Hello Mr. Espey,
Let's slow down for a minute or two and clarify some of facts regarding
Concours d' Elegance competition as it relates to DeLorean automobiles.
Permit me to begin with this statement: This issue will not be resolved with
a few off-the-cuff remarks by a few uninformed, wannabe, know-it-alls in
this forum.
Let's start by eliminating some of the people who, using the automotive
vernacular, begin by "running off at the mouth before putting their brain
into gear"! Let's start by agreeing on one given fact; I own a DeLorean
automobile.
Unlike the prevailing desire of several of the individuals who post
regularly to this forum and would like to modify the rules of Concours
d'Elegance competition to fit their personal poor quality automobiles and
modifications, you must admit at the onset that each of you has a very
limited knowledge of what real Concours d'Elegance competition is all about.
Let's also play this game by the following rules: Each member of the
DeLorean Mailing List who is participating in this exercise and/or is
monitoring the progress of this effort goes back into the archives of the
DML and reads each of the previous postings of the respondents by searching
by their first and/or last name and by their posted V.I.N.
For example: Mr. Teitelbaum, (VIN #10757) I seem to remember I read
somewhere you posted that you won a second place trophy in the Concours
d'Elegance at the Cleveland event in the past. However, you neglected to
advise us who won First Place and how many other cars were competing that
day in Concours d'Elegance competition. If memory serves me correctly,
there were only 4 DeLorean automobiles competing in Concours d'Elegance area
of the competition that day. We're not talking about daily drivers or
Peoples Choice cars. Second place in an "Ugly Woman" contest gives you
neither the right nor a stake in how the rules are created, interpreted and
applied. Mr. Teitelbaum, pause for a moment and consider the fact that you
simply own a DeLorean automobile like all the other owners who monitor this
forum. Second place does not qualify you to write the rules for us!
Mr. Battles, (VIN: 06569): How many DeLorean automobiles have you owned? If
we search the archives of the DML using your name and/or VIN number will we
discover that you have had problems with this and perhaps other DeLorean
automobiles?
Mr. Marc Levy : Didn't you have some problem with your car when you refused
to heed the advice of DeLorean service facility professional to repair
your exhaust manifolds and/or head gaskets and overheated on the way home
from the service facility? I don't recall the exact posting or how long ago
it was posted, but I'm sure we can all look it up under your name! Doesn't
your DeLorean have a turbo charger? Is it lowered?
Mr. Michael Pack: How many DeLorean automobiles have you owned? Do you own
one at this time? Have you ever entered a Concours d'Elegance for DeLorean
automobiles?
What gives you the right to require the Concours d'Elegance judges to list
their credentials? Get into the competition and let's see what you bring to
the table!
Mr. Knut Grimsrud: Well I am impressed with the fact that you can read the
judging manual and have the willingness to review and study your judging
assignment. Have you ever participated in DeLorean automobile Concours
d'Elegance competition? How did you fare? Just because one goes to medical
school and reads a few books on procedures, does that make that individual a
qualified doctor? If you require 30 minutes to judge a portion of a
DeLorean automobile and another qualified individual can judge the same area
in 10 or 15 minutes, does that make you a better judge or just a slower
judge?
Marty Maier: Just because you are a DML Moderator, what are your
credentials that permit you the opportunity to question the motives and/or
qualifications of Michael Pack? Can we look-up your name and VIN history in
the archives of the DML and read the condition of your car and your
qualifications as a prospective judge?
Now for the time being, this little exercise brings us back to Mr. James
Espey's comments. To begin: 1. Do you own a DeLorean automobile Mr. Espey?
2. If so, what is your complete Vehicle Identification Number? 3. Is this
the same 1981 DeLorean automobile for which you bought a used 1983 Door from
Bob Miller in North or South Carolina and installed on your car when you
were a Moderator on the DML a while ago? 4. Was that a correct replacement
for a damaged door on car which may be judged for Concours d'Elegance
competition some day or evaluated for investment purposes? Did you advise
the purchaser that the door had been changed? By the way, there are at
least 3 different DeLorean automobile door panel configurations.
Mr. Espey, how can you assert that DeLorean One and the DeLorean Owners
Association were willing to "let it (Concours) die"? Upon what facts do you
base this allegation? My documentation reveals that Ed Bernstein of
DeLorean One wrote the first Concours d'Elegance judging manual and rule
book in January 1986 to be used in the 1st DeLorean automobile Concours
d'Elegance, sponsored by DeLorean One in the gardens of the Armor Estate in
Lake Forest, Illinois? Did you have a driver's license in January 1986?
When did you buy your DeLorean automobile?
Why do you state that the DeLorean Owner's Association let the DeLorean
automobile Concours d'Elegance competition die? Do you know who Dorothy
Bradley Gates is? Do you know who Anthony Ieradi is? Do you know any of
the Concours DeLorean judges and DeLorean Owners Association Concours
d'Elegance judges who have re-worked and refined the original DeLorean
competition regulations from 1986 until October 1999 when The DeLorean Motor
Company Concours was FIRST held in St. Louis, Missouri at the DeLorean
Owners Association Exposition that year? Mr. Espey, that was only 30 months
ago!
Mr. Espey, you didn't "write the book", you simply expanded upon some of the
guidelines that had been in place for 14 years with additional information
discovered in documentation which was unknown by the general ownership prior
to transfer of ownership by the KAPAC Company in Columbus, Ohio.
Now, If the DeLorean Owners Association held a DeLorean automobile Concours
d'Elegance in St. Louis, Missouri as recently as 30 months ago, how can you
say they let it die?
You also neglected to say that Ed and Millie Bernstein flew to the DeLorean
Owners Association Expo in St. Louis, Missouri from California that year and
after the Expo flew directly from St. Louis to New York City to board the
Concorde for a round-trip wedding anniversary trip to London and Paris. You
also forgot to mention that Bernstein/DeLorean One elected to forgo their
sponsorship of the Concours d'Elegance (Concours DeLorean) that year because
of the limited amount of time and personnel available to them because of
their conflicting, tight vacation schedule.
Now if you can all take a breather and ponder the points mentioned; do a
little homework and research into the DML archives; check the past issues of
DeLorean World Magazine and get your facts straight, we can explore this
matter further in the near future.
By the way. a "concourse" is a large open space for crowds, as in an airline
terminal.
If you can't spell Concours d'Elegance, how can you dummies write the rule
book and compete as a participant? Surely, none of you have earned the
privilege of using the word "Concours d'Elegance" in it's abbreviated form,
you simply can't spell it!

NOTE: Please keep in mind that this is all completely theoretical- I have not
actually done this. I'm just curious as to how one would do such a thing if one
was actually stupid enough to do what I am curious about.
Now, does anyone out there know a good starting place to set the 3mm CO2
adjustment screw thingy if they were actually dumb enough to diasemble to air
metering housing and play around in there?(Perhaps messing around with the
adjustment while they were in there...) I'm looking for measurements, number of
threads visible, or anything that may help.
Once again, I have not actually done this- I would never, ever, ever, be that
idiotic. Never.
Oh yeah, if Ed Herrmann's out there- sorry I haven't kept in touch. This damn
car hasn't run for about 6 months now, and I haven't had too much time to screw
around with it. If it ever runs again, we'll start that Savannah D Club.

DeLoreans in to the Memphis contest. The sole purpose of my posting was to
try and put things in perspective. It seemed that a few folks were getting a
bit uptight and forgetting that this is supposed to be a fun and relaxing

We should all hope for a huge turn out at Ken's event, he's been working hard

to get together and shoot the poop with other DeLorean owners and have some

I for one am extremely grateful to Ken for his work, and DMC Houston for
spending their time and money to create the judging manual. Regardless of
where you choose to purchase your parts, this is a small community and it
does not pay to sling crap.
One thing 9/11 has taught me is not to sweat the small stuff.

yes there is in fact something you are missing.. otherwise it would work.

just kidding...
take apart the handle assembly (rubber cover, and carpeted piece). there are
two brake lines connected to it on a 'y' rocker... of sorts. the wires end
in a ball that is held in two slots on the rocker-thing if one is
disconnected the other won't get the leverage it needs to hold the brakes
properly.

i just had to bend the bracker back, because it was mangled, and then use
some vice grips to pull both balls back through their slots.
my brake now works like a charm... well the parking break does.. .the pedal
brakes need some work still....so do alot of other things.... heheh

The parking brake adjustment for the DeLorean was never properly documented
by the factory and could be a mystery if the proper procedure is not
followed. Go to the DeLorean Services website at
http://shopping.oraclesmallbusiness.com/dsvstore and select Brakes/Wheels in
the Tech Information section on the right side of the page. Click on Parking
Brake Adjustment make a printed copy and bring it to your mechanic.
If after adjustment the brakes still do not hold contact me for more
information.

The reason the fuel in the tank gets hot is more a cause of the hot water
from the engine heating the tank and fuel as it makes it way up to the front
of the car to the radiator and then returns to the engine. Remember this
water coming from the engine is normally around 190 -200 deg F, and when you
just sit in traffic it gets hotter then that. The water lines running down
both sides of the bottom of the fuel tank and enclosed between the frame
rails and belly pan and the fuel tank act as heaters for the fuel inside the
tank. And yes, the less fuel in the tank, the easier it is to heat.

In the process of debugging my noisy fuel pump, I started tracing down
another noise that I thought might have been my fuel pump, but it turned out
to be the buzzer module. The sound was very similar to letting go of an old
mechanical dial on a telephone. I have heard this buzzer make clicking
noises before instead of the usual seat belt buzz on occasion, so I KNEW
that this other noise couldn't be from the same source. After all, it
didn't behave like a bad buzzer. It would be totally silent unless the
engine was running. Having only the ignition on wouldn't trigger it. And
then at idle I could barely hear it -- not enough to locate the source.
Then with increased RPMs, the clicking noise would increase in frequency and
volume. The only times I could really hear it well was when driving at
highway speeds, so I thought for the longest time that it must have been the
speedometer cable. But how do you locate a noise under the dash while you
are driving at 60mph? I assumed it was the fuel pump or maybe even the
tachometer. I even suspected it was coming from my radio until I unplugged
the speaker. I have listened to this thing make a barely noticeable rattle
for several thousand miles worth of driving! And just unplugging the buzzer
wasn't good enough. That stopped the clicking noise, but then without the
wires holding the circuit board still, that made a new rattle! It is hard
to describe with what pleasure I removed that thing from my car. In a
subtle way it was like banging my head on a wall. It feels so good when you
stop.
Anyway, can anyone say how the metal plate that holds the buzzer, wiper
module & flasher is supposed to mount under the dash? There are two sheet
metal clips, but they are facing different directions. Does the thing go in
with a twist? Or is one of the clips backwards?

Hello Everyone,
I recently wanted to upgrade the fan relay so that I had a relay for
each fan. This was a rather simple task so I took it a step
farther. I added a daughter board i built so that the relays work in
sequence. The first fan turns on, then 8-10 seconds later the other
turns on. It's a cheap mans fanzilla, but can be built from parts
sold at a local radio shack. If anyone is intrested i'll send you a
diagram on how to build it, if a few people want it i'll probably
write up a decent how to.

Walt, I don't know what it is, but I had one fuel pump that made more noise,
so I replaced it, and that was 2 1/2 years ago, I see no difference in hot or
cold. I hear all the post about it, but have never experienced it myself, 110
or 40 degrees, no difference.

more than likely just hot fuel for whatever reason. You live in a hotter

My #3302 has been an absolute joy since the day two months ago when I
rescued her from her naughty PO. So what that something has broken
EVERY SINGLE TIME I have driven her.
This week, I read in the archives thta the three brass screws on the
intake manifold are to be lightly seated. Did that, and the car now
idles at 600RPM with no accessories on.
The idle motor vibrates with the engine off, so that's OK from one
perspective (thank the wallet Gods). The valve on the right valve
cover (forgot that bugger's name) buzzes like an angry hornet, and
the full throttle switch when pressed increases the idle about 50 RPM.
Now for the odd thing... There is a connector directly atop the
splash shield (recall thing above the full throttle switch). There
is clearly a place for TWO plugs to connect there, but there is only
one connector. Maybe that's not odd?
Begging for suggestions. I've searched the archive for HOURS!.

I was wondering if someone had a diagram or a how to on how to modify
the fan relay so that each has it's seprate relay? I know a good
amount of people have had good look with this setup. Once i do this
then i could come up with a microcontroller setup to have a delay so
that the one fan comes on after the orgional, some sort of delay.

Subject: Possible Car Show
Hi, I believe I posted a while ago about a possible car show here in Richmond
Virginia. I am 16 and the head of a Car Club at my school and have undertaken
the task of organizing a Car Show on Campus of all exotic makes. I owned and
restored an 1983 DeLorean (vin 16727) and would love if some of these exotic
and beautiful cars near the VIrignia area would come. The show is open to
lots of other makes too, Lotus, BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche,
but I need people committed to make this show happen. It will be on October
6, Sunday and should prove to be a wonderful day to have many cars scattered
around a beatiful school campus. PLease respond to my private email if you
have interest and I am begging some of you to please show up, I want this
show to be a success in showing the public the DeLorean car in setting among
hyper-exotics.

Subject: clearwater/tampa delorean
Hi, I was wondering if anyone on the list looked at a black delorean that
was for sale on ebay in the summer of 2000.
It was in clearwater, florida, and had a damaged rear fascia.
Does anyone on the list inspect this car?

Shain, The Fan Fix Dual 2 x 2 is made for each fan to run on is on relay. The
way it's designed and wired, there is no need to stagger.

What can I say but wow! I do have to admit though that the one thing I
don't understand "Yahh Sure" is what you mean by the blower speed. Is that
the fan speed selected inside the car with the selector switch, positions 1
through 4?
I have a FanZilla so I also only have one C/B. DMC Joe advised me after I
bought it that since the FanZilla already has C/B's there was no need for a
second as it would be redundant. The car still has the other C/B though. I
have a basic understanding of the cooling fans and there cycling with the
exception of some of the things you mentioned.
Those being "blower speed affect the cycling, sensitivity of the otterstat,
how circuit breaker reacts, low and high pressure switches affect the
cycling.
The last I tend to confuse with the freon level. I would think many if not
all members would benefit from an indepth explaination of the cooling fans
with the A/C on if nothing else. When the A/C is off is fairly straight
forward, or is it.
In my case, the fans have cycled about every 5 seconds since having the
freon system serviced. That's with the A/C on of course. DMC Joe says I
should replace the cycle switch now that I have re-adjusted it as they are
preset at the factory. I don't mind doing that but do wish the mistakes in
the article had been caught before I did this. If anyone has any advise and
would like to let me know off list that would be fine. I don't want to clog
up the list with the long explanations something like this might require.

Steve, Is your car automatic or standard. On the standars shift, all are not
used. Sounds like everything is wired ok since the FTswitch is working and
the idle speed motor is working. Re adjust the lower screw on the throttle
arm to raise the idle if your trying to do that, then readjust the top screw
to make sure the idle speed motor is still kicking in. It's on the site.
