An urban myth I'm afraid.  Typically bad journalistic  research. (Anything to 
sell newpapers.) 
I had the opportunity of asking Rod Stewart some years ago if he ever owned  
a DeLorean because lots of the employees at the factory were sure he  bought 
one of the gold plated cars - sadly it wasn't true he didn't even own a  
stainless steel one either!

I  came across this article today.  I have never heard that Sinatra
