Yes, it really does help to find and look at the master cylinder, guess it is the learning curve. ( I can tell you where everything is on a Studebaker)  Reservoir was somewhat low and adding fluid solved the problem.  Light is out.  I'll keep a watch on things as there are no obvious leaks.  I was surprised it needed fluid as the car was serviced in June before I bought it with both front and rear calipers repaired, plus a great deal of other service - I have the invoice.
Thanks for bearing with the basic questions.  I hope to get to Gettysburg next year as I only live 25 miles from there.
