Subject: Old door strut and first trip

Hello List,
Well, We just bought a 3000 GT today so that means the DeLorean must
leave the garage for the winter.  It hasnt really been driven since
1991(maybe 20 around the block miles since) I bought it in 1998 non running
and partially smashed but now its all together.
I am getting it ready to take it on a hour long journey to storage until
I can have my garage space back in March.  I put all new ignition components
in it and a new fuel filter,  I changed the oil and checked the tranny fluid
and put all new gas in it.
I just bought a windshield from DMC Houston about an hour ago so the cops
wont pull me over.  I think it can make it.  I will put insurance on it for
one day next week.  I drove it for 20 minutes just now on back roads, under
40 MPH and everything went fine so I think it can make the trip.  wish me
luck!  I just bought new doors struts for it so I would like to save them if
possible. I need just ONE old door strut that maybe only holds the door 2/3
open just while its in storage for these few months.  if anyone has one they
would let go please let me know asap:)

Thank You
David

Andy,

There is a guy who sells a paint kit that takes care of the arrow thing.
When I was in Cleveland I saw the guy because he had a booth. I think the
decal kit was $10.00 and you just paint it on.

David,

You said:

"To DMC Joe the speedo is as tamperproof as any car's speedo which is to say
that it can be tampered with if anyone is so inclined".

My comment was to impress to the reader that: "It is against FEDERAL law to
tamper with a speedometer".

This is incorrect. I have titled cars in four different states. In all
cases, it plainly states on the title "Federal Law requires you to state
mileage in connection with transfer of ownership." On the back of the title
you indicate the milegage on the odometer. However, 3 out of the four times,
I was allowed to put "Exempt" in for the mileage because the vehicle was
over 12 yrs old.(this is a federal law from what I understand). Thus, if you
put EXEMPT on the title, I fail to see how anyone can contest the mileage on
the car. As long as you told them, if they accused fraud,it would be a
"he-said/she-said" situation.

I have never heard of a law of "tampering" with the odometer unless you try
to commit fraud. I.E., as long as you don't try to sell the vehicle with
fraudulent mileage, I don't see a problem.  With a simple "EXEMPT" on the
title, I fail to see how anyone can construe fraud. Maybe it is different in
New Jersey, but it has been the same for me in the four states I have bought
vehicles in(hence, it is not a federal law from what I can tell).

Just trying to help. As long as you are forthright with any future owner and
only testify to what you know about the car, you should be all right. How is
this any different than calibrating your speedo? Are you breaking the law if
you fix a non-working odometer? I could be wrong, this is my interpretation.
Is there any lawyers out there?

If any of you remember the segment on the DeLorean on TNN's Car & Driver you
may recall the part where the host says "Repairing a dent required a whole
new section."  Is this claim valid?  I thought dents and the like were
relatively easy to remove from a DeLorean provided the person is familiar
with working with stainless steel?  Please inform.

DMC toy collectors,

For your information, I found a wee model of the BMW gullwing sportscar last
weekend in Manila. It is the same scale as the diecast "Zee" DeLorean and
Mercedes gullwing models.

I too live in New Jersey.  It is not illegal to repair the speedo or service
it in any way which does not alter the vehicles mileage.  I believe Dan
stated originally he wanted the new speedo to read the same mileage as the
car had on the old unit.  This is ok and allowed.  Being in Law Enforcement,
I have read the statutes and directives pertaining to this in the Motor
Vehicle Code here in NJ (Title 39) for related instances in the past.  Any
"altering" or "tampering" is illegal.  However I dont think thats what was
intended.  Any certified shop can document the mileage for you and correct
the new unit to match.

Subject: Sensitive Torsion Bars?

Hello,
Could someone please explain to me the weird functions of the torsion bars?
I've noticed that the doors drop in cold weather and dont drop very much in
warm weather.

Is it possible to compensate in any way for the different door behaviour due
to temperature? Ive heard that you shouldnt overadjust the torsion bars...

I have new gas struts yet I would like the doors to raise fully open
regardless of cold or warm temperature. Is this possible?

Best wishes from COLD Norway,

When I get my Dakota Digital dash, I'm going to make the milage show what
the OEM odometer says.  If I'm not very accurate about it, would that be a
crime?

I think the DMC odometer and GM's of the same era are probably the same or
very similar.  I repaired one before (GM) and it was quite simple.  The
steel pin that all the numbered wheels spin on was rusted and stopped some
of them from turning.  I just took it apart, cleaned out the rust, gave it a
little oil and it was fine ever since.  Chances are, the odometer part of
the speedo is a module that can be swapped.  If not, I venture to say it
would be a piece of cake to make the numbers say whatever you want.  As far
as being tamper proof...  If you consider having to bend a few metal tabs
aside to lift a cover off...  Not so.

To my knoledge, the torsion bars are not affected by temperature.
However, the struts are.  Old struts are even more sensitive (like
mine).  But you said you have new struts.  If these are confirmed
good, and your doors will not stay up even when pushed all the way up,
you DO need a torsion bar adjustment.  If you do this yourself or have
anyone else do it, be ABSOLUTELY SURE you know EXACTLY what you are
doing.  I have performed this procedure with an original owner who had
done this many times before, and we still almost managed to shatter
the rear window, (fortunately, we just got away with a small chip).

Good Luck.

Unless your starter casing is destroyed, have it rebuilt at a local
automotive electric shop. I had mine rebuilt in Bellevue, Wa it was only
$85.00.

You could adjust the bars to make your doors come up fully in the
cold but that is NOT advisable. When it gets warmer out your doors
will "bounce" up and that is not a good thing. I am sure if you ask
DMC Joe he will have the proper answer on adjusting them or not. BTW
Cold wheather also effects the gas struts.

There is a Federal Statute dealing with Odometers.  It is at 49 USC Sections
32701 et seq.  Technically, changing the milage reading, even with no intent
to defraud, is a violation.  You may not "disconnect, reset, alter, or have
disconnected, reset, or altered, an odeometer of a motor vehicle intending
to change the milage registered by the odometer." (section 32703)  So even
if you are changing the reading to be CORRECT, you are technically violating
the statute.

I am in need of door key blanks for my mid-year 81 Delorean. One of the
former owners lost them so I now can't take my Delorean anywhere unless I
risk someone getting into it. If anyone knows what the key blank number is
that will be helpful. Also anyone who has just un-cut door keys that will be
helpful too.
