There were not a whole lot of production rear-drive transmissions to 
choose from. I'd presume that DMC went with something off the shelf 
rather than a custom design just for expediency. 
A custom design wouldn't be cost effective unless they were planning on 
hundreds of thousands of units. 
Having dismantled a DMC trans that had been behind a Buick turbo car, 
it showed no evidence of extraordiary wear due to horsepower. I took it 
apart because the shaft nut backed off, AND the guy who built the car 
didn't bother with a pilot bearing on the input shaft.
