I'd say you're right. I will likely never know what caused the fire -- I 
am not an expert, and only an expert would be able to look inside the 
distributor and theorize as to what happened when -- but I know I will 
not take any more chances. That's the widest plug gap I've ever heard 
of. Reducing the gap won't hurt anything, and I couldn't tell a huge 
difference in "performance" from re-gapping spark plugs. My car is not 
very fast: remember, it's an automatic!
I still think the moral of the story is "keep your fire extinguisher 
handy!" :-)
