Subject: Re: Destroying the DeLorean image.

[MODERATOR'S NOTE: This thread has run it's course again. I'd be happy
to post messages that focus on positive experiences with various
suppliers. Please note Dan's call for tolerance.]

I really don't want to start a war on this issue as it has gotten ugly in
the past. But I too have a "first-hand" experience that supports this claim.
I feel that this needs to be said. This happened to me.

When I was in the market for a DeLorean almost 3 years ago, I was
considering a specific car (which I did buy by the way). Well, I wrote down
the problems I saw with he car, and then I called D1. At that time, I knew
almost nothing about the car and the vendors. I was not on any list, nor was
I a member of any club. In a sense, I was virgin to the DeLorean community
:-). I needed some guidance and some advice on what to do. I saw D1's ad in
Hemmings and the 800 number was something like dmc-help. So, I figured,
great... "help"! Someone will "help" me. So I called. A man answered and I
asked for some prices on parts. He then asked me for a Vin number. I said I
didn't have it because I didn't buy the car yet. He asked me to get it for
him and call him back. I said the car was over 40 minutes away from me and I
couldn't get there anytime soon. I also questioned why a vin number was
necessary since all DeLoreans were basically the same... "aren't they?" He
said they weren't and he needed a vin to help me. I replied saying that some
parts I needed must've been standard; for example, the louvers. He yelled at
me saying to call him back when I had a vin#. Then he hung up on me. I was
mortified. I called back immediately asking for his supervisor. He replied
yelling, "I'M ED BERNSTEIN AND I'M THE OWNER OF THIS COMPANY!" A few other
unpleasant words were exchanged and then he hung up again. At that point I
seriously considered not getting into the DeLorean community. Slightly
shaken, I next phoned Bob Miller, who was also was listed in Hemmings. We
spoke of my unfortunate phone encounter and he insisted that not all
DeLorean vendors were like that. He gave me the number to PJ Grady up in NY.
Again, scared out of my witts, I phoned Grady's. A friendly female voice
answered... Debbie. I asked the same questions as I asked D1, and all of my
questions were answered by Rob himself. I was relieved. Since then, I have
continued purchasing my parts from Grady's. I'm sure if I were closer, and
was pointed to DMC Houston, I would have had a similar relationship with
them as well. But I just happened to fall where I did.

Did the experience with D1 almost cause me to not buy my DeLorean?
Absolutely. So, in essence, it's not the DML, Vixen, or anything else
that's dropping the D's value, it's the attitude from D1. I'm convinced of
that. I also think that D1 is the first place many people call because of
the advertising and easy phone number to remember. Unfortunately, the first
experience will most likely be a bad one.

Am I angry? Not really. I'm more sad that any DeLorean enthusiast would
treat another DeLorean Owner, regardless of their intentions with their car,
in a disrespectful manner. Everyone should respect each others decisions on
how they want to treat their cars, even if they don't agree with it. I have
customizations I performed on my car, and I've received mean mail about how
I'm ruining the mark. I know of others who have received similar e-mails.
Personally, I think it's ridiculous to have a car just sit in a garage and
be trailered to shows. But that's my "OPINION". It's not for me. But if it
floats someone else's boat to have that kind of car, fine! I can respect
that. Again, it's just not for ME! Just like customizing a DeLorean isn't
for THEM! We need diversity in any car community. That's what keeps it from
being boring.

Anyway, I'll conclude with this. Any business that treats any customer, or
potential customer with no respect, will eventually lose enough of it's
customers to no longer make a profit. What else do I need to say...

Enjoy your DeLorean. Hope to see you at the Fall Foliage tour!!!

William,

There are two sides to this story. As long as the DeLorean car is around
John DeLorean will never be forgotten. Yes, many DeLoreans are permanently
retired due to neglect, some parts are in short supply but the very strong
DeLorean parts network will make sure parts can be found. Our DeLorean
restoration business is at a 15 year high. The DeLorean will be around for
many more years, and although books about JZD are scarce, the dream will
live on.

BTW: Concerning your comment about the value of the cars; how many average
condition 20 year old production cars do you know of sell at 50% of their
original value. Keep in mind that low mileage excellent condition cars sell
for more than their new value.

Out of print but not unavailable.  Check ebay.  "The woods is full of them"
as the saying goes.  That's the way it is in the book business.  Ask your
local bookstore for Jay Leno's autobiography.  Two years after it was
printed, forget it.  And he's better recognized than JZD.  He's in the public
eye 5 days a week. That's just the way it is.
And MY DeLorean isn't rusting away due to lack of parts. No way, baby!   As
for value, I understand they've had better resale than a similar age and
condition Porsche 911.

You could check out ebay if you're interested in purchasing a copy. They
have at least 3 up for auction as I write this.

Just type in "Delorean" on Ebay and you'll see any of
the 5 or 6 biographies for sale on John at any given
time of the year. They are actually pretty plentiful on ebay.

Has the world forgotten about John DeLorean? Not really. While his
name may no longer be a household word, most time when you mention
him the majority of people know who you are talking about. Although
once his trial was over media attention no longer focused on him. I
don't really consider it so much a sad thing as much as I do a
natural thing. The more unfortunate aspect is that JZD never really
recieved proper credit for all his accomplishments. Numerous patents
for all the safety features both he himself created and helped to
create. From these alone it could never be known how many lives he
has helped to save. His successful business ventures, etc... But I
would consider it far worse that to finally know peace from those who
shed an ignorant light on him, JZD needed anonimity to acheve it.
I don't believe that the thousands of DeLorean cars worldwide are
slowly dying out due to anything. Yes some are being put away as we
speak, yet others are being brought out. Some will be in accidents,
and of those not all will survive. That too is only natural. Still I
would not consider this a "dying out", yet more of a DeLorean "cycle
of life". Parts availability and rust are of no serious concern right
now nor will they ever be. There are enough people who will always
believe in our cars to keep them on the road by whatever means
nessisary. Cars that are sitting right now will be returned to the
road in their own due time. And for the value of our cars? I can't
speak for everyone here, but I believe most people buy a D simply for
thier own pleasure, not for investments. If we always judged a car by
it's resale value, then practicly every car that has ever seen the
road is a failure.
A while back I was driving down the highway when I saw a young boy
looking at my car. His eyes were as wide as saucers and he had a big
smile on his face. And suddenly I realized that I was looking at me
when I was his age, and I remebered what it was like to see my first
DeLorean in the 'wild'. I may only be 22 now, but even I know there
will come a day when I can no longer give my car the attention not
that it needs, but deserves. And I take comfort in the thought that
one day that little boy or some one like him will pick up when I can
no longer continue. Someone will be there to not only keep my car on
the road, but to also pass on the legacy of the man.
While JZD and our cars may become less known, they will never,
ever be forgotten! There will always be enough dreamers and
adventureous souls who will continue to live the dream...

William,
Go to your book store and order a copy of "Glory Days" by Jim Wangers.
It's mostly about the 50s/60s muscle car era but there is quite a bit of
stuff in there about John Z.  Actually very positive, paints a much better
picture of him as an engineer and inovater than what I remember reading in
"Stainless Steel Illusion".

Suddenly, I now have a door open light even though the doors are
closed.  I disconnected all of the wires from the switchs on the left
side and still the light.  I tried the same on the right side and
still the light.

Are there any other switches that effect this light?  It is dimmer
than when the door is open, but still bright enough to be clearly
seen.  If you open a door when it is on it will get brighter.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

I know this is short notice, but we will be getting together tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 in Lakeland, exit 18 (U.S. 98) at the Steak and Shake as an informal planning meeting for a winter tech session, it appears that we will have at least 4-5 D owners plus.  If you can get away it is only a short morning drive for most anyone on the Florida list.  Bring your car if you can and if you can't please come anyway.   Randy Stribling  813.238.2399

   From: "Walter" <Whalt@xxxxxxx>
Subject: need frequency valve help

I've had an on-going cold acceleration problem in my Delorean and haven't
had much luck getting advice on how to fix it.  Maybe someone on this list
can help?

So far I have tried unplugging the electrical connection to my frequency
valve, and it makes absolutely no difference to how the engine runs.

The engine coughs, sputters, pops, and runs rough until it completely warms
up.  When I force the engine to run richer by pulling a vacuum on the
delayed side of the control pressure regulator, then the engine runs fine!
I have checked the fuel pressures and they are within specs.

My question to the group is:  How can I tell if my frequency valve is
working?  I've tried unplugging it and this makes no difference.  I've tried
unplugging the Lambda ECU and this makes no difference either.  I've put a
volt meter across the wires going to the frequency valve and measure
nothing.  I realize that a volt meter is probably the wrong tool for this,
but I don't have access to an oscilloscope.  Is there some other diagnostic
tool that is appropriate here?  I could check for flow with a fuel pressure
gauge, but I hate to take those connections apart if I don't need to.  I do
get continuity through the coil, but that won't help if nothing is going to
it.

For those of you who like to read, here is an earlier message I wrote to the
DML that never got posted.  It explains more of my symptoms:

What can cause a Delorean to hesitate during acceleration, but forcing the
control pressure regulator to make it run richer cures the problem?  I've
checked the fuel pressures, and they are all normal.  I get primary pressure
of 5.1 bar.  The control pressure regulator gives 2.9 bar with cold engine,
3.7 bar with fully warmed up engine.

Pulling a vacuum on the delay side of the control pressure regulator drops
the fuel pressure under 2 bar and cures all my problems.  But, the fuel
pressure isn't supposed to be that low.  So is this compensating for some
other problem?  And if so, what is it?

At idle, my vacuum reading is 15 inHg, but it jitters +/- 2.5 inHg.  Is this
normal?  My vacuum at 2000 rpm is 17 inHg and smoothes out.  Is this a
symptom of a stuck valve or is this normal?

This problem has been intermittent in the past and would only happen to a
cold engine.  Now it happens all the time, and it doesn't really matter if
the engine is cold any more.  Now even after the engine is warmed up, I get
hesitation, coughing, sputtering and even backfiring.

When I start the engine, it tends to stall.  Any pressure on the accelerator
makes the engine hesitate, cough, sputter and pop.  When I release the
accelerator, the engine speed actually picks up for an instant and then
drops back to a rough idle.  This keeps up until the engine is hot.  Before
I drive the car, I have to let it warm up for at least 5 minutes.  After the
engine is fully warmed up and I turn it off and let it sit for 30 minutes, I
have to let it warm up all over again before I can drive it.

orignal Keys, and all I had to do was give them my VIN number (this
was in 1982 at a Delorean Dealer)and they quickly made me up a set of
orignal keys.(I had bought a parts car and it came with no keys.)

KEY STORY

One of the Deloreans that I bought was supposed to be a Stolen
Recovered car,and typical of most stolen cars the ignition switch was
broken out with a blunt object,so as to be able to be started up with
a plier or screwdriver, but the funny thing about it was, when I
removed the Drivers seat from the car, underneath the seat(as you know
there is no room to put your arm/hand under the seat,if you drop
something under the seat) I found the ignition switch that had been
broken off under the seat, that they broke off in order to be able to
steal the Delorean,BUT THE KEY was still in the ignition switch, what
that was,was the "smoking gun"it proved that the owner or someone
was "payed"
to "steal" the car and make it look as if it was stolen when it was
recovered.(for insurance payoff)Because there is no reason to break
off a ignition switch if the key is there. The car at the time was
less than six months old from new (1981).

William,
Your knowledge of "Classic Cars"  seems a bit setchy. I  have made a living
for the last 21 years by re-chrome plating bits from other peoples "Classic
Cars". Everthing from THE Rolls Royce silver Ghost, to modern Aston Martins,
E type Jags etc. For many of these cars all sorts of parts have to be
re-manufactured at great expense to keep these cars running, which the,
often wealthy owner's happily do.
With our beloved De Loreans, most parts are readily available "of the
shelf" from people like DMC Huston, DMC Joe etc. as very modest costs.  We
are very lucky that our chosen car is so robust and  reliable. I only know
of one chassis that is rusted (in the Irish republic) and compared to say,
an E type, that repair would be a breeze.
As for values , I have personally sold 2 cars in the last year for $29, 000.
each.
Deloreans will still be around, and very sort after, for many years to come.
 Buy your books second hand.
As for the next generation of DeLorean purchases / enthusiasts, I have had a
young man, Mike, age 16, at my house for 3 hours today, looking at my
memorabilia, sitting in my car, going for a trip out ( in the rain!) and
generally enjoying himself greatly...these are the next generation of D
owners, who will ensure the car and the name John Z DeLorean, lives on long
after I am "pushing up daisy's".

As someone studying for my M.A. in history, I think a "up-to-date"
book on DeLorean would be an interesting read (but how old are
the latest books on him?)...Maybe someone should invest some time
and money in a project like this, try to collect all written material
available, try to do an oral history interview DeLorean before he
passes away, etc.  It sounds like it would be fun, but don't look at
me, I wouldn't have the time.  :)  Probably someone who is an authority on
the history of automobiles should take it up.

As far as your second comment goes, I don't think anyone goes
into having DeLorean thinking it is NOT going to be a chore taking care of
one.  I've only owned one for a few days, but I don't think you
get this car because of its great performance, or because of its
ease to deal with...you get it because you love the car, period.
Whether or not you want to and/or can do what it takes to take
care of it is another issue.  But it's not like all DeLoreans are
going to slowly crumble away, is it?

Now you've got ME worried!  :)

Subject: NC DMC FOUND!!!!!

Hello List,
About six months ago I spotted a DeLorean driving in my tiny farming town of Sanford North Carolina. Since then I have posted several notices here on the DML, trying to find out if anyone knew anything about whose car it might be. I have also asked every NC area owner I have ever talked with if they knew anything.

Well today out of sheer coincidence I took a different way home than normal, and to my astonishment, the DeLorean was sitting under a canopy at a foreign car repair shop. I completely flipped out. I flew home to get my digital camera and to write the owner a note to leave under the windshield wiper. The car appears to be an '83 with black interior and 5-speed. Unfortunately the car itself was in very poor shape. Its frame was very rusty, the interior was all cracked and faded, and the facias were peeling. But what a thrill to finally find the car I have looked so hard for! Anyways I just wanted to share my joy with the group, and to let those poeple who I had asked about the car know that I had finally found it.  -Louie Golden

I am finally in the market for a Delorean and I am finding it a
challenge to get a hold of one. If any one knows on one in the
southwest for sale please email me. I am looking for one under 15k
and I only have 3 terms. The drive train is in good condition, The
frame shows no sighs of decay "rust or damage etc." and the
body is
intact. If you know of any car which meets their requirements.

Hello everyone! I would like to take the time to thank everyone that made
an effort to the Autofest 2000. That was an experience I will never forget.
The D's were beautiful. Also to the guys that I met ( I dont know if you want
me to give your names out or not?) you were really cool. I know that I acted
like I had a half a brain but it was my first DeLorean experience. Thank you
for putting up with me!!

Found my own solution.   The courtesy light in the back was on!  This
causes the dash door open light to light up.  Interesting but true on
my car.  Only 10,500 miles so I don't think there have been any
modifications.  In any case it is solved.

Thanks,

I live just outside of San Diego and I am wondering if anyone who
reads this knows anyone in San Diego with a Delorean.  Lokking for
conversation and information on repairs in the local area.

Also, I have attended cruise nights in Escondido on Firdays and the
reactions have been incredible and I was wondering if anyone else
would like to join me.

Subject: Re: need frequency valve help

When the frequency valve is operating it will emit a loud buzzing
sound. Once it is plugged in, believe me you will notice it! The
problem itslef my not be a bad valve but rather a poor connection. I
had the exact same problem with my car. As it turns out someone had
pulled on the wires to unplug the FV rather then gripping it by the
plug. Try this: Unplug the frequency vavle and inspect how far into
the plug the wire contacts are. You may just need to push the wires
back down into the assembly. If you're not sure exactly how the wire
connection should look, unplug the cold start vavle and use it's plug
as a referance.
