Really doubt what? That DeLoreans actually exist in Kansas. My DeLorean and
I have been living happily the past three years in Wichita Kansas. Along
with at least half a dozen other owners. If you are ever going to be in the
area (anybody out there), let me know. My neighbors get a kick out of seeing
more than one DeLorean in front of my house.

Stian,
I have installed a few fuel pumps with no problem. I do know that gas
is what lubricates the pump internally. If it's run w/o gas it will
self destruct.It's an electric motor inside.. Probably just a bad
pump.

As for the oringal owners, It would be great to have at least one on the
list, and to share their wisdom. Like Curtis's (lastname?) jazzed up
delorean, who was at the show at clevan OH, I read he was the orginal owner

De Lorean Motor Company (Houston) has been researching having the
black stripes reproduced, and have had some success. I would look for
them to be available in time for the Christmas shopping season. The
primary difference in our reproduction black stripe kits is the lack
of "texture" in the black material. Though of you that have seen the
stripes up close will know what I am talking about - those that have
only seen pictures will not be able to tell them from original.
Pricing is still being worked out, and an announcement will be made
when they are ready via our email newsletter - those fo you that are

Joel,
I'm not sure I'm in sync with you; for the time being forget voltage readings. When you jump the RPM relay brown to white/purple wires does the fuel pump run? If it does and you are still not able to start the car your problem is elsewhere.
If the fuel pump runs check to see if you are getting fuel delivery to the engine.

Could you describe better what you have started with?
My first suspicion is that you are describing a situation where your car is
an '81 and has (or had) the two key system (meaning that the door key and
ignition key are different.)
The door locks on these cars are prone to jamming, and supposedly the
'service bulletin' fix for this is to replace the door locks with a new
lockset that matches the ignition key, thus turning your car into a one-key
system.
In this situation, the two-key system cars have a round hole in the door
with square notches at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. The later
produced one-key system cars have a round hole in the door with square
notches at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
When a two-key system door lock jammed and was repaired under warranty, the
dealer would remove the old lock and replace it with the one key system
lock, and in the process --- in order to make the new lock fit, the dealer
would have to cut new notches at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
The old notches at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions are then no longer
used.
My suspicion is that your doors were converted to the newer one-key system,
but whoever did this did not cut the new notches. In stead, they put the
lock in sideways making it fit the old notches.
However, one important caveat here! I am in the middle of replacing my
jammed-up two-key system locks with the one-key system. I'm really not sure
where the new notch locations are supposed to be. I'm only parroting back
what I understood Rob Grady to tell me over the phone. So I may be
inaccurate about the notch locations.
I will know the rest of the story when my new locks arrive. Where are they
Rob? :)

The initial DeLorean Motor Cars LTD retained and contracted with the very
best that the automotive industry had to offer. DeLorean hired leading firms
with professional automotive engineers, designers with countless years of
professional experience. The Bricklin car on the other hand is an interesting
concept.
Herb Grasse was an antique literature dealer in Cave Creek Arizona. He
was also one of Malcolm Bricklin' right hand men and chief designer of the
Bricklin automobile. When I purchased a substantial amount of literature and
books from him, he said that his Bricklin involvement led him to John
DeLorean in 1974-1975 just at the time DMC was formed.
Evidently, John DeLorean had contacted him to design a sketch of the
DeLorean Safety Vehicle concept....Herb had prepared a slide show, and
sketched design elements of John DeLoreans' concept....DeLorean was not
impressed with the Bricklin Vehicle, company, or the concept and design that
the young designer sketched.
The winner of the bid and designer of the DeLorean was Giugiaro of
ItalDesign. ItaLDesign is one of the most renown industrial design studios
specializing in primarily automotive and industrial design. Many of the
automotive upper echelon in the business have contracted ItalDesign to sketch
their cars, like Lexus GS 400, Lotus, Bugatti, DeTomaso Mangusta, and
DeLorean.

I have a question about this overheating thread. My DeLorean has never
overheated, but the fans don't come on until the temperature gauge is almost
to the 220 degrees mark. It's never gone above that.
Living in South Carolina, it gets very hot here in the summer. It's not
unusual driving in stop and go town trafic with the A/C running for the gauge
to stay near the 220 mark. Is this ok? I've bled the system, but that
shouldn't be a problem since the fans are running because the A/C is on.
I've installed the fan fail bypass, so that's not a problem either.

I'm glad Mike mentioned MCC and Dennis Gage on this mailing list. I'm a
member of Club MCC and have attended their Autofest Nationals the past two
years. It seems Dennis is a fan of the DeLorean; in fact, he did an
interview with Lincoln Nation at the first Autofest back in 1997. It's a
good spot on our cars if you ever get to see it.
A while back, I suggested that the DOA ask Dennis to film a show at the St.
Louis Expo since it was so close to Evansville, Indiana, the home of Club
MCC. I was told that MCC required several thousand dollars to do the show.
Some of you may have read about this in the last issue of DeLorean World.
I'm very interested to find out what this group in Cleveland had to pay. If
it's reasonable, I think it would be worth pursuing for the Graceland show in
2002. It would give us a chance to show off our cars, and if JZD comes back,
a chance for people to see that he is free and not in prison. The show also
has a segment called Classic Designers and Engineers, and it would be great
to have JZD's work highlighted in this segment as well. Let us know what you
find out Mike; I'm quite interested.

I dont know how interested anyone would be in this but 3M makes a material
called Scotchlite that is pretty thick and looks similar in shade to the
original striping. The only difference is this stuff lights up like a mirror
at night when you shine your headlights on it.
This stuff is commonly used on emergency vehicles. We have a long 2 foot
wide stripe on our rescue unit at the firehouse. Looks like a regular sport
stripe by day, but high visibility by night.
Any custom design is readilly available as every police dept and fire dept
in the country has there own design. You can send your design specs in and
they will send your design back in a couple weeks w/directions on how to
apply.
I'm not gonna do any free ads for the company, but if you are intersted let
me know privatly I'll send you the link.

This could be way off, but something very similar happened to mine. If you have ever looked at the configuration of the fuel pump/boot area also sits directly below a water drain in the body. My situation was this, and it's possible it's also yours. The rubber cap on top of the fuel pump boot which keeps water away from the pump itself is very, very, very hard to get back on top correcly, and they had not only left the boot cap too high off of the boot, but they had also not seated the pump itself far enough into the boot, so when it rained, water got into my fuel system, causing very similar problems. Seeing as they washed it before you picked it up, maybe you should check this out.

How old were you when you get the D(maybe how old are you now?)
I think the reason higher mileage cars are in better condition is by driving
it often you can identify more problems(like factory problems) that you cant
identify when its just sitting in the garage.

My first suspicion is that you are describing a situation where your car is
an '81 and has (or had) the two key system (meaning that the door key and
ignition key are different.)
The door locks on these cars are prone to jamming, and supposedly the
'service bulletin' fix for this is to replace the door locks with a new
lockset that matches the ignition key, thus turning your car into a one-key
system.
In this situation, the two-key system cars have a round hole in the door
with square notches at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. The later
produced one-key system cars have a round hole in the door with square
notches at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
When a two-key system door lock jammed and was repaired under warranty, the
dealer would remove the old lock and replace it with the one key system
lock, and in the process --- in order to make the new lock fit, the dealer
would have to cut new notches at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
The old notches at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions are then no longer
used.
My suspicion is that your doors were converted to the newer one-key system,
but whoever did this did not cut the new notches. In stead, they put the
lock in sideways making it fit the old notches.
However, one important caveat here! I am in the middle of replacing my
jammed-up two-key system locks with the one-key system. I'm really not sure
where the new notch locations are supposed to be. I'm only parroting back
what I understood Rob Grady to tell me over the phone. So I may be
inaccurate about the notch locations.
I will know the rest of the story when my new locks arrive. Where are they
Rob? :)

Delorean Guru's,
I have been searching for a delorean for about a year. I
live in Michigan. I've passed serveral chances to buy a delorean,
just out of being picky about 5speed, grey, thin stripe, and price.
I
am "looking" at a delorean (emailed pics), that fits the bill. The
problem... It has been stored continously since 1989, every thing
that
is not stainless is rusted (it was outside for a number of years I
think). The car has 3,000miles on it, but the seats (at least the
driver seat, is very cracked, probably sun damage. the dashboard and
fascias (warped) are sun scorched. The engine is very rusted looking
and the frame was deemed "unsafe" because of extensive rust damage to
the front part of frame (1989). The owner who is selling it bought
it
in this condition a number of years ago, he bought a "rolling chasis"
from a delorean that had a interior fire. he never had time to work
on the car and is now selling the delorean and the 2nd frame. Is
this
sad delorean a lost cause? what price range do you think I should ask
for if I do want to purchase it? I have the space to re-build the
car
and allthough I'm not a mechanic I can handle big projects. what are
the implicataions of a frame transfer? can the windshields be taken
out without cracking? is the rust I see probably mostly cosmetic or
evidence of much worse damage to internal engine components? is there
any chance that the old frame could be structuraly inforced without
removeing the car from it (I say this because the front is where the
extensive damage seems to be). alot of questions!! thanks so much in
advance, this list is the largest knowledge base for delorean owners
and wana-be owners like myself and I truly appreciate it! Thanks!

Would it be possible for your "door session" to be videotaped & offered for sale to list members??? I, for one, would be willing to pay a reasonable price for a tape of reasonable quality, that showed the intracacies of the door innards, what to watch for, how to avoid doing more damage than what has
failed/become maladjusted, etc.

BTTF has been an influence for a few people in buying a DeLorean. But
the majority of people that I have met that want one got their first
look @ one while it was on display in a museum or on the road.
Usually the one that was here @ the Imperial Palace auto colection,
or the Peterson Automotive Museum in LA. And some folks even remember
them rotating on display in the casinos as slot prizes! I think the
very first time I saw a DeLorean, it was on display in the basement
of the Museum of Science and Industry @ Exposition Park in Los
Angeles around 17-18 years ago.
Plus, I'd have to say the biggest influence for myself to buy a D
was/is my parents! My parents first saw the D when it was displayed
durring the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Both fell in love with the
car at first sight, but at the time the car was half the cost of a
house they were looking at. Long story short, they passed on buying
the car at the time, but ended up passing the passion for the car on
to me!
As for original owners, I agree that it would be great if they could
share things with us such as first time buying expieriences,
impressions, etc... When I purchased my car, the original owner had
passed away quite a few years earlier. I have some sketchy details
about why he purchased the car, but nothing such as personal
expierences with it. I don't ever plan on selling my car, but I also
know that I can't take it with me, which is why I'm documenting
everything now for when it's passed down...
