Richard,

I've had the prob you are having before.  It turned out to be that the
computer governor cable(s) had gotten burnt on the exhaust manifold.  Check
the wires running from the engine compartment down to your tranny and check
for any signs of burns to the cables.

Hope this helps,

Duke

Might try disconnecting the kickdown microswitch --one of the two that are
actuated by the throttle spool at wide open throttle. The other one cuts off
the A/C compressor. Unplug both if you can't easily tell which is which.
There's an inline connector a few inches downstream from the switches; just
separate them there and drive the car. If the switch is the culprit the car
will now drive fine, but won't downshift when you floor it.

The switch is supposed to cause a 3 to 2 (or even to first, depending on
vehicle speed) downshift when you floor the accelerator. I've only seen one
of these switches fail, but it caused erratic downshifts when cruising along
in third, ocasional strange upshift points, and some second gear hold
problems. Worked fine when it was cold. Longshot, but worth a try.

Shifting in the Delorean once underway in drive 3 is entirely
controlled by the govenor computer assembly. If you do indeed have a
shifting problem then that is where to go. There are some simple
things to check first though. Fluid level and condition. Shift linkage
adjustments. Throttle cable adjustments. The integerity of the wiring
to and the downshift microswitch (if the wiring is burnt and grounds
out it will force downshifts). Bad connections to the large plug on
the firewall. Make sure that what you feeling is downshifts and not
slipping, check the line pressure. If all of these things check out
then you could have a bad shift computer. Installing the lights will
only confirm that the shift computer is indeed shifting the trans and
you already know that what you want to find out is why. A bad shift
computer will tend to act up more when heated, sounds like bad solder
joints and can be easily resoldered. Refer to the archives.

You still don't know where the turn signals are getting their power.
With a missing #4 fuse that circuit must be tapping off of another
circuit if it is working. If you are refering to the service manual
M:07:03 #4 on the early vins did power the stop lights also so if #18
is installed and being used the stop lights are getting power from it
and not #4. You could be confusing #5. this supplies power to the
brake light indicater in the instrument panel. It lights up if you are
low on brake fluid or the emergency brake is on. The best thing to do
is to go over everything circuit by circuit. On the subject of fuses
if the fuseholders do not retain their tension they were overheated
and shoud be replaced. As for better connections Eastwood sells a
compound for improving electrical connections. Try
www.eastwoodcompany.com.

  Robert,

I currently have 2 Delorean engines and a 3.0 Eagle engine all torn apart
and scattered all over my garage. The intent was to build a 3.0 D engine for
my car, well........  even tho the 2 engines are both PRV units and similar
in design, that's about where it stops. These 2 engines are completely
different on the insides. The only parts that will interchange are the oil
pump and timing chains. Everything else is different, the crank, rods,
pistons and sleeves, the block, heads, intake and exhaust, and everything
else. The D engine is an "odd fire" unit while the E engine is an "even fire"
unit. This means the way the cylinders operate is even different between the
two engines.
About the only thing that does fit is the tranny from the D will bolt up
to the E engine. But the engine mounts on the E engine are in a different
place and will not fit the D frame. The bottom cradle ( w/ engine mounts )
from the D engine will fit the E engine, but it's a lot of work to tear the
bottom ends off each motor to swap cradles. It actually involves getting into
the crankshaft main caps and stuff. If you do swap cradles and pans, then the
complete E engine can be bolted into a Delorean frame.
But you're not even half way there yet, because the E engine uses a
completely different ignition system and electric fuel injection system which
will not work with the original D electric's, so they must then be adapted,
thru the use of entirely new electronics, to work on the D.  And, nope, no
luck. The original D ignition and fuel systems will not fit the E engine, not
even the entire intake manifold system. The spread between the D heads and
the E heads is different and the intakes will not swap, not even close. And
the E heads are not even bored to accept the rear mounted D distributor nor
does the E cam include a gear to drive the D distributor if you do bore a
hole in the head for it.
Like I said, for both being PRV engines, they sure are a lot different
then they look. If the guys at "Pacific Rim" installed an Eagle engine into a
Delorean, as I understand they did, it sure must have been a heck of a
project. Quite a bit more then just some nuts and bolts stuff. I'd love to
see some pictures of it myself.

I haven't; I just put in an aftermarket stereo
For pics look in the files section of the yahoo group:

The auto eject IMHO is a good feature: it saves your tapes from unneccesary
wear; the tapehed in the deck gets magnetized over time from the tape passing it.
If you leave your cassette in this can affect the quality of your tape.
Another point is that the tape can get stuck tu the head, capstan of pinchroller
and destroy your tape in that way too.

If you DO want to figure this out: there are some scans of the craig tech-info
somewhere on the net, don't know where I got them, but there are several schematics,
PCB layouts, a parts list, alignment instructions for the Dolby system and an
exploded view so you know what goes where.

If anyone needs them and can't find these scans (maybe someone can jump in here),
I can mail them to you ZIPped, but then it's still about 1,5Mb in size.

Good luck,

List,

About a week ago I posted that I was selling my D hoping to get something
from all of those on the list that are looking to buy.  Unfortunately I have
not heard anything yet.  I know it has only been a week but you can also
post to the list if you have a question for me.  Also if anybody has any
suggestions on where I should list it.  I currently have it on
autotrader.com but it is listed as an 82' because the year numbering only
goes back to 82 on their site. I have also sent a picture to trader online
for an ad there. I have been think ing about the Detroit Freepress.

Thanks

of anywhere near Louisville, KY that works on

Subject: Fw: [doc] Fw: John Z DeLorean

Ken, List,

I have printed out and read all 26 pages.......I wish I hadn't. I don't
think it enhances Mr. DeLorean's standing or reputation one bit.

Don't get me wrong, I am possibly still DeLorean's (car and man)  biggest
fan in
the UK, but I cannot just ignore this document!

I think we should view it in context, it was submitted in court, by JZ to
defend himself and some of  his past actions.

Justice, evidence, truth, and court judgments often have nothing in common
with each other!

The British people do not  generally have a "sickness" ( being gay) and even
if we did have a monopoly on this activity, ( I'm not by the way) would that
be relevant to business judgments?

Was Sir Kenneth Cork the only person to fly regularly on Concord?  Come on
John!

Colin Chapman, was a brilliant engineer, but he was no "saint".

The British legal system is probably no better or worse than the American
one. Yes, injustices sometimes  happen, but if the "Birmingham six" had been
convicted
of terrorism in the USA they would probably have been executed long before
they could have proved their innocence.

Bobby Sands may have been a "martyr" by some, but he was seen as a convicted
IRA terrorists and by others,

Yes, the Delorean factory did employ 50% catholic workers, but initially
most catholic workers did the "unskilled" , dirty jobs in the body shop.

Everyone I spoken to who worked at the factory agreed that "politics",
(Protestant / Catholic) was left outside the works gates. All agree that the
DeLorean factory was a brilliant place to work.

As to whether the British Government under Mrs. Thatcher's leadership
conspired to sink DMC,  or whether Colin Chapman was a member of M16, I
don't suppose we will ever know for sure.

Some people may think that JZ's decision not  to testify in his drug case,
was because he would have faced some difficult questions! I personally think
the decision to acquit him was right. But I don't think the explanation he
offers in his book is the full story.

I don't think JZ is any better or worse than, say,  Chapman, Thatcher,
President Clinton,  ( or most of us ) or any of our political leaders or
industrial tycoons.
But I do think it lowers a persons dignity to start "flinging mud around" in
this way and trying to re-write History.

England and Northern Ireland is not a place I recognise as described in JZ'd
document.

Sometimes History is best left in the past!

Sorry if I've gone on a bit, but I simply could not avoid making my
comments.

Chris P Hon Sec DOC UK

And yes,  I still love the car and respect its creator. I just don't think
he's a saint!

Well, it could be electrical but not the governor. As others have suggested,
there could well be a wiring problem between governor and computer.
Another possibility is an electrical problem within the transmission,
such as a bad solenoid or a loose internal connector. These are really not
difficult problems to diagnose, so your course of action depends on how
much you trust your mechanic.

The reason I strongly recommend the light test is that it tells you with near
certainty whether the problem is inside or outside the transmission case
(assuming the outside wiring is OK). If the car downshifts and the lights stay
out, you *know* that the problem is not the governor (I admit that this is not
often the case, but it certainly happens).

Is the governor you bought New Old Stock, or one of the newer ones sold by
Grady and others? If the latter, a bad unit wouldn't be my first guess. Also,
note that if it *does* turn out to be something other than the governor, it
raises the possibility that your original governor is OK.

Hello List,
When I purchased my car the ground wire to the lambda switch(switch
located on cooling manifold) was disconnected.  When I hook up the ground
wire like it should be the frequency valve starts up and will not stop, even
when the engine is hot.  would this indicate a bad lambda sensor switch?
what else should I look at?  I have the whole intake off now so I would like

I don't have any concerns about using the list to occasionally post "special
offers" to our DeLorean community, In fact I've done it myself.

I do find it objectionable to say "its not commercial" when the site has
banners to the company that registered the domain name, offering paid
website development and hosting to DeLorean enthusiasts.

You've also set up a "DeLorean Mailing List Archives" Forum that claims "we
have captured the [DML] messages and placed them here" which implies that
you plan to duplicate the archives on your site.

I suggest that you re-think your business/personal strategy.

Ok, so I blew that one.  I relied on "Miss Information Automotive Calendar of
Events" for the information and since I have only lived in Southern California
for 50 odd years I didn't recognize Mira Mesa as being here. Dumb.

PS: Dave - since it is in your neighborhood, on the first Sunday of every
month, why not drop in and let us know how it is?

Subject: Re: lambda sensor switch

The temp sensor you are referring to tells the lambda computer that
the engine has warmed up and can now trust the 02 sensor. It will then
modulate the fequency valve. To test the temp sensor remove it, hook
up a continuity tester, and heat the sensor in some water. At some
point before 212 it should change state. If it does not then you can
assume it is defective. You cannot tell by ear what the frequency
valve is doing execpt that is doing something. To see what is going on
hook up a dwell meter to the diagnostic plug.

Subject: Probably not my governor...

Thank you all for your suggestions about my auto trans governor.
What I'm getting is that it probably isn't the part, so I'll have
some of that checked out as soon as I can.  (My old part HAD to have
been bad though, since now it usually shifts smoothly whereas before it
only barely shifted into second.)

I also want to apologize to the people at DMC Houston...sorry
if I got a little upset in e-mail but I hope you can forgive my
ignorance about this part and how it works.  (I probably shouldn't
have written an e-mail right after I got back from having the car not shift
properly.)  So I hope we're ok on that.  :)

Anyway thank you all again for your help and we'll see what I can
do.  Money is tight right now so probably not much.  :/

Richard

What about changing the shift solenoids with new shift solenoids?

The aution is closed but you have got to see it. A Delorean for $13.00
dollars (thirteen). It sounds like it is in good shape but maybe it
needs some work! It was the last item listed and I just saw it at
10:00 est.
