I'm having a little trouble with my "D" when it is cold ( just after
starting). The engine will not produce enough power to pull the car out
of the wet paper bag. After the engine warms up a little, it will run
fine.
Another symptom, during the engine warm-up, the engine doesn't
oscillate. The "air pump" thing what ever it is and where ever it is
at.
Any Suggestions??

I would guess that sense you have water on both sides of the car,
you probably have a blockage in the drain tube or the connection
hose between the air box and the hose under the car has came loose.
ALSO, something that is rare, but I found the problem on a friends car,
is that it is possible for the air intake drain to get blocked and cause
rain water to fill up the air intake passage. ???

I was driving yesterday and noticed my temperature gauge has stopped
working. It is
now pointing straight down, way past the lowest mark I had jumped the car
earlier in
the day due to a dead battery, so the last thing I needed was another
problem.
Has anyone experienced a problem like this? How can I determine if the
temp. sending
unit is the problem? How easy in that to replace? I'm not even sure where
it is on
the engine. But, I know it is separate from the thermostat switch in the
coolant
pipe.
I hope to get this fixed before teh Cincinatti event. Although I've had no
overheating problems, I don't like the idea of driving six hours with no
gauge.
Thanks.

Bummer about your temperature gauge, Sean. With any luck the problem
is just a loose wire. Off hand I don't know where that sensor is, but
I'll
tell you a quick way to find it or any other part on any stock DeLorean.
Surf over to the DMC Houston Online Store:
http://www.usadmc.com
Enter the Online Parts Store and search for words like temp or thermo or
sensor. As your search finds part names that sound right, you can click
on the PDF hypertext and call up a picture of the part showing
approximately where it fits in the car. You should be able to find any
part in the car within a few minutes. All this is available for free.
If it
turns out you need a part you can order it from that screen just by
clicking your mouse.
Good luck!

If memory serves - the smaller rims were put on front because the front
lifted at high speed with larger rims - the aerodynamics of lowering the
front by using smaller rims is that at high speed the air pushes the
front down rather than air getting under it and lifting - remember the
front to rear weight ratio is 35 - 65

I carry information. At Nashville two years ago Rob Grady gave out a
*very* nice pamphlet describing some emergency repairs that can get
you out of a jam. I also carry my copy of the DeLorean Owners
Directory in case I need to seek help far from home.
Other items:
electronic multimeter
assorted screwdrivers
utility knife
duct tape
First Aid kit
fire extinguisher
cellular phone
1 gallon of antifreeze for aluminum engines
You cannot fit all this stuff, plus your luggage, in a DeLorean trunk. To
be safe on a long trip you really need a luggage rack.
Even on a short trip you should have a luggage rack collapsed in your
trunk. You never know when you'll need it to carry a flat tire.

Subject: DML: Lowering Cars
Hi Guys,
I'm Bill Swilley, the poor slob that lives and works in Saudi who only
gets to visit his car once or twice a year. I've just completed a 4,500
miles run in it from Houston to the Grand Canyon and back, with various
stops and detours along the way. One fun diversion was the run from
Phoenix up to Tortilla Flats with James Espey leading the way that he
described on these pages a few days ago. I plan to compose a detailed
account of my experiences with the car and the trip for those that might
be interested and invite such persons to drop me a quick line, and I
will send that as soon as I have it.
A couple of comments seem appropriate at this time, however,
particularly in response to the recent interest expressed in lowering
our cars. One of the major modifications that were made to my car prior
to the trip was the replacement of the springs with the "Euro" setup
from DMC in Houston. Stephen tells me that these are nothing more than
the original springs designed for the car and not used due to the then
new bumper height requirements. Apparently, a lot more engineering went
into these springs than the ones used for getting the cars into
production.
After over 5,000 miles of concentrated experience, I can honestly state
that this is the ONLY method that should be considered for lowering our
cars. The resultant height looks right, not "lowered", providing about
an inch of space above the tires to the wheel well, front and rear. The
ride may be very slightly firmer than original, but feels to me to be
more consistent front to rear. In the past, I have felt as if the front
was considerably softer than the rear, with the rear being overly harsh.
On the road and at speed, it feels rock solid and plenty smooth for long
distance travel. In town, there is no objectionable chopiness that is
so common to lowered cars, and the ramp angle is not so compromised as
to be a problem. My old Porsche 944 scraped the front dam a whole lot
more often than my D does now. In my limited attempts at high speed
cornering, I feel that the stability and control of the car has been
significantly improved. So, for those of you who feel cars should be
driven and not just show pieces, I urge you to consider it.
The other major improvement this trip was the refinishing of the wheels.
Mine is a 150,000+ mile former daily driver, and had accumulated a lot
of dings and chips in the wheels. We had the wheels buffed down to the
metal putting a soft sheen to them which is now protected with a clear
coat, and the wheels were balance with stick on weights on the interior
of the rims. The resulting appearance is not so far from stock as to be
offensive and, in fact, might not even be noticed if not sitting side by
side an original. Again, they just look right, probably the way they
should have come from the factory.
Enough for now. It was a great trip and I am already looking forward to
my next reunion with my babe.

Subject: DML: The Engine
Dear DML,
I have been thinking about a new project. Please email me direct
if you guys have any input. After doing all that engine work I am sort of
dissatisfied. My father has a brand new Eclipse GSX (all wheel drive
turbo) and that thing is so fast. It pins you to the seat. (pulls a lot
of G's!) anyway I sit in my car... a ~2.9 liter V6 and nothing... well
yeah it has some power and that I think is only because it is a five
speed. Other than that ... I am unhappy with its performance. I think
about the turbo kit offered for our cars and just think about how our poor
engines just can't handle it.. I know some out there that really like
them but I think about the reduced boost and how you just can't beat on
our weak little engines... After all our timing chains are like bycicle
chains. Ultimately what would make me and many others happy would be the
Legends engine... All that thing was, was our engine (strengthened!) with
twin intercoolers and twin turbos!
Now what I want to do is, buy an engine from Ohio, Tear it down
get a new stronger crankshaft made (if necessary.. i am not sure about the
crank) get new cams made, maybe a little tricked but just stronger..
(crane cams) I definitely want new pistons and connecting rods made
stronger and also the sleaves.. but I need to do a bit more research on
the sleaves, to see if that is truley necessary. I also want to get more
spark by using a Jacobs Omni Magnum (I think we can get this for our cars
and use them without any modification.) I want to use two nice large
intercoolers, well as large as our little engine compartment can let us
and two massive turbos. Well as massive as the math will let me for our
engines. I think if I beef up the timing chains that engine should be in
good shape. My goal is to beat Legends test time, they supposedly ran the
legends engine at 6000 rpm (max horse) for 200 hours without any system
failures... I want to exceed that. I am sure there would be a market for
this engine if it was basically a stock DeLorean engine with these
"Legends" type modifications. I will see to it that the engine outputs
more power than the legends but safely. I still want to use little cats
and exhaust because I want it to pass emissions. What do you guys think?
drop me a line.

Thanks Joe/DeLorean Services for your ideas.
The mystery remains -- why or how does the 12V feed to the blower
circuit breaker go dead??????
Only a handful of possibilities:
1. A break in the 12V feed -- where is the break likely to occur?
2. Are there any other overload protective devices on that circuit?
Fuses? Circuit breakers? None are identified on the schematic,
but we know the schematic is not accurate or complete.
3. A switch! The ignition switch is suppose to be the only switch
in
the circuit. When the blower circuit breaker is fed from
another
12V source, the ignition circuit works perfectly.

For people heading thru St Louis on their way to the Cinn event; most of
the
major East - West highways thru St Louis are under construction at the
bridge
crossings at the Mississippi. I-270 is down to 3 lanes, one each way and
a
reversable ( west bound in the am and east bound in the pm). I-40 east
bound
downtown across the river is CLOSED until maybe July due to damage and
I-70
east bound is closed from 4 to 6 PM everyday because of the same damage (
a
truck hit one of the on ramp support piers to the bridge and caused major
damage) . All the traffic from these closings is being dumped onto I-55
and
I-44 east bound so it naturally has turned into a parking lot. If your
going
thru St Louis to get to Cinn, if you're comming from the south side of
town
your best bet is to take I-255 on the south side of town to get into
Illinois.
If your comming from Kansas City on I-70 on the north side of town, I'd
take
I-270 across. It will move, but just not real fast. Hope this helps.

Don't go with 70 series tires. The DeLorean's final drive ratio is high
enough and the 70's series tires will raise it even higher. 245/50's work
as do 245/60's, although the latter will also raise the final drive ratio
a
bit. The 50 series actually lower it and improve performance a bit. Dunlop
offers tires in the DeLorean sizes but they are a pretty soft compund. A
friend that is running them goes through rear tires pretty fast.
Which Perelli series is available in the proper size. Are they performance
tires or just everyday steet tires?

Kayo,
I would give the Pirelli's a shot. From what I've heard, P600's handle
awsomely (stay away from P4000's!). I am currently running Goodyear GT+4
in sizes 205/60TR-14 and 245/60TR-15. The drive great, are year round (so
they are great on wet roads), look good, and are a great value (a set of 4
for around $275). When the steering wheel is cranked ALL THE WAY, the
front tires rub a little bit on the sway bar, but it's not a big problem.
Besides that, I have experienced no troubles with the tires. As far as
using 70 series tires, I would stay away from them. 60 series on size 235
tires are rather high profile as they are. I would think that using a 70
series would make the handling rather sloppy as the increased sidewalls
would tend to flex more.

Sean,
I have no incidents of failures to either the temp gauge or sender, this
afternoon I will try to determine why your pointer is out of position. The
sender for the gauge is located in the inside front portion of the right
side valve cover (appox. 5" down next to the intake manifold) and has a
green/blue wire. I will post another message tomorrow to tell you how to
test the circuit.

Kayo,
Pirelli's we'll do the job, their not my choice, but I understand your
situation. 245's will work and should not cause a wheel well problem
except
in extreme cases ( big bumps or extreme cornering). It will, however,
change your speed readings. There will be no noticeable change in
performance, the change in height will be in perceptible. FYI the front
tires have no room for over size tires, you must stay with the 195's.

Steve,
Yes, the only photo that I have seen is in the, hard to find, DeLorean,
Stainless Steel Illusion, Page 159. Save yourself the trouble of trying to
locate a photo, it looks very much like a standard Gruman. From close
analysis it looks as if the photo's may have been doctored to add "DMC-80"
to an existing vehicle. I to would be interested if anyone has additional
information on this subject.

Subject: DML: Water Pump Leak or Just Hoses?
Well, just under two weeks until I was taking my DeLorean to Ohio for the
convention and my car has started leaking coolant down the front of the
water pump, although I can't tell where the actual source is. I do know
that it is not the large side hoses, but I don't know about the hoses on
the back side of the pump. Last night I though I heard a quiet vibration
sound coming from the engine compartment when parking the car for the
night yesterday. I revved the engine a little a couple of times and the
sound went away so I forgot about it. This morning I noticed a trail of
water coming from under the engine and saw water dripping every couple of
seconds. The belts are fine and the noise didn't reappear when I started
it today.
Should I suspect just the back side hoses or the whole water pump? I'll
be calling Rob Grady on Monday to order the hoses, but am considering
just ordering his whole water pump kit for $3xx.
Thanks all once again!

To Whom it may concern.
My name is Stever Barber. I run a autobody
repair shop. 2 years ago I aquired a Delorean
frame. It was for a restoration project for a
customer but they ran out of time and money.
I am trying to sell this frame to help recover
my loss. It has been chemically striped and
powder coated in black. Perfect shape and
has hardware to mount an automatic transmission.
I am asking $1800 for it. Please spread the word
around to your club. I am located in Lexington

Subject: DML: Rear Shocks
Hallo fello DMCers,
Re. ADVICE ON REPLACEMENT REAR SHOCKS?
Greetings from Hong Kong! I have just bought a gorgeous '81 manual DMC
in Los Angeles at Easter, an ambition I have had since I was a schoolboy
seeing the cars being produced in Dunmurry (I come from N.Ireland but
now work as an Architect/City Designer in S.E.Asia).
I will drive my new toy cross country in Sept./Oct. to Baltimore and
ship her back to N.Ireland to be stored on my farm. Before that trip I
wish to replace my rear shocks as the existing ones are 'on their way
out!' Is the norm to replace the existing shocks (Girling?) or is there
an upgrade available? Any info. would be gratefully received.
Cheers, IAN

There is a small amount of bad news for the owners who are planning
on attending the Biloxi meeting. One of the LA owners has sold his car
and I currently do not know where the car is. If the new owner is
reading this could you please contact me. I would like to invite you to
attend a meeting I will be putting together for owners in this area.
If anyone else in LA would like to contact me just to let me know
they are in the area, feel free to do so. It is always exiting to know
that there are other owners and other curious people nearby.

Subject: DML: Starting problem diagnosed as ballast resistor wire failure
Well - ole #10688 is back on the road again. FYI - 82 model 50,000 miles
- - I'm original owner since Sept 1983 purchased from Consolidated.
What is real interesting is that the main problem I was having seems
similar to one that I have seen discussed on the net. The car would
start fine and idle when it was cold. Then after driving no more that
3-4 miles, the car would go dead - JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIE. (Some of you
can probabaly relate - it is quite embarrasing being in a Delorean on
the side of the road). Anyway, the first time two times it happened, the
car restarted after it cooled down. I suspected a fuel system problem as
it would run (barely) with full throttle and the starter engaged. (I
tried banging my head on the steering wheel but it only got the steering
wheel sweaty). The third and last time it quit, it would not restart at
all. After checking all the relays and fuel pump, I finally threw up my
hands and ante'd up $400.00 for a flat bed trip to DMC Houston. Stephen
got it running after replacing the fuel pump and accumulator (both of
which were original equipment). I suggested that he drive it home for a
couple of days just to make sure. Then it happend to him - twice it
conked out. Guess what they found?? A wire going to the right side of
the ballast resistor was so corroded that the connector was holding on
with just a couple of strands.

Subject: DML: Re: Water Pump Leak or Just Hoses?
Chase,
Your water leak is most likely coming from a loose hose clamp at one of
the
two short hoses that run from the left and right side of the pump behind
the thermostat. Those clamps can usually be tightened without any
disassembly. If the leak is from the pump rear hoses your in for a more
complex procedure. Also, check the weep hole at the pump shaft, it is
located at the bottom side of the pulley shaft, a small mirror will help
to
see this area. If you would like to determine where any of the leaks are
just drive your car to any service center and ask them to do a coolant
system pressure test, this will pinpoint any leaks. If you want you can
invest appox. $100 and buy your own pressure tester. To temporarily seal
any leaks a serving of "Bars Stop Leak" will safely stop the leak until
you
can have it corrected.

Hi Jason,
This thread has been worked hard. The best thing for any potential 'D'
owner
to do is the easiest and most obvious, ask your Insurance Agent. That's
what
I did. I gave him a list of three cars that I was interested in buying
and
asked what the damage would be. Guess what...the 'D' was by far the
cheapest.
Based on that, it went to the top of the list and I've been a proud owner
since 1996. BTY, I live in Los Angles where car insurance ain't cheap.
Good
luck, Joe
