Most people Who have dealt with Don would agree that he is a very
pleasant man, However, Do be careful. Don's main concern is fixing the
problem and getting the car moving again, not always with the right
parts. We bought our first car from a man who had the car serviced there,
we had duct tape holding our Tail Light together, the radiator was some
cheap brand that rusted out in less than a year (mind you we live in
warm, and dry part of California and keep the car garaged). The gas
struts from him were shoddy, and overall, i was left of an impression of
him looking for a way to cut corners to save a buck. Which you know what,
Just isn't right for my Deloreans

My DMC (picking up this week) has problem keeping the doors all the way up. I understand there are two things involved- the counterweight/torsion bar, and the pneumatic strut.

Are there adjustment procedures for either of these two?
Any guesses as to what the problem is?

Unless you dash is beyond repair, I would recommend against using the Dash
mat. The vinyl material used in the Delorean dash must breath and the Dash
mat will prevent this from occurring. The use of a Dash mat will result in
the dash losing color and deterioration, at an accelerated rate.

Have you tried the Amazon 'out-of-print search service'? They found
out-of-print books for me as well. Very helpfull.

Congratulations on your acquisition of a DMC-12!  Do not feel alone in your
experience with the "drooping door" syndrome ... it happens to all of us
sooner or later.

First, you CAN replace the struts -- a relatively easy job -- but be sure you
get the right size and capacity.  That may be all you'll need.

Second, DO NOT attempt to tinker with the torsion bar unless you are VERY
confortable with the process.  The tension is extreme, and you can a) injure
yourself, and b) damage your car.  This can be done, but do not experiment
with it unless you are very sure of yourself.  And, as noted, the struts may
cure the problem and obviate fiddling with the torsion bars.

Good luck with the car!  And please take my comment about the torsion bars
very seriously ... I have heard of people being severely injured trying an
amateur fix for them.  If it does turn out that you need to tweak the bars,
either learn all about it first or consult with someone you trust who has
done this operation before ... and done it successfully!

And another thing you can do is add yourself to the International
DeLorean Owners Directory, a service of DMCnews. We have at least 5 owners
listed in San Diego.

Just go to http://www.dmcnews.com/directory.html and then send me an email
requesting access to the current directory (please include your VIN # so I
can verify you're in the Directory).

Every owner on the DML should be in the directory.

The closest DMC service is in Garden Grove, Orange
County.  It's Don Steger's; he only repair Deloreans
and has excellent customer service.  His number is
714-554-6794.  His customers are all over the US,
mostly in close by states (Arizona, Nevada, Utah,
Oregon,...)

Sorry- I know this is a little off subject, but I would not buy a DeLorean I can't see and touch. Over the past six months I have learned that the car might not always be as it is advertised (there is once instance in particular, but I won't go into that!). If you could go see the car before you bid that is a different story. I have learned that you can tell more by test driving a DeLorean than anything. The more DeLoreans you get out and see, the more you learn. Good luck in your search!

Subject: HELP!...idle & trans. trouble

Just bought my DeLorean, and I've noticed that the idle is set
really high.  Just took it in to try and get it smogged, and the
guy tells me that it is idleing too high to do the smog.  I've also
noticed that the automatic trans is now having more problems
shifting than I've ever noticed before.

Basically, why would the idle be set so high on this car?  Is this
and the trans. two seperate problems?  Hit me with your best shot...
what is going on here and how much is it going to cost to fix
this stuff?

This is really bummin me out here, guys (and ladies)...I've wanted
one for a long time and now it seems this thing is going to need
more work than I thought, and I (unlike alot of DeLorean owners)
am not rolling in dough.  What can I do to fix this guy up and get
him into decent running condition again?

Please help...and thanks for all the good advice so far,

Subject: More on keys

We have a LARGE supply of door keys with lights that are pre-cut for
the DeLorean.

The problem is that all of these keys are organized by key code, and
we only have a small fraction (maybe 10%) of the VINs and Key Codes
on a cross reference list.

Through investigation in the shop here in Houston, I have discovered
that a large majority of the cars have the key codes written in magic
marker underneath the door headliners. It will look something like
this:

WR5006

Generally two letters and four numbers. No other combination appears
to be a door code. Obviously if you know or think that your door
locks have been changed or re-keyed, this method won't work and
you're probably out of luck.

These keys are sold as follows:

106244 - Precut Key - $19.08
106245 - Precut Key "guts" (metal contacts, spring, button, etc) - $14.95

They are sold only as sets shown above (Qty 1 each of #106244, and
#106245), for a total of $34.03.

Please EMAIL ME DIRECTLY to either look up your VIN code or give me a
VIN code to search for the key. DO NOT CALL WARREN OR STEPHEN ON THIS
- this is a 'pet project' of mine that they have authorized me to
trial run and see if it's worth the hassle. Phone calls to Warren
and/or Stephen will result in no action being taken and you being
referred to email me.

In the Nevada and Utah areas the best shop that I've found to work on
DeLoreans is Roger's Auto Repair. He is the only mechanic in the area
I know of that was Factory trained by DeLorean Motor Company in 1981.
His mechanics know DeLoreans, and his shop services the large number
of D's here in Las Vegas. He is not DeLorean specific as he does work
on all makes and models of cars, but he gave me both an accurate ETA
for when my car would be completed, and he didn't go over the price
on the estimate that he gave me. And the work that he did was
flawless! California has it's service centers, and I believe that
Arizona has a reccomended shop in Mesa. But up here in this area I
would reccomend Roger's. The quality of both his service and his
repairs are just as good as any of the other service centers, plus he
is alot closer! I have no affiliation, I'm just a very satisfied
customer! Garden Grove is closer, but if there's a waiting list
there, Vegas may acctually be quicker. Check around first.

You need to make sure that the prior owner thought the same way you
do. Any service center, DeLorean to Acura to Ford, has two kinds of
customers. The "get me rolling - cheap" kind and the "fix it right -
money no object" kind. Some places refuse to do business with one or
the other, some don't. Do you know what kind of customer your car's
prior owner was? Was he getting it fixed up cheap to sell it (to you)?

At any rate, it may not be fair to judge this on a non-first-hand
basis.

Don's concern is keeping cars on the road , which sometimes means short cuts
if the owners are not to rich at the time. I think its unfair to judge Don
on this event as im sure you dont know all side of events. Don helped me get
my car running and yes he used parts from his 'DMC scrap yard', but he knew
I had a tight budget.

You knew about these problems,so why buy the car, if that is not right for
your Deloreans

Could always do what I did. Call up the person who has the car on auction,
and ask to see it. I looked at it this way: I'm preparing to drop several
thousand dollars on a car. What's a few hundred on air fare? I drove 3
DMCs before I settled on the one I take delivery on in a 11 days.

One local to me; nice car, but wrong color interior. One I saw on ebay;
flew out to San Francisco, crashed with a friend for a night, drove the
car around SF the next morning, crashed in SF again that night, left the
next day. That car had twin turbos on it, but seemed a bit flaky to me
(granted I don't know how a turbo DMC is /supposed/ to behave, but there
you are).  3rd one had an ad listed at the dmcnews website. Flew to see
it. Liked it. Sent the owner a certified check for the car when I got back
home.

And in 11 days, I fly down to pick my car up from DMC Houston and drive
back. Mmmm...roadtrip.....

It was a great show! We had 11 DeLoreans lined up at one point on Saturday.
On Sunday morning Dennis Gage (host of My Classic Car) met us at the gate
and asked if we had seen the local paper that morning. We made the front
page of the Local section. A shot through the open doors of a number of the
cars. Later Dennis came by with the camera crew and filmed a short
sequence. I'll have details and pics on the club web site in a day or two
(I'm editing the digital shots tonight) and will post a short note to the
list when they are there.

Rachel, I don't recall if I met you. I probably did, but didn't get your
name. Glad you enjoyed it!

Fellow DMCer's.
It was after a conversation with Don that I decided to buy my D. This after
talking to a man who took time for a 45 min conversation, knowing that I was
not having my car serviced at his shop. (I was in TN, he in CA). He took the
time to answer my questions and offered great insight into what to look for
as far as repairs, etc... This information along with his attitude towards a
stranger is why I have a Delorean now. I was lucky enough to meet him in
Cleveland and thank him in person, ( 5 years later). As far as his repairs I
have not had my car that far west yet, but I would not think twice about
using his shop. He knows what he is talking about and is willing to share
that info with anyone. Honesty in today world is to be valued, that being the
case Don is a man that can be trusted to do right by you and your car.
