Hi Dan,
I had a similar problem with a strong gasoline smell in my car last 
year. I was also getting bad gas mileage. I found that my fuel lines 
going from the pump were actually bad and leaking gas. So I ended up 
replacing mine. For some odd reason the mechanic said there was a 
piece of plastic floating in my fuel tank...? But I've had no fuel 
problems since.
