Subject: Re: Halon
Halon is a brand name for a class of chemiicals more accurately
described as brominated fluorocarbons. These chemicals stop fire by
releasing chlorine anc bromine gas which compete with oxygen in a fire
and stop oxygen from reacting with burnable materials. Consequently,
extinguishing the fire.
This class of chemicals has not been banned, only certain formulations
that are not as stable in ultraviolet light exposure. For example FE-36
is still a halon. It is only a larger molecule that is more UV stable
in our environment when it is released.
The only reason it is not called a halon is because the word "Halon" is
now associated with a "bad" thing. The chemistry remains the same.
