[DML] Broken Angle Drive = Faulty mileage?

I'm in the process of possibly buying a D. and after reading some of
the responses about towing a Delorean I have a question. When the
angle drive is broken, does the odometer stop counting? I'm assuming
it does, but the whole angle drive issue confuses the hell out of me.
I found a D. with "5,000 original miles" advertised, but when I got
there I found out the angle drive has been broken for almost 5 years.
If so, then there is pretty much no way to ever tell the REAL mileage
of almost any D. considering the frequency of the angle drive
breaking....right? Thanks in advance.
