Ed - I have gotten water on the engine during detailing, and then
experienced some misfiring as well. It turned out that water had
seeped down into the spark plug wells, causing shorts at the plugs. A
quick suction of the water cleared up the condition. Other people
that I know have experienced the same issue. I don't know if you've
checked this, but it's kind of a subtle thing.

Ed, After checking vacuum and the plug wires and the obvious things, you
might want to warm the car up and let a shop check the warm control
pressure.
If the bucking is really pronounced, then there could be a fuel delivery
problem. Has the fuel filter been changed lately?

I would recomend you replace the ignition wires and spark plugs
unless you know for sure that they are not very old and have not
broken down. If you spilled any anti-freeze and it got into the spark
plug wells because the seals on the wires leaked that would cause an
intermittant miss. If you want to check vacuum just temporaraly plug
off all of the vacuum hoses at the engine. A vacuum leak would tend to
be more regular and have it's greatest effect on the idle. If you have
ANY doubts about the automatic trans slipping test the line pressure.
A disconnected vacuum line to the modulater would affect shifting.
Make sure it is not leaking, plugged, or disconnected. It is difficult
to work on the front of the motor but that is where most of the vacuum
hoses are. If the idler pulley bearings are noisy they should be
replaced, they aren't expensive and it isn't difficult.

To rule out the transmission slipping, check the tachometer to see if it
revs while it 'slips'.

I had the same problem. You can't tell by just looking at it without
disassembling it. I rebuilt the mode switch, but it still didn't cure the
problem. Put in a different mode switch, "used but supposedly working" ...
no
improvement. I hooked up a small piece of clear hose to siphon on by mouth
and used it to see if I could tell if the actuators worked... the one I
tested did. And see if I could detect any difference in the mode switch,
which I could. I could say "crude but effective," but for the fact I
still
couldn't cure my problem. So we'll leave it at "crude." Fortunately I was
scheduled for service at PJ Grady. (Exhaust manifolds, etc.) Rob combined
parts from both mode switches to make one good one. Checked and
glassbeaded
the rusted (rheostat?) in the motor area, and redid my fuse block. (Oh
yeah,
high fan speed wasn't working either. Arghhh!) And he noticed a loose
wire
in back of the switch. I have big hands, and no eyeballs on the end of my
fingers, so that doesn't help. Rob fixed all that, and now it works great.
You can always send your mode switch to Rob or your favorite D vendor to
check out and either rebuild or replace. Now my D sounds great, defrosts
great... it was worth the wait!

I didn't see a reply... maybe I missed it. Don't use the jack that comes

the car. A nice safe place to jack is where garages place their hydraulic
lift pads... just behind the front wheel or in front of the rear wheel.
Take
a peek under there. It's a nice, big flat area.

This weekend while visiting a friend of mine in
Pensacola, we happen on this Delorean around the I-65
area in Mobile. It had a personalized tag 'AT88MPH',
different looking side skirts and a rear wing, and
REALLY low to the ground. My friend who has a 1998
Mustang GT asked if it was quick (I haven't driven
mine in awhile due to a tranny problem but) I said
"no, don't waste your gas or possibly getting a
ticket" but he decides to see if the guy in the
Delorean would run him. My friend looked over at him,
threw him a rev and then gave him a 3 count in case
he was game, and he was. I was amazed! He pulled us
by about 2 carlengths up to 110 mph! I was wondering
if the owner was on the list and if this was the
famous 'Houston Engine' upgrade I've been hearing so
much about?? I'm deciding on what to do to my
Delorean (bad tranny) and after seeing this with my
own eyes really makes me want to get back on restoring
it!
