The symptom you describe is typical of worn-out brushes in the fan
motor. Hervy use to say he rebuilds them. The parts can be found but a
proper rebuild requires an armature turn and grove clean and, a bearing
check-up. I have rebuilt several over the years - they are simple to
do. The destruction of the brushes can be accelerated greatly by poor
connections so be sure to check and clean them well, especially the
ground for the fans at the front frame extension.
I've seen postings about the upgrades of both Hervy and Toby Peterson
but I haven't seen how they actually perform. I would suspect the folks
in Arizona or in Houston after a summer there can give some feedback if
any have put them on. I know the original motors were
rather "industrial" but they move some air - maybe more than is needed
but, I like cushion.
