I have the actual instrument cluster in my hands with the cable, and 
hosing hanging from it.

The cable housing slides right off, and I am left with the inner 
cable, which on the squared end is still inside the back of the 
speedometer.

Just figured it would pop right out, tried lubricating spray, but it 
is just stuck in there, don't see anything holding it though.

Just weird.
