The symptoms you describe are "classic" for a failing fuel 
accumulator. 
You dropped the fuel pressure to zero by disconnecting the injectors 
and probably created a fuel surge at the next startup so you may have 
caused the accumulator to make movements or incur stresses it might 
not otherwise would have had applied thus causing the internal 
sealing to rupture. Only a new fuel accumulator will cure your ill in 
that case.
Also, it is possible that some contamination occurred at the 
injectors because the feed lines were opened and one or more may be 
leaking down too rapidly. Some fuel cleaner may help here.
To know for sure what is happening in the fuel system you need to put 
the gauges to the fuel system and check it out.
