Excuse my type-o. I meant to say only the front was raised not lowered to
meet the US specs on my post below.

I also see this trend developing recently as well unfortunately. ?There are
many fine vendors and parts suppliers out there that are extremely courteous
to DeLorean Owners. ?They provide excellent service and make excellent
products. ?However they do not always have the time to read and reply to the
DML. ?They are more than happy to take the time on the phone and help you in
any way possible. ?DMC Joe, Don Steger, and Rob Grady, ?to name a few. ?Every
one has different opinions on what is best for their car. ?I have the front
springs replaced on my car with ones from PJ Grady. ?They are anything but
"cheapie" ?They are excellent in quality and make for an improved ride and
even out the spacing in the wheel wells. ?The rear stock springs are fine and
are designed to support the weight of the engine. ?Only the front was lowered
originally to meet specs for the US market. ?As I said to each is own when it
comes to your DeLorean. ?I don't know any DeLorean Vendor who sells inferior
products and have never seen it mentioned here on the DML or inferred to
until recently.

I do think on this thread that the comment someone made about the Charles
Muffley Award seems to really fit here.
I do believe Curtis's Car fit the coolest car catagory and it exemplified
what Charles stood for.  The award is very fitting.  I missed Charles in
Cleveland.  In the short time I got to know him and his wife I really enjoyed
their company and he wil be missed.

My question is to Walter
Have you seen Curtis Car and were you at the show when we awarded the Charles
Mufley Award.  If so any comments.

We also are looking to break the Modified catagories down a bit to be more
specific to the kind of modifications made. So wish us luck. And a lot of
cars.
As Mike and I have said its sometimes easier said than done and at this point
the Concourse is going in the right direction.  I will be trying harder in
Memphis to clarify the Daily Driver class.

One thing I can say, we had a whole lot of awards
I especially enjoyed the fun awards.  That was last minute and it went off
real well.
For those of you there you helped pick the winners.

The way the door is designed, it is supposed to act as a lever, lifting
the car up around a foot and a half or something along those lines. (the
section of the door that is part of the roof, and the area above the
window are the parts used for the leverage) Although i have never heard
of this actually being used. The point of this is a person could get out
of the car. Of course, if someone was really stuck the could kick out the
side windows and go out that way. (again, a feature built into the car so
crash victims could get out.)

Hello Group,

I was poking around in the driver's foot well area, and noticed
that my inertia switch does not have any of the 'white marks' that
would indicate that it is a recall replacement switch. Should I be
concerned? It has also NOT been moved over to the left side near the
luggage compartment release.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any do's and dont's when it
comes to resetting the lambda counter.

Thanks a bunch,

Same way you would escape a Lamborghini...kick out the front

your car, not only for any fires but you can use the bottom of it to
smash out the front windshield.

I've been wondering this myself, so I looked for some crash test info, but
only found 2 videos on Tamir's web site. Which is only a head on at 36
miles, and 15 I think. I've read about rear-ends on the dml where there hit,
and it doesn't leave much of a mark, etc. And the ocational fender bender,
but nothing much more than that, at least to my memory. Things like
side-front end crashes, and roll-overs would be good to know too.

The video on my site is actually of a production DeLorean being tested with
airbags.  You can see from the two videos that the design of the production
DeLorean interior does not work well with air-bags, the driver was nearly
decapitated by the air-bag (Neck was snapped for sure).  The videos also
make me feel very uneasy with the concept of crashing in a DeLorean.  Check
them out, they are in the D's ON TV section under MISCELLANEOUS video.

...provided that the extinguisher doesn't get loose during the accident,
conk you in the noggin' and knock you out cold :)

Rehashing something from the mailing list archives, wasn't there
some article in Popular Science/Mechanics about the doors working as
levers, and an average size man being able to push the door open and
lever the car up just enough to escape?  Nobody confirmed the
validity of this last time it was discussed.

Who wants to volunteer their car for a test :)

Subject: a/c blower performace observations (long)

If your a/c vents aren't putting out the amount of air you think they should
be, then I might have the solution to your problem.

If your OEM blower motor assembly (motor AND squirrel cage fan) has been
replaced with one that spins in the wrong direction, then this configuration
cannot be made to blow the proper amount of air from your a/c vents even
with the polarity reversed.  You may get a moderate amount of air output,
but not the full amount.  Here's why:

In addition to there being two types of blower motors (one type turns
clock-wise, the other turns counter clock-wise) there are also two types of
squirrel cage fans that attach to these motors (one is made to turn CW and
the other made to turn CCW).

To make a very long story short, make sure that your blower motor is
spinning CCW and that you have attached to it a squirrel cage fan that is
also designed to turn in the CCW direction.

If you want the very long story, then keep reading:

To make sure we are all on the same page, I'll list some definitions so that
you
will know what I'm talking about.

When I say clock-wise (CW) or counter clock-wise (CCW), I am talking about
looking into the open end of the squirrel cage fan.  As applied to the fan
motor, I'm talking about looking at the end of the motor where the squirrel
cage fan attaches.

If you look closely inside the squirrel cage next to the center nut, there
is a direction arrow.  On Deloreans, this arrow should point CCW and the
motor should spin CCW.

If these conditions are not met, then here are some possible explanations:

1) Your OEM motor was replaced with one that spins in the wrong direction
and you still have your OEM squirrel cage.  There are two outcomes:
    a) with negative ground, the assembly will circulate a moderate amount
of air in the CW direction and no useable amount of air will come through
the vents.
    b) with the polarity reversed, the assembly will circulate a lot of air
in the CCW direction and a lot of air will come through your vents.  All
should be well with the world, but your blower motor will have a positive
ground which isn't really safe.

2) Both your OEM motor AND your OEM squirrel cage were replaced with an
assembly that spins in the wrong direction.  Now you are screwed!  There are
two outcomes:
    a) with negative ground, the assembly will move a lot of air in the CW
(the wrong) direction and almost no air will come through your vents.
    b) with reversed polarity, the assembly will circulate a moderate amount
of air in the CCW direction and a moderate amount of air will circulate
through the vents, but not near as much as it should.  From what I have read
in some of the DML back issues, it is very possible that some of you have
this situation and don't know it.

If you look inside your squirrel cage fan and cannot see a direction arrow,
then hold one hand on the outside of the squirrel cage and turn the cage
with the other hand.  When turning in a CCW direction, the blades should cut
into your hand.  When turning in a CW direction, the blades should wipe past
your hand.  If you get the opposite, then you have the wrong configuration
for a Delorean.

If this information is repeated elsewhere in the DML, then I apologize for
posting it again.  I tried searching the back issues, but couldn't find
anything about it, so I had to figure all this stuff out for myself the hard
way.

I'm pretty new to the Delorean scene (as of Feb '00) and have only been to a
show in Georgia and a few local things.  I plan on going to some of the big
shows in the future.  It probably will be next year before I can get the
time.

My idea of starting this thread was somewhat motivated by sarcasm since it
seems that so many people want to have their daily drivers judged in the
concours.  But on a more serious note, I really would like to see some sort
of contest that would motivate people to put their daily drivers in
appropriate shows leaving the trailer queens to the concours.

Have a contest that rewards for improvements and penalizes for broken items.
That is probably what the Charles Muffley Award and the People's Choice is
already about.  If not, then I would like to see a daily driver contest that
is just that.  The car has to be driven to the event and a certain amount of
road grime and dust from the trip is expected and allowed.  If the car looks
like it is never driven, then it probably isn't and could be disqualified.
We would make a list of categories that would have a minimum/maximum point
award/deduction for various attributes about the car.  For example
concerning the radio, I propose the following score:
-2 =  a hole in the dash
-1 = an original Craig/ASI radio that is broken
 0 = a working OEM setup
+1 = a reasonably cheap aftermarket replacement
+2 = a very high quality stereo system.

I suggest deductions or low scores for things that seem gaudy, unnecessary
or excessive.  For example, a bad stereo installation having speakers
mounted in distracting locations, a cut steering wheel, flux capacitor,
flames painted on the fenders, etc.  This would help stop the contest from
favoring whoever spent the most money on needless things.

I suggest extra points for upgraded items that show ingenuity and quality of
workmanship.  A missing rear view mirror would get a low score vs. a well
installed electro-chromatic mirror that would get a high score.  Of course
an OEM mirror in good condition would get a score of zero -- neither good
nor bad.

I realize that this sort of contest would be very hard to judge fairly and
consistently from show to show and from car to car.  But I think the best
way to handle it is to make up some of the rules as you go along and base
future judgings on past precedents, just like the legal system (Roe vs. Wade
for example.)  I know this could start a lot of red tape, but then look at
the Concours D'Elegance.

In summary, may the best upgraded, functional, useable, practical Delorean
win the contest!

I would like to know how it would be possible to try to kick out the
windshield being strapped in by the seatbelt(you do wear your seat
belt Right??)and upside down in a limited room area such as the
Delorean has,,plus has anybody seen what holds the windshield
in,Thick black guey stuff, the most that would happen is that you
would put your foot(leg) thru the windshield, and get it lacerated
making it harder for rescue crews, the best bet is the side
windows, that brings up another question,WHAT if the Delorean is
submerged underwater, how do you get out, will the door spring open
under water?Best bet is if you worry about such things and you want a
Gullwing car then the best bet is to drive a Bricklin,it has full
opening manual windows(a SAFETY Feature) ,A hatchback door with the
release right next to the divers seat, that you can pop open and crawl
out,and Hydroliac doors, that might even open the doors upside down
(acting like a pump jack).

Well with any car you should have a "life hammer" in there with you.
Typically these are carbon tip hammers milled to a fine point and
designed to smash away windows. They used to be $35 or more but I got
one from K-Mart for $10 this X-mas. It also has a resessed pin for
puncturing air bags, resessed blade for cutting seat belts, built in
flash light, and glow in the dark handle to find in pitch black.

THERE is no reason not to have one in every car.

1) Use life hammer on front window.
2) Use life hammer on side window(s).
3) Lean back and kick out front window. This works with the hammer.

With the 20th of the DMC and the auto show happening right now why
not have a big showing for the 25th.

I would think we could get enough donations from DMC NY, LA, TX,
other dealers and owners to get a space off the main floor. We would
have no problem getting owners to bring their cars to the, this I'm
sure.

The press would be all over it if we could get a dozen or more cars
and maybe some factory reps. It'd be all other the TV and print
press. Maybe even get the big "D" to show up himself.

The 25th is going to be even bigger then the 20th so lets start
planning this now!!!

Comments anyone?

There was a Delorean that I used to get rides in that was leased from
Summit Auto Leasing or Secutites auto Leasing in either Downey, CA or
Burbank, CA.

As far as I know they were the first owner of the car. I've been
trying to find the paperwork but they recently threw out their 20

I'm trying to track the car down as it has memories for me.

I'm pretty sure it was an 81 gray but cant be sure. It was an LA car

Anyone know anything?

Richard, I think we've just about killed this thread ourselves "hope so

just seems like they "the movies" didn't cause much if any harm when you can
pull up to a stop light and see people smile at you, not laugh.  They really
seem to like the opportunity to look the car over for a moment and most of
the time they only know what it is because of the movies.  Just my opinion.

Subject: Friendly owner in Los Angeles / Orange County area?

Willing be getting for OWN personal DMC in about 9 months or so.
Looking for local owners willing to offer advice, help with technical
stuff, look at cars to purchase (not quite yet on this), show off
their own units.

Help with any or all would be great. I'm located in S.E. LA county
right on the edge of Orange county.

Thanks all.

Jeremy

Dave:
The Cruise on my car (on it when I bought it) is attached on the engine bay,
driver's side.  Wiring heads forward to front of car and control cable is
routed along engine bay to back and comes in from the back.  I have not
examined it that closely, but when I did look at it, I don't remember
thinking that it could jam in any way.  I don't think I have any pictures
showing this set-up, but I will check my "stack" of DeLorean pictures to
see.
