Hi Chris,
I know of this problem. My car had the same type of cracked plastic 
around the nut.
I had all the pieces inside the cover and after taking the metal nut 
out I glued the parts together with the nut in it.
Then I used thin wire (the kind they use to bind metal netting 
together - approx .5 mm -), wound that a couple of times around the 
plastic and twisted the ends together.
This clamped the plastic in such a way that the metal nut no longer 
could turn itself out of the plastic.
Does not squeek or rattle any longer.
Perhaps a simple solution to your problem?
