From what i heard on the PRV engine's limits you need to look at a
different engine if you intend on running this type of boost and fuel
you will blow that PRV shy high.

Just trying to explore my options. It turns out that the check valves had
rusted to the seats in the master cylinder. I cleaned all the rust out and
now it works fine. The rubber was in surprisingly good condition as well.
Thanks to everyone for your responses, I appreciate it greatly. You have no
idea how much your tech papers and archives have helped me out. :) Thank
you...

Why would you be stuck with buying one from one of the vendors? At least,

Dear Bob,
Is it not also true that the dies were siezed, "sold" and sunk as
"weights" for a British Government funded boondoggle involving setting
nets around sewage outlets? The idea was to keep the preditors out so
the good fish could be caught easily. Problem is the preditors easily
found their way in and soon outnumbered the catch. Another good use for
valuable tax dollars.
I suspect there were Government operatives/agendas in this as it all
happened much too quickly and vengefully. If all they wanted were
weights, rocks with eyeloops fitted were all too available. This was a
targeded 'ironic' disposal of the dies and not the kind of thing a
thoughtful liquidator would have done with one of the most valuable
assets of the DMC operation. Knowing the Irish were behind what might
have been a successful operation, sinking the dies was the surest way to
eliminate the chance of a "comeback". "Pioneers" often take the arrows
and a reorganization might have been possible to save the DeLorean
effort. Without the dies, it was a whole lot harder.

Subject: New Sound Progress! The noise is gone.
I can give you a better idea now. Here's a great story for all of you to enjoy. Yesterday I was running on fumes....
I work (in my 2 weeks notice now) at the front desk for a hotel here in Pensacola. Well, we had an airline crew who had left half an hour ago (say it was around 5:30pm). One of the crew members had forgotten their airline badge. Without that badge, their flight could not leave. We tried getting the shuttle driver to take it to the airport, but there was no driver. So me and another coworker had to make a decision as to who was going to take the badge to the airport. I said I would go because it would be much easier for them to spot the DeLorean before they spotted his 94 Camry. So off I go to the airport. As I'm approachinig about 1 mile away, I go to hit the gas: "sputter sputter cough vra-vra-vra-sput vroom sput" goes my car. I had to park in the middle of the road and then she began to idle normally again. Having just had the transmission rebuilt, I was a little edgy about this. I rejoin traffic and the car drives normally. As traffic began to brake, so did I, and then
traffic began to accelerate, so I tried to accelerate with traffic and the same symptoms kicked in - the car nearly died in the middle of the road.
To Best Buy's parking lot I made it. I was about 1 mile away from the airport. I go into Best Buy looking for the only other DeLorean owner here in town: Dmc93n99. A store representative tells me he's gone to lunch (7:00pm).... I am 1 mile from the airport with a badge that must be delivered or the flight does NOT takeoff, my DeLorean will not drive now, and the one person that could help me was not at work...
These are the times you stop and breathe for a minute, look around, get a grip on the situation and make the best of things at hand. I said a quick prayer to my Lord and just basically begged from my heart for Him to help me. After that, I began to think to myself "Well, maybe...just maybe the DeLorean is out of gas". So off I begin to walk from Best Buy to go through the main shopping mall (they are connected together), out their parking lot, down the street to a gas station to purchase a 1 gallon gas container and fill it up with 91 Mid-premium. As I begin my walk before I even reach the shopping mall, I see Dmc83n99 headed my way. I couldn't believe it; I was floored of all the times to see him right then and there. After saying outloud "My savior!" out of pure joy; I describe to him the symptoms from being on the road to having the car in the parking lot. We go to start the car "VROOMMM-spdgdgjdsjflsslan clunk!" it goes. He says in the most nonchalant way I think I've
ever heard him say, "Dude, you're out of gas". So I describe to him my scenario, and he was very understanding when I asked him "Could you do me a favor?". He says "What's that?" and in my most sarcastically demanding way, I put out my hand and say "Keys!". He was very gracious and lent me his car (Camaro). He asked me, "You ever driven a Camaro?" "No." He looks at me, "Way more power then you're used to, dude". "Don't worry, I'll take it easy on it, man".
So out I walk to his Camaro. Now keep in mind, this guy works as 2nd in command (I've inferred) of all of this Best Buy store. This guy has all SORTS of goodies on this car. Buttons, switches, multiflashers - you name it, it's somewhere on this car. I have never driven a Camaro, and this was a newer car on top of that. So I get the alarm deactivated, climb in. Place key in the ignition, start it up. A "VRUM" kicks in..not VROOM, VRUM. Oh man, it was awesome. I put it in reverse and just barely tap the accelerator. "RRRRRRRRRRTTTTT!!!!" go the tires! I put it in drive and just ride with it. Off to the airport I go, give that person their badge at LAST, and back I go to a gas station for a red canister and fuel...
So I get to a "Citgo/Tom Thumb", one of those big gas stations with like -12 pumps or so. I get a canister, and fuel up 1 gallon of 91 Mid-Premium. In the Camaro I go with the gas canister securely fastened. OH YEAH - this whole story...it's been raining. I don't mean a 5 minute drizzle; I'm talking a thorough, downpour. Not a hurricane but not April showers either. So back I go to Best Buy, and I placed the gas canister in the DeLorean (I almost walked inside with it - I can only imagine the attention I would have garnered doing that!). I give 99 his keys back with many thanks and much praise, and I walk to the DeLorean for the true test of the night.
I go outside and open the trunk. Of course this is the time the struts decide not to work. So with holding the trunk with my back, I undo the fuel cap and begin to place the nozzle into the fueling tank. One problem, the nozzle is TOO short. I pull a "MacGuyver" and take apart my Pilot G2 pen on me to open the fueling area so the fuel can go in without stopping up. Once I got all the one gallon of fuel in, I placed the canister back in the DeLorean, and I walk into Best Buy and head to their bathroom to clean up. My leather coat is soaked, my shoes are almost squeaking with each step; I'm walking next to $1000+ TV's dripping wet...I just prayed nothing "mysteriously broke" while I was there. I get to the bathroom, wash my pen off completely with soap and water as well my hands. turn to the towel distributor - no towels. With a soft sigh and maybe a little bit of a whimper I head back to the DeLorean with every prayer in the world in my heart. I get in, sit a minute, say a
couple prayers, and crank. The moment of truth - crank,crank,vra-vra-vroom-clunk! I almost freak, and then I remembered 99 telling me it could take a couple of tries before it fires up. I try again "Crank,crank,crank,vra,vra,vraddatah-VRROOM!" I softly sighed, thanked the Lord for getting me through the night, and I softly wiped away the one or two tears I had on my face.
So back I drove to the same Citgo. This had been a long long night; it was time to enjoy the better sides of owning a DeLorean. Pop, the doors both open; I go to fill the car with 91 Mid-premium. I get aout four or five guys at different times admiring her, talking to me, enjoying the car. It was great. Went to a chicken restaurant for a well-deserved dinner. I called into work and told them to clock me out; I'm not coming back. Then I went to see one of my friends while she was at work. I asked her if she wanted a ride in the DeLorean. She jumped at the opportunity (so did I 8) !!), and I took her for a 10 minute drive in the car. I went home, got in big trouble for not telling my lady where I had been or what had happened (and she was right; I should have called). I let her win, konked out for 5.5 hours or so, and here I am at work again typing this now.
Wow, what a night. I'm still recovering from it. I can't wait to tell that one to my grandkids! I'll still have the car to prove it ;)!

IMMEDIATELY RETURNED THE CAR. ALMOST 4 WEEKS LATER I GET CALLED AND TOLD
THAT THE REPAIRS ARE FINISHED AND THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH. THE
ADDITIONAL COST IS NOW AN ADDITIONAL $1500.
DOES THIS COMPUTE?
>>>>>>>>>
I don't know much about the insurance issue, but i do know the transmission.
The parts they ordered would have been about $125 cheaper from PJ Grady, and
they would be the correct and highest quality part. But they probably didn't
know they could get parts for them there, and i'm sure they would have been
more than happy to use your source if you would have told them you only want
parts from a DeLorean vendor, of which you would supply contact information.
I had no idea what i was doing when i first replaced my clutch master and
slave, and i would say that it probably took me about 4 hours including learning
how to bleed it. i would hope they know better than I, so do they charge
$110/hr for labor? what IS their hourly labor rate?
I had the transmission dropped, cracked open, cleaned up, replaced the roll
pins, and had a centerforce clutch installed for about $1000, parts and labor.
again, what is their hourly rate? remember that when you brought it back,
they had to do a diagnosis so that will take more time to figure out what the
problem is.
Since this is a 'high end' shop, by which i suppose you mean they specialize
in Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls, Maserati, etc, i'm sure they have a high labor
rate but they probably also know enough not to make things worse (such as when
dealing with the fuel system). For the clutch and transmission, i'm sure there
other other places better than a Texaco but not as specialized as a high end
shop. Try to find a place that has been around a long time, has a very clean
shop and waiting area, knowledgable staff, clean exterior and curb appeal, and
they probably are booked solid because the best shops get around through word
of mouth. make sure you negotiate warranty and satisfaction standards before
they start or do any work at all.
Anyway, back to your problem. Does the transmission feel like brand new
again? the only part they didn't replace was the clutchline with a stainless
braided variety. You should probably get this done too, if you haven't had it
done yet, especially in the heat of Florida. For that price (which is probably
fair because i'm sure their labor rate is high but posted, and you probably
told them to 'fix my car', which implies you want them to do whatever is prudent
and necessary. remember, the typical Ferrari owner has deep pockets and is
used to a high bill for repairs. YOU came to THEM, so should they believe you
to be any different?), i'm sure the transmission is buttery smooth now. You
got what you told them to do, and you probably could have gotten it done
cheaper, but legally, you have no basis for non-payment, unless you already agreed to
a cap on the repair bill, which they could have exceeded. The real test is,
are there still transmission problems? If not, you had better give them what
you owe them.
In the future, i would take a few days to talk to other owners on the list in
your area and find another safe but cost-effective repair shop. Surely they
are out there! But I really dont think the place you went to did anything
wrong or charged you astronomical prices. Sounds about right for the Miami area.
Good Luck,
Andy

Subject: Re: Supercharger help
Mark,
You've asked a number of technical questions of which answers require entire
books to be written. You definitely need to do some research and gain a
thorough understanding of what changes arise in the combustion process when
going to a boosted intake system. You'll find opinions here on the list, some
with credentials and others merely speculative but there is so much more to
this than a few simple paragraphs on the list can cover. An excellent source
for books on super and turbocharging is www.classicmotorbooks.com. I notice
their web site is under construction right now. Their email is
mbibks(at)motorbooks.com..and their phone number is 1-800-826-6600. I strongly
suggest you gain as much technical information as possible before tearing
into this project. As a start I'd recommend keeping boost levels below 7 psi
unless you plan to do some radical engine modification such as reducing
compression with forged, dished, pistons. Ignition modifications are less
than perfect for a boosted intake when you're dealing with an odd firing
engine like the PRV. Intercooling is a benefit but with a rear engine car
that's creating a vacuum like atmosphere in areas around the engine
compartment while at speed, they can end up being only of marginal benefit
without some modifications to the area surrounding the intercooler.. You
will need a wastegate to maintain boost at a proper level. There are a few
tricks to getting a bit more fuel from the K-Jetronic system but you really
need a complete understanding of how the system works and an equally
thorough understanding of the super charging process. As I said, there's more
to it that a couple of paragraphs on the list can explain. Get a good book
on supercharging and read it thoroughly before you start.

This might sound dumb, but what if you just kept after it? :)
I mean, eventually, all of the steel that is in there will have
rusted, and if you kept after it with the sandpaper, it will be
removed. Heck, it might even help to accelerate this rusting
process. After all the steel has turned to rust, apply some naval
jelly or the like and then sand it away.

I just wanted to give High praise to the Design team that put
together the the latest issue of DW I'm thuroughly impressed!
This is truly a first class presentation issue.
For those who aren't DOA members, All I can tell you is that the
cover design uses the same type of Black heavy paper that was used in
the original large DMC promotional Booklet. It is embossed with a
large version of the DOA logo highlighted in silver.
Also as an interesting tidbit D1 included a DVD with a 2.5 minute
commercial for them. From all the different up close angles that they
shot the Featured DMC,I would Have to say it is as FLAWLESS a
Delorean as I have ever seen. Irreguardless of anyones personal views
about Mr. Bernstein. He does offer A first class product to those who
can afford it.
Just my 2 cents

Of course if you take your car to a non-DeLorean Service center, it's
logical to assume that the shop is going to mark up the parts. That's
part of the business. I don't believe that "regular" car places get
any kind of discount from the vendors, and I would not expect a shop
to pass parts thru at-cost and not even cover shipping.

There isnt much behind the sides. I replaced mine and due to the length,
i bent it downwards in the middle to remove it as I did not want to deal
with removing the sides to get it out. I ended up with the vynal coming
undone, but i just pushed the various hole pieces back into the backboard.

traveled" and go off on your own trying to design things yourself it
takes a lot more time and money than going with what already is
available and works. If you are unfamiliar with this type of thing
then maybe you should consider Island Turbo and their 2 turbo set-up.
They can be reached @ 800-303-1924, This is not a plug, only a
possible option if you are going in this direction. If you are not
doing the actual work yourself but instead are going to have a shop
experiment for you then you should have "deep pockets" as they are
going to be learning on your dime. Also this is a case where "If a
little is good a lot is better" NOT!!!!!! Any boost over 6 PSI will
damage your engine, less if the mixture leans out or the timing is too
advanced. I also don't think an automatic should have forced
induction. The transmission in the Delorean is not robust enough to
live a long time especally if you push it hard. The manual is more
rugged and even it will be damaged by rough handling. No less an
authority than Fred Dellis (of Legend Industries) has said that they
could get all the power out of the PRV-6 that they needed, the weak
point is the transmission. DMC spent MILLIONS with Legend Industries
and they could not get around the transmission problem. The long term
answer (acording to Fred) was that they were planning to get away from
the French and source another transmission and final drive. If you do
boost the engine remember to to something about the vacuum modulater
on the automatic transmission (it need vacuum to soften the shifts).

Subject: DELOREAN FIXED (MY STORY) RE:TRANSMISSION AND CAR INSURANCE
I only hope the shop in South Florida that did the transmission repair is not G.T Car Center in Ft. Lauderdale, they work on exotic cars. Among the many complaints: had my Delorean there for over 2 1/2 months for you guessed it transmission installed, not ever repaired. I installed the clutch myself first took it into the JAG SHOP. Where they told me I had the wrong clutch on the car (I didn't). I don't even think they looked at it as it sat there for 8 weeks same spot back lot (blocked in). I had enough and had it towed to G.T Car Center. Well I waited and waited and waited while I was waiting I noticed another Delorean(hope it was not the one on the list).
Anyway, after they installed the tranny, and $1300 later and other misc. work done. I picked it up but it would not shift into all the gears(just fixed that a couple days ago) so I bought it back. They insisted they would fix it and that it needed a tune-up. Giving them the benefit of the doubt(I won't do that again) I reluctantly gave them permission for the tune-up. Well that turned into fuel problems i.e injectors and a new F.D-I don't think so!
Well 7 weeks later and after seeing my Delorean on a weekly basis getting worse(It didn't even accelerate above idle only stalled and sputtered), it ran fine before! So I told them I was taking it out of the shop. Especially when they tell me they are looking for parts at a nearby junkyard and witnessing the mechanic playing with the 3 brass screws on the top of the butterfly valves in an effort to mask a major problem.
Here's the good part they wanted another $600 for the work. I said what work, almost all the parts I supplied(injectors, C.V boots)! When I told them I was not paying a dime for damaging my Delorean, they called me every name in the book, as I moved my two cars off the property and left! I disputed the 1st charge with the credit card, always use a credit card, and WON!
Morale-DON'T LET ANYONE WORK ON THE FUEL SYSTEM UNLESS YOU KNOW THEY CAN FIX OR REPAIR IT 100% I MEAN 100%.
It took many many months to figure out the problems they caused and could not have done it without the DELOREAN COMMUNITY-THANKS EVERYONE!
Problems:Fuel hoses connected wrong at the fuel pump(OH BOY)-THAT" IT'S
Total blockage of CAT (they did something-enriched the mixture?)
Blockage of valve for dist. advance (silicone in hole of soild. valve) not advancing
New injectors and new seals for intake manifold(ALL)
Readjust throttle linkage (sticking)
NOTE: JUST BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU TAKE YOUR SMALL PIECE OF AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

Subject: Re: The Latest Issue of DW from DOA
I have seen the latest DW too. I also give it high marks for the
craftsmanship and quality. Unfortuantly it is more of a travel log
than a publication for a car club. If you look at the front cover it says
Travel Technical Lifestyle
It is heavy on the Travel and the Lifestyle, very light on the
Technical. I suppose coming from California this is what they
emphacise (sorry for the spelling!). Maybe most of the people in
California don't work on their cars so they have no need for much
technical? What I look for (and I think most other do too) is more on
the technical and the activities of other groups around the country.
It is a shame this fine looking magazine isn't more representitive of
the entire country and the many different types of people that own,
maintain and operate their Deloreans. Not many Delorean owners can
identify with Kevin and Andrea. It is nice to know that even people
like them still like Deloreans too though. I guess we maybe do have
some things in common. Most car club publications have an upcoming
events section. I have to assume that in the world of DW only their
events are worthy of mentioning. Maybe they should have an article on
the world of Deloreans on the Internet. BTW by his own admission Ed
Bernstein does not claim to be a mechanic. Yet he (don't forget he is
also the editor/director) is giving technical advice in the only
technical artice in the magazine. I guess since they are producing
less magazines per year they are going to spend more on each one.
This is all my own opinion and in no way reflects on the DML.

Subject: PJ Grady steering sale....
I just thought I would mention on Rob Grady's site he is selling his steering
racks for a great price now.... I had one of his rebuilt racks put on my car
by my shop about a year and a half ago (car failed inspection). Once I got the
rack put on I then redid my tie rod ends and now have new tires. My car now
drives a like a new car. It handles perfectly around corners and I have
complete confidence in the front end of my car. I have also replaced all my
stabilizer bushings that I bought from Rob as well.
Anyone unhappy with how your car handles should take advantage of this
offer...No, Rob did not pay me for this :-) Just saw the discount on his site and
since I bought one of his racks before I just wanted to pass on how nice my car
now handles...

Does anyone have the DeLorean ski rack? I think it looks pretty interesting
and would like to see some pictures of it, other than the small one on the

Subject: Re: mileage
My car gets roughly 20 city and 30 highway. It's worth noting the automatics don't get as good of mileage as the 5-speeds because of their gear ratios, and lack of a true "overdrive" gear. As probably know the automatics had only 3 gears. My quoted mileages are for my 5-speed car.
To lean the car out remove the airbox which houses the air filter. It is fastened to the intake manifold with 3 bolts. Once it is removed, behind the air intake plenum should be a wire handled rubber plug. Many cars have lost this along the way, and previous owners have found all sorts of ways to plug this hole (most often you will find this opening closed with a screw in those cases). It's worth noting that the car will have a terrible vacuum leak if this hole is not secured. Anyways, after removing the plug you simply stick an allen head wrench down into the hole and you will find the fuel adjustment screw. I can't remember the size of it off the top of my head... sorry. To lean the car turn the screw left, to richen the mixture turn it right. You can test the car by either driving it, smelling the exhaust, or mapping your fuel economy. You'll know if you lean it too much as the car will either die or clatter. Remember a fraction of a turn COULD be all that's necessary to get your mixture just right. Make sure to check your spark plugs after your experimenting to make sure you're not leaning the mixture out too much. Remember cars perform best running slightly lean, but you don't want to barbeque your engine either. Spark plugs can tell you a world of information about what's happening in your engine. I'd look at their current condition before doing anything at all actually. Play with the fuel mixture in small increments until you get your desired result.
Also consider upgrading your ignition system at this time... you'd be absolutely amazed what a new pair of sparkplugs and a new coil will do for your engine. Not only will your car be able to give a more complete burn to the fuel in the cylinder with this, you'll also feel a notable increase in performance, smoothness, and flexibility. Checking your engine timing would also be a good idea at this juncture. Let us know your results, and if we can help you any further.

That's my exact sentiments on the DOA and DeLorean World. I think they've horrifically midjudged their POTENTIAL audience. Almost every DeLorean owner I've ever met has been in their 20s and 30s and are very modest middle class average kind of Joe people. The DeLorean is a fun affordable and very attainable classic/exotic car to them. It stretches most of their budgets to own the car, but they enjoy all of the spoils of ownership just the same. Instead of this main audience, the DOA has chosen a TARGET AUDIENCE... those who are really more interested in a lifestyle than a car. They want to flaunt DeLorean ownership as an experience akin to being a member of an elite country club which has an exclusionary membership policy, but once you're in, it's for life! I really think their only goal with all of this is to try and bolster the value of the car. While I highly disagree with what they think DeLorean ownership is all about, I DO think it's important that we have all views represented of exactly what the DeLorean "experience" is. For some it IS champagne and cavier on the beaches of Santa Barbara, and for others it's all about getting together with your buddies to finally install that part you've been saving up for. That's why I think it's so great that there are a variety of magazines for DeLorean owners that are tailored to different interests. Variety is the spice of life they say, and I for one am glad we have them all.
