Subject: Manual Transmission Sensor? What is this thing??
Hi Gang!
Before I asked the list I checked both the archives and scoured the parts
and service books....maybe I'm just missing something. If this seems like
a
stupid question - I apologize in advance.
I've been restoring my frame in the last month and since the engine and
transmission are out of the car I decided to do the exhaust manifold
gaskets
(GREAT kit from PJ Grady).
Tonight while removing the manifold on the drivers side, I came across a
hanging wire which looks like it's connected to a sensor (?) at the base
of
the manual transmission where it bolts to the engine. This wire has been
cut (for a long time by the looks of things). It's on the drivers side
of
the transmission right near the catalytic converter (but again it goes
directly into the transmission - at the pressure plate/flywheel).
Any ideas what this is supposed to be for?
Thanks

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
I wonder why though the tach is buried in the red.. is this a hard fix?
With
only 400+ miles on it I wonder why this would be! Otherwise, THIS is so
very tempting!!!!
Cheers,
Richard

Subject: Re: fender reproduction
I have looked into the cost of making a die to reproduce the fender. It
was
kind of a what if type project and my job is to make dies. I make steel
residential door dies and we stamp the emboss into them so I have some
experience with them. A hard production tool will run well into the
$100,000
++++ range depending on qualith and where it is built. A soft tool can be
made for much less and is good for about 100 hits then its trash. Either
way
the cost per part will be far above what anyone would want to pay at this
point and as James says the demand is not there because you still can find
them. This may change once they cannot be found.
If anyone wants to make a tool I have the presses to run it.

Subject: Re: Re: Historic Blunders
The British Gov't did not confiscate the dies for the stainless steel
panels. They were sold to a Salmon fisherman as scrap metal by the Thyssen
GmbH & Co to recoup on the tremendous losses in encountered with DeLorean.
JZD went around on the talkshow circuit after his cocaine trial and
said
that the British ruined the dies and threw them into the middle of
Galloway
Bay. NOT TRUE.
THE DIES WERE MADE BY THREE DIFFERENT COMPANIES IN THE REPUBLIC OF
IRELAND AND GERMANY. THEY WERE THE PROPERTY OF THE COMPANIES NOT THE UK
GOVERNMENT OR DELOREAN MOTOR CO. LTD.
When DMC went bankrupt in February 1982 it had a very hard time paying
for the parts and supplies DMC owed to various leading automobile
suppliers
like Vita Cortex Ltd. Vita Cortex made the seat cushions for the car. DMC
could not pay because is used up a $25,000,000.00 line of credit it had
with
my company.
JZD used up DMC's available credit from the 25 million, in order to
increase production on the cars instead of paying the companies that DMC
owed
for the parts and supplies. Renault was the hardest hit. The companies
wanted
payment in some form or another, so it was not very happy to accept the
losses from DMC. Many companies went bankrupt supplying parts for the
DeLorean. These companies are still listed as creditors in the bankruptcy
suit. Thyssen GmbH & Co received an offer from fisherman for the dies and
accepted his offer.
STAINLESS STEEL- BSC Stainless steel is in Sheffield England. BSC
built a
250 million dollar plant in Europe to provide stainless steel for
DeLorean and the rest of the market. BSC only made the steel, NOT
THE
PANELS FOR THE DMC.
MOLDS FOR DMC BODY - The inner hood and the rear louvre molds, the
front
fenders molds and the dies for the assembly of the outer hood were made by
THYSSEN MASCHINEBAU GmbH. This is a German Company. The fenders, outer
hood, louvre, and inner hood parts were stamped/fabricated at THYSSEN
MASCH.
GmbH not at DMC. DMCL only assembled the hood assemblies at the factory.
The
Fenders and Louvres' came in huge crates via Germany and Ireland to
Belfast.
MOLDS FOR UPPER AND LOWER BODY PANELS were made by August Lapple
GmbH
& Co. They are located in the Republic of Ireland. August Lapple is a
German
company automobile tool and die company. It was started in 1919. Lapple
contracted with car companies in 1968 to supply automotive plastics. This
manufacturer made the VARI body molds. These molds are in the Columbus
Ohio
Warehouse. These molds were used in the body press building at DMCL.
Dies for the inner and outer rear quarter panels were supplied by
ALLEGIARE- WERKE GmbH. George Allegiare established his company in 1906.
Allegiare became one of the most important German automobile suppliers
to
the automotive industry.
These panels were not stamped at DMCL.
These companies supply all of the leading automobile companies in the
common
market. Companies like GM, Ford, Chrysler, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Lotus,
etc.,
etc.
DeLorean has a history of not telling the truth. There are 5-6 books
written
about this.

Subject: Blower Motor Reversal
Thanks to all who sent ideas and options to me on the AC/heater blower
motor
that ran backwards. I elected to try the rework of the blower as described
by Dan (many thanks!!) and it worked.
The rotation of the motor 180 degrees to the base reverses the direction.
It does take a bit of resourcefulness to remount the positive lug so the
plate metal plates mount flush again (the lug originally sits in a stamped
depression and that must be accounted for), but the unit works great now.
I
also had to add a small extension wire with a male and female spade
connector to hook up to the positive lug since it is now further away from
its original position.
All this just in time for central South Carolina's famous summers.
Again, my thanks to the list members.

Subject: Consumable Parts
Hello All,
I have been a Delorean owner for all of 4 days now.
It's an '81(OCT. 19881), grey interior 5-speed in case anyone is
interested. I was wondering if anyone had a list or knows of where
a list can be obtained for consumable parts ie: brake pads, oil and
air filters stuff like that that may be the same as other cars that parts
are readily available for at such places like napa or auto zone. I have
heard that an oil filter off of a volkswagon golf will work but I am
mainly
interested in brake pads right now. I have 3 oil filters and 2 air filters
that came with the car. Thanks in advance for any information.

Its the rpm/timing sensor for the dealer diagnostic system that DMC
never
invented. I've seen mechanics throw it away when doing the clutch.
No big deal

I guess I will add my 2 cents to this story- I have heard from a very
knowledgeable(sp?) DeLorean owner (at a huge collector car gathering at
Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte NC), that the body dies were in fact
dumped into the North Channel between N. Ireland and England. Supposedly
Margret Thatcher hated the DeLorean, and had this done. I personally think
IF the British government still had these dies and things, that they might
use them and try and recover some of the money they lost by backing
DeLorean. That is just my opinion- Louie Golden (DeLorean owner wanna-be)

I have to agree with James' statement about the low demand for left
fenders.
I sold 2 in December of '95, and don't recall a single inquiry since then.
As for there "only being 10 remaining" I have more than that (both new and
used) myself, so I know that statement is wrong. Its harder to find an
early hood than a left fender. Also, PNDC has had excellent luck locally
with a "Dent Wizard" paintless dent removal service on smaller dents.
