To get the motor to idle smooth all 6 cylinders must be within 5% of
each other in all respects. All of the fuel injectors must have
perfect patterns and similar pressures, all spark plugs gapped and in
good shape, all ignition wiring in top shape, all cylinder pressures
within 5% and so on. If you have 1 cylinder out a little the idle
drops and then the idle motor tries to compensate. By time the
correction kicks in you are on the better cylinders so you overshoot
because the correction was too late so now the idle motor tries to
slow the motor down and now you have the hunting you notice. Start by
checking the cylinder pressures. If they aren't within 5% nothing will
help. If they are close have the fuel injectors checked and cleaned on
an injector tester. Properly set up the engine can be "super smooth".
For the noise you hear check the idler bearings for the fan belt,
they get noisy before they fail. Very common for Deloreans to have the
idle improperly set up, most mechanics don't understand the system so
they try to "fix" things by turning adjustments.

That's interesting, I'll have to check that tool out and add it to the
collection of items in my DeLorean repair kit.
Just incase you may not have this same item on you, and
something happens out on the road, there is another option for
emergencies: bubble gum. Just chew until the sugar is gone,
put the wad on the end of a stick, and polk the item you need to
pick up. Not the ideal way to retrieve things, but it does work.

Your suggestion about vendors getting their money up front for a product
they are interested in bringing to market is an excellent one. If any of the
established vendors were to propose a product and it appealed to me I'd be
willing to pay for it in advance with the idea that my money would be
returned in a reasonable time if the development was abandoned.
Speaking of side mirrors, one idea I'd like to see come to market is a side
mirror which could easily replace the original side mirror but that would
incorporate a red turn signal on its outer edge. A white curtsey light at
the bottom to illuminate the ground below it might not be a bad idea either.
I've seen both those features on some high end new model cars and SUVs I
think they both are a good safety feature. The mirror would have to rather
closely resemble the original mirrors so as to not spoil the original
beautiful look to the car.

Two months ago, I have the exact same problem. The cause of
this problem is dirty fuel line. One of my injector does not spray
well. Once the injector is cleaned, the car idle smoothly.

I would like to find out more about the DMC who's photo is posted in
the group's album (Posted: 28-Feb-2002 by tmpintnl)... The red DMC.
