Paul, I'm assumming you have an automatic transmission...
Definately use what the manual recommends.  It still applies - as long
as you don't have an engine/transmission swap.
The drain plugs are indeed like the oil plugs and I think Mr. Hervey
sells the "user friendly" replacement kind.
You will refill the transmission fluid through the transmission
dipstick tube and should use a funnel with a strainer.
There's also your transmission filter, gaskets and final drive to
consider.  The workshop manual covers that.
If you have access to a lift, it's way easier to accomplish and a lot
less messier.
