Most likely the battery.

Take it out of your car and take it down to your favorite auto store and
have them do a load test on it. If bad, then replace it. Otherwise you
can check your alternator.

First, thanks to the kind folks who suggested ways people can support the
list and the 'zine. I didn't solicit their comments, so it's nice to know
that people are aware of the effort and expense that goes into the
DML/zine.

The list exists for all DeLorean owners and enthusiasts, from the
teenager that wants one to the seventy year old who just got one. You
don't have to be in a club to read the list or read the zine. There has
been some casual talk over the years of turning the DeLorean Mailing List
into an official "club". Right now I am against that idea - we have a
good level of participation, and a wide base of subscribers. The clubs
that exist do a good job at what they do, and instead of hoping that they
will do more, I'm using the list and the 'zine to fill the voids they
leave. John DeLorean called it playing between the keys on the keyboard,
I believe.

As I mentioned earlier, It's a great weight off my shoulders to have the
help of Mike, Patti, Dave, Greg, Travis, Knut and Marla. They give of
their time, which is far more valuable than I feel right in asking for.
Being "behind the scenes", they get none of the accolades, either.

As far as monetary support, it is my eventual goal that the list be
self-supporting. I won't turn away any support, and I promise that any
funds received will go to keeping the list running. I would encourage the
readers of the DeLorean Mailing List to purchase any of the "stuff" that
is available from the web page. In my opinion, it's all "neat", and most
of it is even collectible. And, as De alluded to, the items are not
priced at cost, but all profits go back in to the list server, the web
server, the zine and the DOD.

Any questions, please feel free to email me...

When I read the articles about the four speed DeLorean, it reminded of a
little something I saw a while ago in a Car book which had a chapter on
DeLoreans. Unfortunatly I can't remember the name of the book, But it
had a picture of the interior from the driver's point of view.  It was a
manual transmission but there were only two pedals, the gas and brakes,
no clutch. Okay I've heard of cars with a manual tranny and no clutch
but have never heard of a DeLorean like that. Anyone recognize a picture
with this description or have any comments on it???

I start college in less than two weeks, and the DeLorean must absolutely,
positively be gone by then.  So I've dropped the price as absolutely far
down as it can go.

$13,500.  FIRM.

I was origninally asking $18,500, and I figure it's worth about that, but
it's gotta go, no kidding, it's crunch time here.

Car is a late '81, no gas flap but has hood lines.  #4761.  Grey int, auto
trans.  Needs left side exhaust manifold gasket but otherwise mechanically
sound.  Has battery cutoff switch.  43k orig. miles.  Lots of newer stuff-
AC refurbished, belts, hoses, all the major stuff has been done outside of
the gasket- fix that and it's one heckuva nice ride- stainless is PERFECT-
not a dent anywhere.  Interior is a little worn- driver's seat needs
recovering, so does center headliner.  I have complete service history for
the car on paper, including a photocopy of the original window sticker.

I love the car dearly, but I cannot afford college unless I sell it
pronto.
And that could be very, very bad.  PLEASE!  Someone on the list help me
out
here!

I have pictures I can send.

I cannot agree more with all the sentiment about the DML. There
wouldn't have been any way I would have bought a DeLorean without
DML, 'zine', and all the on-line information that has grown up around
the DML. My car for one was saved from being a terminal 'garage
queen' because of this list. It encourages prospective and current
owners to get those cars out of mothballs and get them back on the
road where they belong.

I second the $3 idea. To take this a bit farther, how about a DML
design t-shirt? Usually it costs $3-$6 to make a shirt. Tack on
an extra $3 and you have a constant supply of money and a wearable
advertisement for the List. I also never make a suggestion with
offering to help. I do design work and I have a really good t-shirt
guy.

I do a lot of work with freon and other chemicals for other applications
not friendly to the enviroment.

It is generally suggested to stay with whatever system you have and in
this
case its R12.  It is still readily available and will be for far into the
forseable future.  Since they recapture it you get a credit if you need to
drain the system and only pay for what you need. (again don't use the
modified
R12's as mentioned they can do more harm than good.  They do not
lubricate as
well.

Sorry Richard but when its gone its gone and you need to buy more.
Staying
with the R12 is best for the DeLorean and as you have heard from numerous
others it is not as efficient.  If you do it right this is a repair that
needs
to be done aboaut once every six years or so and when you do it take the
time
to replace all the o-rings/seals while its apart.
Good luck

Subject: DML: Wrecked D for sale

Over the weekend, I had a chance to take a look at a wrecked D, (VIN
#1205 - Automatic, black int., gas flap) that was mentioned by Steven
Rice on the List several days ago.
The car has extensive front end damage and right side damage all
the way down the side of the car. According to the owner, he hit
another car head-on at 55 mph. The driver was not hurt, as the car
absorbed the impact. I was very  impressed at the crash-worthiness
of the Delorean.  The frame had been crushed in about 2 feet, and had
seemingly buckled underneath, and the dashboard seems to have been
bowed upwards in the middle. Amazingly though, the windshield did not
even get a crack.
Unfortunately, the car has sat out in the weather for a year, and
because of the extensive damage, is a total loss. The only straight
body panels are the left door (it won't open, however), the left rear
quarter panel, and the t-roof section.  The car looked like it had
been well maintained before the wreck and the owner showed me
receipts for thousands of dollars of work from DMC Houston. I was
unable to bring a camera with me to take photos, but I made a list of
everything I think is salvageable off of the car. I can post it up
here if you folks want, or you can just email me separately. Stephen
Wynne told the guy that the car is worth $3500 in it's current state
(that was based on a description over the phone to Stephen.) It is
located way out in the countryside about 30 minutes outside of Baton
Rouge, LA. I can give the owners name and number to whomever is
interested, however, the owner is ONLY interested in selling the
whole care as opposed to parting it out. It would have to be removed
on a flatbed tow truck, as it will not even roll.
I had thought about buying the car myself and parting it out, but
only if I could recoup my costs quickly. If you are interested in any
part of this car, let me know and I can tell you whether or not I
think the part is salvageable.

I have had experience with POR-15.  I have used it to fix a rusting
floorpan.  I can't say enough good stuff about this product.  It creates a
very strong chemical bond between the metal and the paint.  It prevents
any
further deterioration and can fix holes as large as a softball (with some
help from their fiberglass/putty arrangement).  It is also VERY easy to
use.
(Just don't forget those gloves, as the stuff will stick with you FOREVER
if
you let it get on you!)

And on another note, I am back after a little time away from the mailing
list.  I didn't have as much time to devote to it, so I left for a while.
However, I am back and I hope to get my own D.

Ken has a great idea (we bicyclists are very creative!).

I have DMC T-shirts from as far back as the early 80's.  Some have been
worn and washed so often you really hve to look closely to know just what
is on the shirt.  So, a fresh DML shirt - perhaps linking the DMC to the
NET would be awesome.  I'm in for a couple if it ever comes to pass.

Would the book be "The Ultimate Classic Car Book" by Quentin Willson, a
British publication ... white cover with the front of a red Ferrari plus
other smaller car images on it? Theres a photo similar to what you
describe, in the DeLorean double page (Page 88), but I think the bottom
arm of the steering wheel makes it look as if the clutch and brake are
one.

Incidentally this article isn't so positive for the DMC, concluding by
saying ... "After the initial novelty died down, word spread that
DeLoreans were dogs and sales completely evaporated." ..... we know
better!!!

I like Kens idea, I would gladly buy a tee shirt to support the list.
How about the DeLorean photo that James has sold in poster form, with
some graphics with the site address.  I would be willing to pay for a
premium quality shirt with a pocket.  Haynes Beefy Tee comes to mind.  I
wear tee shirts most of the time, so I am always looking for a new one.

I have a 170MPH spedo, and I am not all that happy with it.  I am not
sure how accurate it is, but in general, when you have such a large
scale, the accuracy is destroyed.

I have never had the car over 140, and doubt I ever will...  There is
simply no need for a 170Mph speedometer!

I am not in a rush to pull apart my dashboard to replace it, so I am
going to wait on the modification.

It may be a good idea for DMC, and/or PJ grady to offer the 140 mph
option, this way we can also have the 'Factory Quality Job'.  Could the
gears from the canadian spedo be duplicated?  I am not a expert on this,
but I thought the "recalibration" of the spedo was to change the gear in
it.  I guess you could also change the gear in the transmission, but
that would also effect accuracy, no?

I have three questions:
1- My original gas door lifts gave up about a year ago. I got new ones
and they worked wonders, the doors shot up. One month later the doors
sag more than the old ones did. I called and asked about this and they
said that they had settled and I need to adjust my bars. I want some
input on this because the doors have not really been used that much
(793mi, never been licensed for road).

2- I got the car out of storage and it seem to have 4 pitted spots the
size of dime on the lower rear panel. Even some scale in the middle of
each spot. Please, what could cause, how to stop, how to fix (how much
for new panel?).

3- How do you fix a sticking fuel distributor

Thanx to all I am on alot of list and this is by far the best!

Marty can answer it better than I (and I hope he will), but the actual
calibration is not done with gears on the DeLorean (GM) speedo. One
magnet is attached to the speedo cable that goes in tot he back of the
speedo, and there are magnets in the piece that is attached to the actual
needle. The resistance of these two magnets rotating if what makes the
needle show the speed. Re-calibration by speedo shop sets the resistance
of the magnets to match the new face.

Chip,
When your wipers come on what mode are they in?, intermittent, low speed
or
high speed. Your dash lights not working is probably due to a defective or
improperly connected dimmer control. Remove your shifter boot plate to
access the under side of your dimmer control, check to see that the two
red
/ orange wires are connected to the two right hand terminals of the dimmer
switch, than check to be sure you have 12v at this point when the parking
or head lights are switched on. Add a jumper wire to the red white wire,
the dash lights should come on. If this is the case you can either leave
the jumper in place or replace the dimmer control.
Door struts are available from most of the DeLorean parts suppliers,
you'll pay $45 to $55 per unit.

Subject: DML: Re: Door lifts and body RUST

Charles,
The torsion bars should not change torquing power, they are specified for
50,000 cycles without change in strength, the gas struts however do change
in strength. They are very affected by temperature. The struts lifting
capacity can change as much as 20% with a 30 degree F temperature range.
For example, lets say it is winter and you have a heated garage, you
install brand new struts and than adjust the torsion bar so that the doors
would rise gently and stop without a bounce. Next you drive your car to go
out for dinner, your DeLorean sits outside in freezing temperatures, when
you return to the car and open the door you find that  the door does not
completely open.
We always adjust torsion bars with new struts installed and depending on
the temperature at the time we adjust for a happy medium between hot and
cold. Additionally the gas struts effectiveness reduces with time.
2. If someone used steel wool or a Brillo type pad steel powder lodged in
the grain pattern will rust and leave brown spots on the stainless steel.
Try rubbing these spots out with a scotch brite pad. If your not
successful
your stainless may have suffered acid damage, highly unlikely but
possible.
If the acid only effected the surface of the stainless the damage can be
easily rubbed out.
3. What makes you think that you have a sticky fuel distributor?

Subject: DML: Shifter Pivot Bolt

To all DML,

For all of you who have manual transmission in your car, I would suggest
you
to have an inspection of the PIVOT BOLT that is on mounted on the chassis.

I found out about this bolt in a very unpleasant way.  Last Saturday,
August
15 about 12 noon I was set to go to work when manual stick handle had no
response at all.  Surprising enough the bolt sheared off in first gear.
After
much ado and movement with the non responsive stick, I was able to get it
to
second gear finally.

I called PJ Grady hoping to get some info or get my Delorean to his shop
that
Saturday mid afternoon.  He did not answer so I took a chance, and drove
the
DeLorean to his shop some 65 miles from where I was in Brooklyn, New
York.

I drove the Delorean in second gear all the way to PJ Grady at 4,500 to
5000
RPM and traveling at 45 to 50 MPH.  What roar from the engine for 2 1/2
hours!
Anyway, when I got there, Rob from PJ Grady just pull into the drive way
right
after I did.  He was taken back by my unannounced appointment.  I told
him the
situation and he IMMEDIATELY jack up the car replaced the broken bolt and
gave
me an extra one for a spare -- all this in less then 20 minutes -- and Rob
didn't even charged me one red cent.

I guess he felt sorry for me since I had MANY unusual mishap with my
Delorean
since my 2 1/2 years ownership.  Four months ago I had the accelerator
cable
break while I was down in Philly, Penna. for the Midatlantic Deloreans
Club
meeting.  I guess many of the mishaps are from the constant daily use of
my
DeLorean.  There is a tremendous amount of wear and tear from daily use.

The whole story is to check your shift pivot bolt, the accelerator cables
and,
etc.  The sad thing is that they are so cheap and easy to replace and if
they
brake, you get stuck heavy time, for simple things!

Greg, you did mention that it is worth $3,500 in its current condition.
Is the man still asking $2,500 for it or did he get gready and go up on
the price?

On my car the rear springs had been cut and moved to the front. The
front springs had not been cut and moved to the rear.

This is not desireable and I recently put it back the way it was
except that I shortened the fronts so the car looks level. Never did
like the nose high look.

Joe,
I get the idea about the R134.  I was looking for a way to leak test the
system without using more R12.  At $50.00 a pound that could get real
expensive.  By the time I figured out what was happening with the leak,
the
system was empty so I couldn't tell where the leak was.  I imagine that
about the best solution will be to put a vacuum pump on the system.  I'll
have to evacuate it anyway.  Any other suggestions are welcome (as long as
they are of reasonable cost).

Thanks,

Subject: DML: Roof Light + Door Switch

Another couple of quick questions....

1.  How do you remove the diffuser / switch (lens) from the roof light so
that
you can replace the bulb.  I tried to snap it out of place as more or less
illustrated in the parts index but was afraid to break it.  What's the
proper
procedure for removing the diffuser switch to access the  bulb.

2.  The driver side has two door switches / buttons  one controls the door
warning lights and turns on the interior lights (that would be the second
switch).  What does the first switch do and when I bought the car it was
disconnected.  There are two wires one purple with a blue stripe and the
other
purple with a white stripe, both have terminals for snapping into the
switch
but should I attach the cables or should it be left disconnected.  What
does
this do anyways????

Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem a few years back. I installed a new bolt, and
then had a problem with it backing out of the captive nut. The Service
manual says that no loctite should be used, but thats what I ended up
using to cure it.

Subject: DML: Parts needed

Hello everyone:
I'm in need of a couple parts and I've noticed several postings of
cars being parted out recently, so I thought I'd give this a shot and
see if any of you can help out BEFORE I break down and order new stuff.
I need the front air dam (called a Spoiler in the parts manual) It's
part number is 100632. I would take one that has some work to do on it,
cracks that can be patched etc., No chunks out of it though (I've got
one of those already!). I could also use the guard grill (part # 101628)
which should be attached to the air dam. Finally, I'm looking for one
Louvre Panel Grill (Part# 105516). You can e-mail me with a response and
let's see if we can make a deal! Thanks again for all the great
correspondence going on here.
I can't leave this posting without offering another (oh great) little
bit about the value of this list. I owned my first Delorean
(#3817..anyone know where it is today?) about 7 or 8 years ago (bank
forced me to sell cause they wanted their money...greedy bas..., sorry!)
and although I probably had (and still have) one of the best
Delorean-factory-trained mechanics in the midwest, I still felt "alone"
with that car. This time around I feel very confident and definitely not
so "alone". Thanks DMC news! De Miller, Kansas City.

Just a couple of quick "refinishing" questions for everyone:

After 15 years of being garaged the elements are starting to wear on my =

Now it is time for a few more touchups!  The rear louvers have lost =

Makes one of those obnoxious buzzers go off when the door is open and
the key is in the ignition. Your choice. Mine is used by the

I was looking around through the pictures from the show in Cincinatti
and finally noticed how shiny and new everybodys rims looked. mine are
in excellent shape but i think they need to be cleaned. bad. cause
they're dark! does anybody know the best way to clean these things?

I also was working ona  problem with my dash lights which i noticed
didn't work the first day i drove it in the dark.  One of my letters
said that it might be the little circular knob next to the clock. they
said that maybe it was broken and it would be so if it did 360's. nope.
looks fine to me.  but at the same time i noticed that the clock wasn't
on either and i put that next to another letter that suggested a fuse
problem since both of them are hooked into the same fuse. checked that.
its a 10 amp that looks fine. im all out of ideas. i guess i could look
at the lights in the dash? can anybody explain in detail how i would go
about doing that? any other ideas? im really nervous working on this
car? should i just have a pro do it? how much would something like that
cost cause im using a lighter right now to check my speed. its not hard
or that much of an inconvience but i would like them to work if they
were designed to. any help there is appreciated.

one last thing. i was given a bunch of magizines when i bought my DMC
and two of them i already had. i was just curious on how much these
things are worth. on the market or to anybody. one is the Nov 8, 1982
issue of People with JZD and his family on the cover. the other is the
Nov 1, 1982 issue of time with JZD on the cover. thanx for all your
guy'ez help.

I would also like to say thanx for everybodys quick response's to my
last letter. i really enjoy this list and now i have somthing to put it

Quick note on the 170 MPH Speedo conversions.  Mine was done in Houston
by DMC and has proved to be quite accurate.  On my 5,000 mile trip last
May, I checked it over a five mile course, trying to maintain 80 MPH the
whole way, and the timed milage worked out to 79.6 MPH.  Not too bad I
don't think.  Perhaps Chris should have considered having his
recalibrated before he sold it.  It's simply a matter of calibration of
the unit, and there should be nothing inherently wrong with the
conversion procedure.

I had the same problem 2 years ago... I had the car towed home, and rob
sent me a new bolt..

I dont know what you would look for to "inspect" this...  The bolt is
cheap, might as well just replace it!

This is not a standard off the shelf bolt, it has a shoulder that is the
exact size needed to allow the works to move correctly, so it requies
the proper bolt.  Waiting for the bolt to arrive from PJgrady, I did
replace mine with a hardware store bolt, but I left it loose, and used
some washers to get the spacing correct.
