You can make your D sound like that simply by removing the muffler. (and
maybe the catalytic converter) Those over here with the re-piped exhaust
manifolds *apparently* sound like the car(s) in the film(s).

Another point,
I'm no wiz on movie making but almost everysound you hear in a movie
is created on a sound stage. The people who create these sounds are
called folly artist or something like that. Anyway, my point is that
the sound used for the D in the BTTF movies most likely is something
else other than the D's engine. For example, sound for the tornadoes in
Twister was a colaboration of animal sounds amongst other sounds to make
that sound. People walking, their feet noise happens in post
production. Another more related example is the Ford "POS" (i'm quoting
here it is not actually a Piece Of S#!*) in the movie Men In Black.
That has an incredible (added/enhanced/whatever) rumble as it drives up.

Subject: DML: BTTF Items
I just thought of an idea on how we can get BTTF stuff. The only
good place I know of to get BTTF items is the BTTF store in Universal.
The idea is, next time I or someone else is out there, I could take
orders for people that want a BTTF item but don't have the time to goto
universal themselves. Maybe if someone lives out near one of the
universal theme parks they could go out and buy the stuff.
I just thought this would be a neat idea for those of you that want
stuff but haven't the time to go all the way out to universal. Please
email me if you think you might be interested.

I recently had my relay jumper device fail because of a bad crimp, so
I have spent a lot of time recently with the electrical part of the
cooling system while trying to locate the trouble. Let me see if I can
make an ASCII diagram of the relay connector:

Facing the electrical access area from the passenger seat, you need to
have a double set of FUSED jumpers that run from the power input of
the relay at the bottom connector to each of the sockets on the left
and right sides. Do NOT put anything in the upper center connector or
you'll ground out the whole car. Buy 2 in-line automotive 20 amp fuses
and crimp a blue spade lug onto one end of each fuse wire. Then solder
the other 2 fuse wires together after you have thinned down number of
strands in each wire a bit. Then crimp the soldered connection into a
yellow spade lug. Since these crimp connectors are in themselves a
point of failure, you may want to solder the wires and crimp them on
all the lugs. That's how mine failed. The wires were too big to both
fit into the yellow connector so someone just jammed the wires into
the connector and did a poor crimp. All the strands from both wires
are too big to fit the Yellow spade lug (anyone ever seen a next size
up from 'yellow'?). If you want to know when your fans are running,
solder on 1 more wire and a spade connector from the power input of
the relay and plug it into the connector just above the power input
lug. Then, every time the fans come on, the 'Cooling Fan Fail'
light will come on. Just use some black tape to cover the word
'Fail'.
What's best is to have the 'Fanzilla' kit. It's amazing how much of a
load those 2 fans cause when they come on. Being rather broke at the
moment and needing to spend my DeLorean money on a new cooling bottle,
and tires ASAP, I have not been able to buy one myself. Does anyone
know if the construction of one of these devices was covered at one
time?

I am sixteen now, but when I was little, the first Hot Wheels car that I got
was one of the Hot Wheels DeLoreans. It was a red one with the number 10 on
it. Unfortunately, it is now pretty scratched up. I am pretty sure that it
was modeled after the DeLorean prototype, because it has no louvre, and
looks just like the shape in pictures I've seen.

i need help settling an arguement between a friend and myself. my
friend is always driving around town in his d with the doors up. i
keep telling him to close the doors because of the lack of side impact
protection and scrapes from trees. i also tell him that driving with
the doors up ruins the torsion bars. he says im full of hogwash. who's
right? how do i convince him to close the doors?

I fixed my sticky steering problem. I called one of the DMC mechanics,
Jerry
Rine, and he told me that the most common problem is with the U-joint in the
steering collum that is just above the steering rack. He tells me that he
always sprays oil on these two U-joints under the car every time that he
works
on a car. They can been seen if you remove the drivers front wheel. He
also
said that if the boots on the steering rack are in good condition, then
there
should be enough oil in the rack. When the boots go bad, oil can leak out
and
they need to be repalced and new oil put in. He said that oil could be
squirted in and the boot replaced while the rack is on the car. I oiled
these
joints and the bushing at the bulkhead, and the problem was fixed. Jordan

Looking down at the blue socket the common wire goes into the bottom
(horizontal slot), the two remaining leads go to the left and right
vertical sockets.

Brandon,
Horns are regulated by the DOT but I don't have the spec's. The reason for
a high and low tone combination is strictly aesthetic. When you listen to
music, different instruments or voices singing together sounds more
pleasing than a single monotone voice or instrument. As an experiment,
un-plug one of your horns so that only one is operating, you will
immediately hear the difference.

Jeremiah,
Driving with the doors up is not recommended. Driving at low speeds, such
as parades is OK, driving at high speed or over rough roads will not harm
the torsion bars, its the retainers that the struts are attached to that
may be damaged. Replacement of these retainers is involved and costly.
Several states have restrictions on driving with doors open and lastly when
the doors are open they are at "head level", meaning that they could strike
a pedestrian in the head.

There has been several postings about "sticky steering", in some cases
there maybe a problem in the steering system but in most cases it is a
minor problem. Do not have anyone service your rack until you have done
this test. There is a rubber grommet (bushing) at the base of the steering
column where it goes through the fire wall. As the rubber hardens over time
the column sticks when turned and makes the steering wheel stick, it is
sometimes associated with a squeaking noise. To determine weather or not
this is you problem give the bushing a shot of WD-40, if the problem goes
away you have found the problem. The WD-40 or any other lubricant is a
temporary fix, the problem will return, the solution is to replace the
bushing.

FYI: Last November, I 'requested' that amazon.com locate Stainless Steel
Illusion for me. Well, a perfect copy just arrived today for only $99! It
took awhile, but I must say I was impressed with their service. I've
probably spent over $3000 in books with them over the past 12 months, and
they've always amazed me.
Also, has anyone notified the press in Cincinatti or Columbus in regards to
our gathering? Will anyone be available to drive ahead of the warehouse
caravan to get us passing on the highway? These video clips would be great
for the dmcnews website.

Hi all!
I was wondering if any owners out there would share their experience

insuring their DeLoreans. I'm interesting in owning one but before I go on
the big hunt for one I'd like to know how insurance companies view
DeLoreans. I have this fear that if it got totalled or stolen my insurance
would only give me $1000 or something crazy like that. Thanks a bunch. :)

I am the fourth owner of my '81 Delorean. I have been considering

the relays due to a problem with the A/C short cycling and because of

horror stories I've heard regarding fires starting in this area. I

I have? The A/C was just redone (converted to 134a) by the last owner,
so I am pretty sure the charge is OK.

The side impact protection comes from the high sill - present because of
the gullwing doors, but it's that and not the doors that give the
protection. (Well, of course having the doors down will offer more
protection than thin air :-)
Driving with the doors open is okay at slow speeds, but going fast enough
to allow the doors to get blown about in the wind will put a strain on the
hinges, though someone else might be able to answer as to if this in turn
strains the torsion bar. I don't know.

The very first episode of Matlock's third season (1988-1989) was called
"The Lemon" and it's synopsis says:
Matlock's attitude toward his new neighbor Les sours when
Les (Don Knotts) is accused of murdering the used-car dealer
who sold him a lemon.
I assume this is the episode with the DeLorean. I am surprised that it
was made so long ago . . . the DeLorean was just a few years old!
Unlike The Simpsons, I could not find a newsgroup, discussion page, or
broadcast schedule for Matlock. This will make it difficult to figure out
when "The Lemon" might be shown, and I am sure some of us would like
to tape it.
I have never seen the episode myself, but it is obvious that this story
must feature a few exaggerated gags at the DeLorean's expense. As I
said last time this came up, if they had portrayed the DeLorean as an
ordinary car that never needed any special care and attention, we
DeLorean owners would have laughed at their ignorance.

I don't think he is going to harm the torsion bars at all. BUT, doing that
is really bad for the lower strut mount. The mount is a weak design anyway.
most cars show signs of bending and some even break. So, I would guess that
if he does this often, then the same is more pronounced on his car. Also,
if
he hits many pot holes or bumps in the road, there is a chance of springing
the door or getting it out of alignment. If safety is your concern, then
just
get a Bricklin :-) Sorry guys, Its still my favorite toy.

It is common to see DeLoreans driving with their doors up in a parade. I
have done that myself. Of course a parade is very slow, literally walking
speed, and has almost no chance of a side impact collision. For daily
driving I wouldn't dream of leaving my doors up simply because it is so
unsafe.
It takes a tough tree to put a scratch on stainless steel, but scrapes are
possible and they do happen now and then. It seems silly to invite them
by driving with the doors up.
Unless he is driving over bumpy roads, with the doors flapping like
buzzard wings, your friend's torsion bars are probably safe. They don't
care if the doors are open or closed, as long as they stay put.
Your friend's greatest risk might be to his windshield. The
double-wishbone DeLorean frame provides very little torsional stiffness,
relying on those doors as important structural members. When they are
closed they limit how far the body can twist. If the body twists a little
too
much, like driving over a bump with the doors up, the windshield can
crack in half!

Are you for real? How long has he been driving with the doors up?
I'd think after a swift turn or a bump in the road the struts would pull
out of the top, or at least bend something so bad that the doors
won't close correctly. If this isn't a joke, please do the world a favor,
take his keys and issue a severe lambasting.

I have a question concerning the rear side windows that I have
not read any information on. My rear windows (the ones in the engine
compartment) need to be reattached. One of them is completely out and
the other is about to join it. The only information that I have is from
my workshop manual that basically says to remove the rear quarter panels
to install them. Is there an easier way? Has anyone out there
performed this task? I would be interested in getting any information
that would help me re-attach these items.

Just a quick question...all the DMCs I have seen in person have the
raised "DeLorean" on the back bumper in the same color as the bumper.
However, in a book I saw one where the "DeLorean" was painted white, and
this is also on a D that was posted for sale on the list. Was this from
the factory this way, or did someone paint it themselves?

It's about time for many Delorean owners to head for Cincinnati. Some are
traveling in groups and others are going solo, with many picking up people
along the way. One meeting spot that has come about in just the last few
days
is going to be the Indy 500 Speedway Museum, which is located inside the
Indy
Raceway/Track in Speedway, Indiana. Any one or group who is going thru Indy
on
the way to Cincinnati is welcome to join in. We presently have about 8 to
10
cars comming in from all different parts of the country. We plan on meeting
at
the museum at about noon, doing a tour of the muesum and then leave for
Cincinnati about 2 pm. This will get us to Cincinnati in time for the dinner
at the Montgomery Inn. As I said, anyone interested is more then welcome.

I might explain that this site has been active sense 1996. The problem with
it is that it is very limited in it's capacity to handle the number of
visitors at any given time, by the nature of what it does. The DMC area is
all set up but still linked threw the Full Totalimmersion Index system. I
hope to have it split off by Thursday, with all the reservation holders
having automatic access using their e-mail address as an access code. I
hope to have the DMC-Man direct access working by Thursday.

My friend just purchased a DeLorean ('81, automatic). It needs some
work...not a whole lot though. One thing that he wants to do is have
remote power doors. Sure, this could be something as simple as "push a
button and the doors unlock", bute he wants more. What he is wanting is
to have two buttons on the remote key fob. One OPENS the drivers door
and the other OPENS the passenger door. I'm talking "unlock and
automatically push the door to its full open position." Is this
possible? Has anyone done this? If so, please email me with info or
suggestions for him. Thanks in advance.
