutch is already on its way out.

To see the pics of the air box go to this link and go to techie stuff and then to Cam's airbox! :) Just remember that this is the testing prototype and the ones you all would get will be a whole lot cleaner and shinier, but the basic design is there. They are going to cost in the area of 230-270$  for the custom airbox, all the hardware, and a breather filter. The airbox is definatly worth every penny and in conjunction with a K&N panel air filter (it does however work perfectly fine with a stock filter)allow your car to breath imensly better making it more willing to rev and in turn, faster!(and no, it does NOT get hot and heat up the airflow) So here is my prototype folks I hope you like it. If you have anyquestions, just e-me.

Mr. Tinnerstet:

Your unit was shown to me at PJ Grady last week, when I had my engine mounts
replaced and the tranny mounts welded.

Rob had the assembly unit.  We were discussing the difference between your
motor assembly unit versus his electric solenoid unit.  Your unit was taken
apart to expose the electric motor and the plastic gears in its arragement.

Mr. Tinnerstet, I had contemplating in purchasing your units about a year
ago, since Rob's units were not available for sale.  I emailed you and you
were kind enough to have sent me the schematic as to the installation.  I
decided not to purchase the door openers, due the reasons that I don't have
the facility nor the time to install ANY kits, either yours or Rob. You see,
I park my DeLorean in a large city commercial parking complex and they don't
allow work to be performed on any vehicles.  For me to take to a service
station to get them installed? ... forget about it.

Your kit is cheaper in price and it would be unfair for me to purchase your
units and have Rob install them, besides, he is too busy.  If you were near
me, I would purchase your unit and have you install them.  Since you are in
Washington and I am in New York -- it is a mission impossible.

So, if and when Rob will have his door openers units for sale in the future,
and if I am still interested, I will purchase them and have him install them
to save time and labor.

I believe that JZD did own a dealership in Clearwater, Florida but not
Cleveland, Ohio.  I might be wrong, but I think that Charles DeLorean (JZD's

Either way, DeLorean Cadillac is currently run by Mark DeLorean, who is

Subject: Fw: my attitude about DeLorean (long)

 Andy / List,

There are lots of books, myths, rumour and legends about the whole DeLorean
 story.
I am sure all of them have "truth" in there some where, they are often
contriductory and always give a different "spin" on events. If all the
books
were the same then the later one's would not sell!

I sometimes get a bit upset when some "youngster" picks up a book or an
magazine article and then relates this "sudden insight" to every one
around.
Such as it was "all a British government conspiracy", etc. My advice is read
ALL the books on the subject, think about what you would have done in these
difficult situations and gradually form a balanced view of historical
 events.

My personal view is that JZD was a man with great insight and talent, he
eventually produced a car that was different from all the rest. He should
be
proud of that. I am very proud to own a piece of this history. I don't
think
he was a saint, I don't think he was blameless.  I don't think he was or
is,
any worse than most of our "Leaders" in politics or industry.  If we could
re-run our lives again, I am sure we would all change a few
 things..hind-site is a wonderful thing!
Live the dream...drive and enjoy the car!

If I were lucky enough to meet JZD in the street, It would be one of the
 best days on my life!

With a description of these symptoms the first area to check (assuming
you have good gas in the tank) is the fuel enrichment system. See if
the frequency valve is buzzing. It is located on the right valve cover
and should sound like an angry hornet (if it is working you can't help
but notice it). If it is working then it gets more complicated. Is the
air filter blocked? Has the fuel filter ever been changed? Maybe you
need a tune-up and replace all of the spark plugs and wires.

Darryl, Here, here, As you know I to have been bashed for products that I
have come out with and the critics just criticize. What have they brought to
the table in products or positive feed back or helpful ideas you can do to
make the product better? Several people on the list have mentioned to me
about a tweak in the product to make it a little better, to them I thank you.
As I have said in earlier post some people have nothing better to do that to
post negative comments or speculation on how they work. To my knowledge, none
of the people who criticize my work have bought a thing but I'll bet you they

Subject: Some Speedo troubles

Last week my lower speedo cable broke. I researched my symptoms through the archives and was pretty sure it was the lower speedo cable (which it was) and ordered one from Houston. My research also brought up a message of someone stating that the cable guide sometimes broke or rusted easily and this would put strain on the cable causing it to break. So I ordered one of those guides, too.

The new cable is about a foot shorter than the broken one. My broken cable snaked through the cabin wall and was zip tied close to the frame. This was quite a lot of bends and probably helped contribute to the breakage. Maybe. That's beside the point.

My original cable guide was the simple kind that had a plastic swivel latch instead of the long wire arm. It was working, though I'm not sure it would be enough since this new cable isn't tied off anywhere else. So it's probably good that I replaced it.

While I had the cable off I shot some lithium aerosol grease into the angle drive. I read that you are suppossed to turn the angle drive and remove the bottom screw and lube it through the screw hole, but I couldn't figure out how to turn it, and was afraid to put a pipe wrench on it. #Q1: Info anyone?

So... the new guide is installed, the new cable is installed and it worked great for the rest of the week until this morning. After gassing up I went down a steep drive to the road, and by the time I got passed the next light my speedo is making an awful racket. The needle is moving quite smooth, there isn't a lot of jumping around even from 5-30, which is an improvement over the last cable. But this racket has me a little scared.

I pulled over and check the angle of the cable from the angle drive, it looks good. I gave the arm a little more of a bend to help some, but I'm not sure what it is. The noise really sounds like it's coming from the lambda counter box ( #Q2: that the box in the footwell, right?), but that could just be the place where the sound most echoes.

#Q3: Suggestions anyone?
#Q4: Can some one post some pictures of a good speedo cable routing job?

Robert,

That was a great synopsis about DMC.

Can you tell us where you got your information about the design of the front
crumple tube originally being too strong?

Also, I'm not aware that the trailing arm bolts were ever recalled.  I'm
curious to know if you have any information on this.  I understand that the
problem was that the bolts were good, but they were not torqued properly at
the factory.  If you know of any documentation that discusses the quality of
the bolt itself, I'm curious to hear about it.  So far I have removed
trailing arm bolts from two DeLoreans, and both of them had bent trailing
arm bolts on the passenger side.  Coincidence?

And I got a good laugh about what you said:

Subject: New Owner Questions

I just recently purchased my first DeLorean, #6683.  I have done
plenty of automotive work in the past, but I still have alot to learn
about DeLoreans.  As a new owner, I have a few hopefully simple
questions to ask:

1)  How do you remove the dome light?
2)  What is the best way to find out information on the Zilla products
I keep reading about?
3)  What should my oil pressure read?  Right now mine is reading just
over 80, which I am betting is not normal.
4)  In order to open the lower engine cover, you have to pull and hold
the release lever in the car while someone else (or though creative
use of a long stick) lifts the cover.  If you just pull and release
the lever, the cover relatches.  Is this a stock irritation, or is it
not working correctly?
5)  How is the dash illumination supposed to work?  Here is what mine
does:  With the ignition on, the temp and fan controls are always
illuminated.  When I turn on the parking lights, the temp and fan
controls dim, and the headlight and hazard light buttons illuminate,
as does the instrument cluster.  Only the instrument cluster lighting
is affected by the illumination brightness knob.  Is some of this not
working correctly?  How should it work?
6)  My car runs well enought, but it has an acceleration hesitation
that is severe when the engine is cold, and mild when the engine is
warm.  By hesitation, I mean opening the throttle tends to choke and
kill the engine, rather than accelerating it.  Perhaps it just needs
some adjustment or a tune-up?  Do DeLorean owners, either with or
without help from various DeLorean service centers, ever get together
and have tune-up parties?

Thanks for your help!

Sorry for the confusion..

I got a large number of e-mails asking about buying the pullstraps.
Sorry I did not say, but the pullstraps are not for sale.  Last I
checked these things are only $30, although someone else said they may
no longer be available... is this true?

I'd like to get a answer on why there are 2 different styles of pull
strap.  Maybe no one knows?  I will take a picture of them when I have
some time.

There were also a bunch of people asking about the stripes, so I will be
putting them on EBAY sometime soon.   I had no idea there was such a
demand for them.

Meanwhile, I'd really like to get rid of the door.. but no one asked
about that!  :)

Casey,

You made the thing out of metal!  Gasp!  Just after we were told on this
list that metal conducts heat too much and doesn't make a good air box.  But
then I have seen many cars with metal air boxes, and your design really
doesn't use that much metal.

We have heard on this list before that DMC Houston is coming up with Stage
1, 2, 3, etc engine upgrades and that some of this includes a better air
intake and exhaust system.  Can you or anyone else venture to say what kind
of air intake DMC Houston is cooking up?

Where did you learn to weld stainless steel like that?  It looks like a
great job.  Do you think there could be any additional improvement by lining
parts of the stainless with a thin layer of foam insulation (which probably
wouldn't look too good).  Or maybe you could make the whole thing out of
Lexan?  I have seen people do creative things with shaping Lexan using a
heat gun.

When you are in production, I think I want one.  :)

Subject: Re: a/c pulley bearings bad design

Thanks to David Teitelbaum & John Hervey for clearing this up.  The bearing
that went bad was one that came from PJ Grady via DMC Joe.  It has a black
seal and says it is made in China.  Also it has the word PEER and the model
number 6202RS.  So it sounds like I have what you are warning not to use.

I can say that over-tightening my belt was certainly not the problem.
Whenever the belt got a little wet or when cold the belt would slip a little
on hard acceleration.  I could also reach in there and easily turn the
pulleys by hand.

When at the last SEDOC meet, I saw on the PJ Grady table a new set of
pulleys made of gold anodized aluminum which match the color of the pulley
on the PJ Grady water pump.  Can anyone say if there is an advantage to
using an aluminum pulley?  Like maybe better heat dispersion?

I still intend to come up with a better heat shield design.  I'm thinking
about using two sheets of stainless steel or aluminum separated by a small
air space.  The rear-most sheet would come down a little lower and curve
forward at the bottom to make an air scoop.

I'm also thinking about coming up with a rear fascia extension that would
bolt to where the bottom of the fascia bolts and then curve forward to the
bottom of the frame.  The idea is to make a cosmetic improvement.  Whenever
riding behind a DeLorean, I see too much of the frame, oil pan & exhaust
system.  I realize that anything like this could restrict air movement too
much, but I'm thinking about making something out of mesh or perforated (or
slotted) stainless steel.  Clips could bolt it to the tow hooks on the frame
and make the modification completely reversible.  Comments anyone?

On another subject anyone participating in the Fall Tour should

I guess the fact that undertaking is legal in the US may have some bearing on

Robert and other list members,

thanks a lot for your input!  i was unaware that Haddad had admitted to
falsifying the gold faucet documents!!! that really changes my perspectives
AGAIN!!!!  such a twisted story DeLorean's is.  but that's what makes the car
so incredibly unique, right?  I LOVE THIS CAR!

keep up the good conversation,
Andy

Subject: Mid-State DeLorean Club Web Site is down

The Mid-State DeLorean Club web site ( http://www.midstatedmc.com/ )
will be down for another two weeks. It has been down for a few days
due to the server being physically moved from Illinois to Utah. I had
hoped to have it up and running today, but we're having problems with
the ISP we had planned to use out here. I was supposed to have a
connection and IP addresses waiting for me when we arrived, but
nothing is working. So we've dumped that ISP and we've just worked
out an arrangement with Qwest for a DSL hookup, but they have given
us an installation date two weeks from now.

Please be patient! The web site will return as soon as we have a
connection.

My personal domain: buffalochips.org is also down for the same length
of time. If anyone needs to reach me in the next two weeks please use
my Yahoo mail address:  mnoeltne(at)yahoo.com

Thanks!

Casey, The air box looks great. Is there any way to make the top stainless or
in your estimation does it looks better with the Lexan. I would want to put
the Delorean sticker on top also. Have you been forming metal a long time. It
looks good. Let me be the first to order one.

I was wondering what are some of the "larger" size
rim/tire combinations people have successfully used on
their DeLoreans?

The air box looks great! One question/concern...you have a filter on
the breather tube on the oil fill cap...the main reason why there
was a hose going from there to the original airbox was for it to
burn off any excess "fumes" for pollution control. Does it hamper
the emissions since you don't have that hose going from the oil
filler cap to the air box anymore?

Subject: Heated Mirrors

Hello all,

with all of this talk about dooropeners and using the wires for the intended
heated mirrors I was wondering if they actually are fully connected up; if
they do get power when you turn on the ignition...

I want to knwo this, since I'm thinking of actually making my mirrors
heated, using a kit from a local mailorder.
The wires are there, I saw them when I was inside the doors a couple of
moths ago, but never thought of actually measuring them out...

If anyone can confirm if they are fully wired I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

JAN van de Wouw
