I'm a little behind on my DML reading so I apoligize if this is too late =
to help you. The reason the bolts get stuck in the DeLorean engine so =
often is the engine is aluminum and the bolts are steel. Try using a =
pentrant on the bolts instead of a lubricant. WD-40 is ok but it's =
primarily a libricant. Something like liquid wrench would work alot =
better. Also, heat is useful but remember that aluminum dissipates the =
heat to the entire part much quicker than steel. When you are heating =
the aluminum part, you basically have to heat the whole part before you =
get much expansion. You may want to use something hotter than propane. =
Try a MAP torch. It's hotter than propane but not hot enough to melt =
the aluminum.

I recently wrote to tell you guys about my recent purchase. At the time I
thought I stole
the car. Although the price was still extremely fair, I am wondering
about
the car's
actual mileage. The odo reads 34K miles, but for example the auto trans
shifter
knob is rather shiny where I would expect it to still be textured. The
front spoiler looks like it
has never seen a kicked up pebble. My lambda counter reads 113, and I'm
not
sure what
the hell this means. I think I saw some stuff in back issues, so just
ignore me if it's in there.
Any other semi-reliable methods of determining actual mileage? It seems
to
me that with
the finite number of spare parts available, and the occasional purchase
of a
used original
equipment part, it's difficult to gauge actual mileage. Any suggestions?

Hi all. I have found a D (#812) that I am interested in and would
like
to mention a few details about the car. I know you can't say much without
seeing it but here it goes. First of all the speedo doesn't work and
hasn't
worked since 39 miles. It is funny that he has the parts to fix the
speedo,
but has failed to do so. The owner approximates 30,000 on the car due to
him
replacing 1 set of tires, but he is the 2nd owner and he said the tires he
recieved the car with were Bridgestones (not the NCT's). I wonder if the
milage is not double or triple that since the pedals are quite worn as is
the
shifter boot and the seats, even the steering wheel is a bit worn. Is
there
any way to check the milage? Second, the frame is in great condition
except
for rust formed on the cross members. Is this anything to worry about?
When he moved the car for a test drive, there was some greenish liquid on
the
garage floor. However it didn't have the consistency of antifreeze and
did
not come from the overflow. He had told me he had changed the antifreeze
just
a week ago. Any ideas on this? I am happy with every other aspect of
the car
and other than those target areas the car is mechanically sound. I would
appreciate any ideas/comments on these descriptions.

two other cars when I first purchased it. AAA of Missouri has given me
great rates on the car. I have full coverage with $1000
deductibles/towing/rental cars/medical/etc. for less than $46 per month.

I have decided to upgrade the tires on my car to the Yokohama
Intermediates. The ones I am taking off are "Bridgestone Steel Belted 60"
(no other line name) manufactured in 1986. They have probably been driven
no more than 8K miles, are the proper 195-60HR14 and 235-60HR15 sizes and
have a lot of tread left on them. There is starting to be a tiny bit of
cracking, but not too bad (hey - they ARE 12 years old). If someone needs
a cheap (pay shipping or pick them up free) set of tires to get them
through times of low cash, please write me back privately. I'll give it a
week or two and then they go to the tire recyclers. I'm in the Chicago
area.
Other tire talk - the Goodyear Eagle GTIIs mentioned a few days ago,
while still available, may be in short supply and have apparently been
manufacture-discontinued by Goodyear. If you want 'em act fast. They are
also not appropriately speed rated (i.e. S is less than H - go figure/see
below) but that is probably not a real issue for most of us. Mine will
probably never see 100 mph. The Yokohamas from Tire Rack
<www.tirerack.com> are $430/set including Fedex shipping. The Goodyears
are a LOT less expensive (less then $300/set). Talking to the guy - they
sure recognize these as Delorean tire sizes. My local retail store wanted
$590 for the same Yoko tires.
FYI tire ratings - The DeLorean was originally supposed to carry H-rated
tires. Funny how the letters don't go in order of speed rating.

T=118 MPH, 190km/h
U=124 MPH, 200km/h
H=130 MPH, 210km/h
V=149 MPH, 240km/h

One question - where on earth did you find a hose barb with that fine
metric thread on it? I also found that 5/16 heater-grade hose and 5/16
T-fittings are not exactly everyday parts store items, although I did
find them. When I asked for 5/16 heater hose at the local NAPA store, the
guy brought out a 50' box, with 5' left, that had been manufactured in
1992. Not a fast-moving item, I guess. I may be giving Arnie a call this
week....
Otherwise - it looks like an elegantly simple solution to a long-standing
problem. Since I am in the process of putting my cooling system back
together, this would be as good a time as any to give it a try.

I had my center console out to install a new stereo EQ and while I was =
at it, I replaced all my A/C panel bulbs while I had it apart. Now, =
however, my fan speed switch doesn't work. It was working fine before I =
replaced all the bulbs so I figured that the switch came apart from the =
connector. Today I checked it and its hooked up. I took a test light =
and went through all the speeds 1,2,3, & 4 and I have power from the =
connector. I don't think I have a bad switch. Is there anything else I =
could have knocked lose back there??? The relays and fuse are also fine =
so all I can figure is that something's lose or the switch went bad. =
The reason I'm wondering about a lose connection is because I really =
don't want to pull out the center console again if I don't have to. Any =
help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!

I agree that the interior of the Delorean has held up well, but the
wood-laden interior would give it more of a "luxury" car appeal. It's not
really styled to be a luxury car, but once you're inside, it feels like
one, so why not make it look like one on the inside too? <g> I'm not a
big
fan of wood dash/consoles in cars, but I'd love to see how it turns out.
However, I do feel as though the core components of the interior are
behind
the times (Gauge cluster/Clunky switches and knobs/shaft-style radio)....

I had mine out last summer and don't recall removal being a problem. As I
remember, it is only held in by the 4 brackets that also serve as top row
hooks for the cargo net. Once they are removed, you can pull the panel
out. Mine was tightly fit into the space, so didn't fall out of it's own
volition.

As I was flipping through channels on Saturday and I caught a 20 second =
piece that VH-1 did during their Pop-up Video's show. It appeared that =
the theme of this episode was the '80s and "car" things. They showed a =
couple of DeLoreans and made a comment that the factory closed in '82. =
Then they showed somebody interviewing JZD. Lastly, they had a DeLorean =
with the doors up and somebody making a comment about how it looked like =
a James Bond car.
Did anybody else see this?

BTW, it worked quite well. Recently Joe Steuben (JSteuben@xxxxxxx) put
one
on his automatic and is pleased with it. Another BTW, I had also put an
engine oil cooler on my D as so has Joe and we both got those from Teri
Jennings as well. The engine oil cooler makes up a bit for the wimpy
original radiator. I do not have one on my "new" D because I have the
triple core brass radiator on it and believe me that is a very good
investment.

Sounds exactly correct. 113 is 113% of 30K miles OR 30K X 1.13 which
is somewhere around 33,9XX miles :-)

Well, The other connectors are on the fan motor and resistor panel.
I suppose that you could have pulled one of these connectors off
while working under the dash. but, thats my best guess without
actually checking everything with a meter.

Its referred to as the rear "Bulkhead assembly". Its basically plywood
and
is in three pieces. The center section is held in with screws and can be
removed
if you need to remove the wiring harness. As for the other 2 big panels,
they are
glued in place with a very very strong GREEN glue !! I have removed then
once
and ended up breaking the boards to get them out. BUT, if you don't tear
them up
too bad, just trace them out on some new plywood and paint it black !

Marc, Just took mine out last night. The rear carpeted area which runs
vertical to the fuse box area (up and down) and has the cargo net hooks
at the
top is easily removed. At each of the hooks (should be 4 each) look
underneath and you will see a screw with a metal guide. Remove all 4
screws.
Then pull the top of the entire piece, carpet, wood and all towards you
slowly. On the bottom of the board (behind the carpet and wood) are two
hangers which attach to two hooks mounted to the rear firewall. Once you
have
pulled the board down enough to clear the area which holds the rear
window,
pull up on the board and it will release itself from the two hangers. It
is
now out. BILL

That green fluid is most likely anti-freeze. Remember that the radiator
is in the front and there are many hose clamps in the system. To help
verify the mileage, look at the lambda counter, the numbers represent
the percent of 30,000 miles, ie: 100 = 30,000 miles, 110 = 33,000
miles. This may not be accurate though, the angle drive at the front
left wheel is notorious for failing from lack of lubrication. Good luck

It may be a long shot, but you could call D1 (1-800-DMC HELP) and see if =
they sold any parts to the previous owner. I haven't dealt with them in =
quite a while but before they would send out some parts, they would ask =
for the VIN number and the mileage.

I've had my car for 2 months (81' 5 speed) and after reading the
past messages regarding tires concluded that the cars road
wander was due to the tire sizes. I have Goodyear GT's 205/
60-14 and 245/60-15s on the car. I have decide to go back
to the spec sizes just haven't picked out a brand yet. But
reading through the back issues of Delorean World, vol. 2
no. 3, the tech advisor recommended going to 1 tire size
larger to improve "driving pleasure". What do I do now? Am I
correct to change the tires or could the road wander be due
to another problem. Thanks for your help.

I think I mentioned the wrong thing in my last post. You guys just have
to
ignore me. The part you are talking about is held by the hooks on the
top
and sits on 2 metal hangers behind it. You just remove the screws from
the
top and
tilt the thing toward you and lift it from the hangers.

Well, if the angle drive or spedometer cable was broken at some point,
the lambda counter will also read low. It is driven off of the spedo
cable.

Re various letters concerning the upkeep of our Stainless Steel De =
Lorean bodies, I have owned my car for just a year now so do not have a =
lot of experience but I will comment about MY own experiences, for what =
its worth.
My brother had an "umbrella Corporation" in Hawaii, where one of his =
company's was a Restaurant Supply business. As such they sold =
Stainless Steel equipment for restaurants. They had done research on =
various chemicals and ended up with several they could =
recommend....however the best they had found to date was one called =
"Reflection" by Paulsen & Roles Laboratories. I have found it is =
available in most Commercial and Industrial Cleaning Supply stores. In =
most stores it was the ONLY one available. Locally, it comes in a 15 =
ounce spray can for about $7.00. It has no Acids or abrasives. No =
rubbing is required. You put on a small amount and spread it around. =
The container says it is for Institutional, Commercial and Industrial =
use.

important too. When I bought my car, I took it right to Arnie Brandon, =

friendly evaluation. He had in his nicely equipped garage everything =
needed for the upkeep of the De Lorean....he bought his first car new =
and has been very active ever since. I got two pads of 3M Scotch-Brite =
hand pads from him. These were what he had always used. Since that =
time I got a carton of 10 from an Industrial Supply Company. They are =
described as Heavy Duty Tan Hand Pads. These are # 7440. They show a =
chart on the side of the box and list them as Most Aggressive to Least =
Aggressive. This one is the second down from the MOST aggressive end =
of the scale. I see Lee suggests the next one down the line (#7446) =
as a little LESS aggressive and I am sure that would be fine too and =
maybe a little less touchy in using it. Of course I think everyone =
knows you DO NOT let that pad go sideways with the grain of the SS at =
all. ALWAYS rub parallel with the grain only. =20
I am pretty much a newcomer at all of this, but enjoy researching these =
things and keeping up my De Lorean the best I know how.=20

Curves
handling at high speed is Viper weaknesses. The owner of the 928 did
catch up
to the Viper at the curves on fast driving, but there was a straight way

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a on hand experience (or by
ownwership),
the difference and comparion on handling between a Delorean versus a
Porche
928? How do they compare? Do the Porche have a better handling
qualities,
etc? No I am not going to sell the "D" and buy the "928". If I wanted
one, I
would have brought one, if not three. I don't like them much. Several of
my
friends have 928s. Because of their "brag", I got on the 928 site, just
to
see the "mentality" of the 928 site. Very informative on technical
subjects
other then the 928.
I myself have sat in many 928s for short duration rides, but never long
and
very fast speeds with curves. I never driven one, even though I been
offered.
I don't like to drive a car under someone's ownership. Can't open it up
and
do what is necessary to experience the car. I do not like to abuse some
one's
pride and joy.
So, anyone out there?

speaking of angle drives, I am on number 4!
I may need to get an auto angle drive installer installed?
I am waiting for the support kit in hopes that this will cut down the
drive replacements rate.
So far, pot holes and a curb have accounted for two, rust for one third.
I have been thinking of getting a bicycle wheel and attaching it to the
rear and measuring speed and distance with it instead of getting half a
dozen more angle drives.???

I recently bought a set of what was advertised as Fred Locketts lowered
springs and realized upon inspecting them yesterday that I have no way of
knowing whether or not they are lowered or stock. Does anyone have a set
of stock springs that are NOT installed that they would measure for me so
I can compare it against these that I have? Is this an accurate way to
tell? I just don't want to go to the effort of installing these and then
find that it hasn't changed the ride height.

My car also had "road wander". I talked to one of the Delorean
mechanics of great experience, (Jerry Rine) and he told me that a common
problem is that one of the bars which hold the rear tires could be
lose. I checked, and it was lose. I tightened this up and it solved my
problem. To find this support member:
1) it is the member which starts from the rear wheel and angles towards
the front of your car. It also is the member which has shims which are
added or removed to change the toe in of the rear wheel.
2) it is mostly covered up by a sheet metal plate which is triangle
shaped and can be easily removed by taking out the few screws.
3) after removing the plate you will see that you could have checked the
bolt for tightness without removing the plate. The bolt is forward of
the engine and is near the middle of the car. Their is a bolt for each
wheel.
4) if the bolt is lose, then you need to have the alignment of the wheel
checked, as a shim could have easily fallen out. Alignment shops have
extra shims.

Subject: DML: Temperature Switch Fix
I've read previously that some fellow DeLorean owners were having =
trouble with their cooling fans coming on right at the 220 degree mark. =
I may have found a fix to this. My DeLorean had been getting up to 220 =
degrees before my cooling fans would kick on so I bypassed the temp =
switch so the fans would run constant. I figured I would rather burn up =
a fan than an engine any day. Recently this had bothered me and had =
heard that Rob Grady sold a switch that would kick the fans on at 210 =
degrees. (By the way, I've had my cooling fans running constant for 3 =
years now with no problems) When I went to install the switch, I noticed =
that the existing switch (inserted in the cooling pipe) was at an angle. =
Just for the heck of it, I loosened the pipe and made it so that the =
new switch would face straight down. Now my cooling fans come on barely =
above the second mark (around 195 degrees I guess) A DEFINITE =
improvement from 220. Now I'm not sure if it was the better switch or =
the angle of the pipe (or both) but if you're still having this problem, =
you may want to try this fix.

Has anyone converted their R12 A/C system over to the new
enviornmentally safe R134a. I was just in the local K-Mart last night
and found a R134 conversion kit containing a bottle of ester base oil
and three bottles of R134 refrigerent. Kit contains all new fittings
that attach to your current fittings permanently. I've read in other
articles that you must purge the old mineral base oil from the system
first but the directions with the kit don't mention this. And you
don't need a license to buy it]]]] I'm going to try it on my
daughters car first since that one hasn't had a charge since we
bought it and replaced the engine.
