Hello Wayne
The first and easiest thing to check is fan rotation. Without even
checking which way it goes just reverse the wires to the motor and
give it a try. You should get a strong blast out the vents. As for
motor speeds check the switch and the wiring. Another remote
possability is that the fan is loose on the motor shaft, this would
require you to remove the fan motor to check visably.

A few more things to check on an overheating "D"

(1) Make sure both fans are working
(2) Make sure both fans are blowing air in the correct direction
ie:into the radiator and toward the rear of the car
(3) Make sure the fans are securely attached to the fan motor shafts
(4) If you have an eary "D" the fan switch is on top of the pipe it
would be better if you turned it down like in the latter "D"'s so if
there is an air bubble by the switch it doesn't affect the operation
of it.
(5) If the timming is way off or the vacum advance isn't working
correctly it could cause it to run hot.
(6) If the fuel mixture is too lean it would run hot
(7) If the parking brake or a caliper was dragging it would run hot
(8) The radiator could be partialy obstructed
(9) A hose on the suction side of the water pump could be collapsing.

I hope I have given you a few more things to look for, a "D" in good
running condition should not run hot. Be careful, the engine is very
sturdy, it will last a long time if taken care of but it will not
tolerate being overheated very long. This is probably the single
biggest reason people have had to do engine work or even replace the
motor in a "D".

Had lunch with John DeLorean today.  To confirm, he is still trying to come
out with another car, but his interests are quite diversified and he is
getting involved with a number of ventures.  Still, as those of you who met
him here in Cleveland in June, he is still a dynamic fellow at 75 and with
the bankruptcy off his back...who knows what kind of ventures he might be
involved in and will make a valuable contribution to.

Subject: Re: Dennis Gage gave me the High Five last night

Like Mike and Brian both said, Dennis Gage (of "My Classic Car" car show
fame) really is a true car nut and he truly does have a love for the Delorean
automobile.

Our Delorean club has attended his "My Classic Car" car show in Evansville
Indiana all 3 years it's been held, and this show continues to grow larger
and larger every year. Yet each time we're at the show, Dennis takes the time
to come by and spend a little time with us to talk cars and stuff. And each
time he comes by, he has a camera crew right behind him shooting everything
that happens.  Every year he makes sure photos of our group end up somewhere
on their web site or, like Brian pointed out, on TV.  We have even talked
with him about featuring the Delorean on one of his TV shows, and it is
something he has expressed a real interest in doing. Things are in the works,
it just takes time.  Attempts were also made to get him to attend Ken's show
in Cleveland this year and again, there was definite interest on his part,
it's just their TV show is so popular, scheduling a show right now is
currently extended out 2 years into the future. Unfortunately there was not
enough lead time available for Cleveland. Discussions about Memphis in 2002
are under way.

Anyway, the "My Classic Car" car show in Evansville this year is being held
on Friday, Oct 13th thru Sunday, Oct 15th.  Once again our Delorean club
plans to attend and we would like to extend an invitation to anyone on the
list to join us for a great show and some good times. You can check things
out and register for the show at - www.myclassiccar.com - or -
www.autofest.com ---  We currently have Deloreans from Illinois, Missouri,
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and North and South Carolina
registered to attend. Everyone is welcome.

We also have a brand new motel all set up for this event in Evansville
which happens to be located right down the street from the show, thanks to
one of our club members. Matter of fact, he became a member just last year at
this show. He originally had his Delorean at the show last year to try and
sell it, he said he never did anything with it because he didn't know anyone
else with a car. We invited him to spend a little time with us on Saturday
afternoon and after a few hours, the "For Sale" sign was removed from his car
and he's been enjoying it ever since.  Bob has owned this 81 since new, and
when we first saw it in the "for sale" lot, it had less then 600 original
miles on it. Needless to say, its a very nice car that has a lot of miles
left in it for Bob to enjoy.

The motel info is:   Red Roof Inn, Evansville, Indiana - phone
812-476-3600
It is located right off Interstate 164 and the Lloyd Expressway on the
Southeast side of town.
Mention the "MidState Delorean Club" to get a group rate of $39.99 per night.

If anyone has any questions, just e-mail me.    Hope to see you there,
Marty

Is 220 when the needle is right in the middle?  If I remember
correctly, this is where it is supposed to run.  The engine is
designed to run hot.  It is possible to set the fans to come on at a
lower temp, but then the fans will not last as long.

Wayne,

Your problem may still be related to the AC mode switch. The first item to check is to insure that you have vacuum going to the mode switch. With the engine running and the fan speed at "1" (quite) rotate the mode switch through each position, you should be able to hear the various air deflection doors opening and closing as you change positions. If you don't hear any changes you are either not getting a vacuum feed to the mode switch or the switch may still be defective.

Here are the directions to Trevor Summers home. These directions were sent to me from another club member so I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Traveling from Florida take I-75 north to Atlanta as you approach downtown Atlanta take I-20 west and exit at Carrolton, I think that the exit to Carrolton is 24, but it may be 23 o4 25.   At any

rate, at exit 24 you take Rte 61 south.  Go approximately 12 miles to a
traffic light which marks the intersection of 166 bypass around Carrolton.
There is a Ford and a Nissan dealership at this intersection.

Turn left on 166 bypass and go 1.8 miles to the first traffic light which
marks the intersection of 16 east.  Turn Left or East.  There is a Police
station and Carroll Tech on either side of 16 just after you turn onto 16.

Go east 3.5 miles and turn Right on Laural Lane.  Before you get to Laurel
Lane, you will pass an EXXON station where Clem-Lowell road intersects.
Next, you pass Fang Chemical.  The next street is Laural Lane.

Turn Right on Laural Lane which is almost a U shaped road.  It crosses a
rail road track almost immediately.   Follow it nearly to the end where you
should find a Grey/Black house, the second house from the end of a
cul-de-sac.  His address is 365 Laural Lane.  phone 770-214-0025 if and when
you get lost.

Yes, 220 is in the middle, you should see a legend next to the mark that reads "220".

The normal (operating) water temperature of the engine is 194 to 205 degrees F.

If your normal operating temperature is at the 220 F mark you need to have your cooling system serviced ASAP.

Is 220 when the needle is right in the middle?  If I remember
correctly, this is where it is supposed to run.  The engine is
designed to run hot.  It is possible to set the fans to come on at a
lower temp, but then the fans will not last as long.

My cooling fans don't turn on untill a little bit below the 220 mark.
While the motor appears to run fine @ this temp, I don't know that
it's the ideal range. I've found that when the temp gets up that
high, the heat robs the engine of power. For good pickup and power,
the car performs best in the 160-190 range. Plus for the coolant
mixture that I use, 220 is only 15-20 degrees below the boiling
point. When a cooling system failure occurs there is not a safe
enough "buffer zone" to give me enough time to pull the car over to
the side of the road before the radiator cap blows. (ie: if while in
heavy traffic the cooling fans didn't turn on because of a blown
fuse, I could pull over to cool the engine down while I replaced the
fuse. And then continue down the road. But if the coolant boils over
before I can pull over, I'm then stranded no matter what because I've
dumped the majority of my water out.)
As for the the otterstat, the unit is sealed so you can't adjust it
to have the fans kick on @ different temps.

If you have not been successful with an overnight soaking of Liquid Wrench you can drill the screws out or cut the heads off with a rotary toll cutting wheel. Maybe someone on the list has another suggestion.

In any event you can order new screws and frames to replace the damaged ones.

You might have the same problem I had.  Fan blows wrong direction.  Just
check the fan on the passenger side under the dash.

Yes, if its for a daily driver your going to get small dents and other minor
problems. Plus these minor problems don't hurt the car mechanically so you
can get the car cheaper yet still have a good engine and be fine for a daily
driver.

With regards to selling the twin turbo:  I am not really sure what I have.
I bought the car sight unseen based of the sellers representations that all
was well.  Upon backing it off the transporter it was clear that that was
not exactly the case.  I drove it directly to my favorite repair shop with
the intent to diagnose and repair as required.  The engine ran OK and
because of a significant driveline "clunk" I did not get on the power much.
Initial diagnosis was a chipped tooth on the ring gear (probably having
something to do with the two nitrous tanks in the front trunk that were the
size of scuba tanks).  Also the spools were frozen on the turbos.  While the
engine is complete, it clearly has been stressed and I would not want to
warranty it.  If you are in the San Jose, Calif. area I would be willing to
show it to you.  It has been "palletized" for the last four years.  Don

A proper mixture of coolant is a 50/50 mix of clean low mineral water
with ethelyne glycol (permanent type anti-freeze). It should also
contain corrosion inhibiters and water pump lubricant. Dupont or any
name brand should be adequate. Be sure it says compatible with
aluminum, most all of the top brands do. If you have this
concentration in the system and you can hold 15 psi the boiling point
is 256 degrees F. The problem is if you lose pressure containment at
a
temperature above 212 degrees you will get an immediate flash boil
over. This is why it is so important to have a good tight system with
hoses you can trust, If ANY hose anywhere in the system fails
including the heater hoses, radiator cap etc  you will immediatly
lose
all coolant and all cooling capacity in the system. There will be no
"buffer" or margin of safety in the event of a loss of pressure
containment. You will immediatly overheat. The first sign may not
even
be a rise on the temp gauge, it won't respond fast enough. Typically
most drivers will first notice that the engine doesn'trespond to the
gas pedal. There may be some unfamiliar odors and then it may occur
to
look at the temp gauge. By then it is way past too late and all you
can do is shut the engine down and coast to the side of the road.
