I agree - great idea.  I floated this idea on the dmctalk site and 
actually attempted to make one myself.  A pic of my version 1 mat is 
posted here. (requires signing in)

I bought more vinyl recently and will attempt an improved, version 2 
this spring.  V1 didn't have any backing and didn't fit perfectly.  I 
used my felt dashmat as a template.  Note - I did not make holes for 
the speakers or to access the glove box.
