Inadequate grounding, both by design and by degredation, is 100% responsible for damaging heat, the magnitude of which is directly related to circuit amperage.
Louis' entire car is grounded with 4 gauge battery cable now -- I don't think heat is going to be a problem in the future (his Fuse #7 was already melted).
IMHO it was unwise to gang the fuel pump onto a single ground wire, shared with the windshield wiper motor among other devices. The inertia switch also is a very inefficient switch, especially for a high amperage fuel pump.
