DeLorean Owners: We Can't Drive
Fifty-Five?
Patti and I have reviewed the notes from
the Driving Tour dry run, and one
comment seems to come up over and over:
"Segment (various) of the tape is too
long! We got to the turn (various)
seconds before the tape did!"
This surprised us. We prepared the tape
assuming everyone would drive about 5
mph over the speed limit. We warned
participants over and over not to speed
(the route passes through at least five
speed traps). Yet for that comment to
appear so often, most participants must
have been speeding by 10-20 mph.
Are all DeLorean drivers leadfoots? Do
we need therapy? Take this poll to
find out!
o My speedo works and I can keep my speed under contro. (when I choose
to do so.)
o My speedo works, so I *know* that I drive the way Chuck Yeager flies.
(If you don't like it, get yourself a Yugo.)
o My speedo does not work. (I judge my speed by the Doppler shift from
my headlights.)
o My speedo does not work, but even if it did I would not read it. (My
DeLorean used to be painted, but it burned off one day during re-entry.)
o Well, in my wife's minivan I drive like Chester Milktoast. (When I'm
in my DeLorean I become Richard Petty.)

Oops - I really did it this time. I tried to correct a minor typo in

The Rolls Royce and Bentley Owners of the Greater Washington, DC area
would like to know if the DMC owners would like to get to gather for a
"British Evening"
Includes lunch and social evening.
The Lotus car association would like to invite area DeLorean Owners to
another future event as well.
Event is in development.
In addition, I am planning a showing of a private tour of the infamous
Tucker
car warehouse. A fellow collector/car enthusiast has painstakingly
restored
three factory Tuckers and all related memorabilia. The warehouse includes
the
original test chassis, tons of preserved memorabilia, and the development
of
the Franklin Helicopter engines in various stages of development that were
retrofitted for the Tucker Automobile.
Due to the vastness and the ability to control a small group, he has asked
me
to invite a limited number of interested individuals to see his
collection.

You want it, you got it. We ran the route with a GPS receiver and took
down the
waypoints of every turn. Tour participants may now request a version of
the
directions with longitude and latitude instead of our sample stopwatch
readings. Please ask for this version at departure.
BTW we used the GPS system to confirm that our speeds were correct.
In a week or so we will upload the final version of the directions into
the
eGroups vault. It will be in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, and it
will
include both stopwatch readings and waypoints. Anyone who has a
programmable
GPS system can enter all the data and be prepared to take the tour in 21st
century style!

Other signs of wear that may indicate an unreliable odometer:
Wear on the steering wheel: Look for a difference in leather wear where
it you would likely hold the wheel (10&2 oclock).
Oil from our hands will cause a different sheen to build up over time.
Arm rest wear: Same as above - the center console will have a wear pattern
where an arm has been resting. Less wear,
less use. Same with door pulls. Anything leather that is touched by skin
will absorb oil over time and change color. (darker)
Scuffing on the oil plug. More scuffing, more times it has been changed.

Any wreck which is bad enough to cause suspension damage will be very
difficult to repair properly. It is likely that the car has frame damage
also, and even if it doesn't, repairing suspension is not especially easy.
If I were you, I would pass on the car and save up for one that is already
drivable and has only the usual problems. If you buy the car from someone
that doesn't know much about it, or really needs to sell it, you might get
a good deal!

it's really better to save it and spend it in the most economical way.

In regard to the 6 speed gearbox question. Yes, although 0.1 second
improvement at 0-60 is a little subtle, the whole point of the sixth gear
would allow much quieter cruising at higher speeds such as 80plus on the
motor/highway.

Ok, number one. Nobody has even yet made a 7-speed. The most gears in
any
car is 6. Second of all the gear ratios would have to be very close
together, that means you would have to shift gears very frequently, like
every 5 mph intervals.
Third there was a test done with a 2000 Mazda Miata 5 & 6-speeds, and the
6
speed accelerated 0-60 in 0.1 seconds faster, who cares about 0.1 seconds.
Fourth, once I sat in a Porsche 911 with a 6-speed with an H shift pattern
with reverse located all the way to the left and up, the other 6 gears
were
just like the D's 5-speed + 6th right below 5th gear, well when I tried to
shift into 1st I kept on accidentally shifting into reverse. I don't mean
to
discourage you or to sound like this is a dumb idea, but it would be
interesting to try.
