Had a vague recollection and went back and found this old posting:

If you have a laser disc version of BTTFIII and do a frame by frame 
right before the train hits the car, you can actually see small 
explosive squibs going off before the train even hits it.  This was 
to help facilitate a nice looking spread of the parts. I had read 
that the car was just a shell with no engine and no fiberglass 
underbody.
