I agree with Ryan - Think of the gesture as a little lubricant to keep the wheels of a polite society spinning. I had a similar issue with a parking lot hit several years ago. My parked car was hit by a carload of teenagers late at night in a motel parking lot. The driver left a note for me with the hotel desk clerk. I made very sure to let the girl who was driving and her parents know that I was very impressed that she left a note.
