The contacts on the inside of the pressure sender are contaminated. If you were to take it apart you will find a lever moving along a resistance bar of wound wire. The contact is very poor. "Back in the day" we (in Houston) drilled a hole (with a bit stop so as to not go in to far) and sprayed some cleaner on the contacts, put a rubber plug in the hole, covered it with some black silicone, and wa-la, it worked perfectly. As a matter of fact, I still have the original one in my car (drilled and sprayed in probably 1987) and it still works great - actually the needle goes to the last mark before the end of the top scale when cold and hovers around the lowest mark before the bottom of the scale when hot - at idle. I thought Hervey had a replacement for the OEM ones? As far as I know, nearly all OEM's acted up unless cleaned.
