While scale models of the BTTF Delorean and the steam engine train were used for portions of BTTF 3, Bob Gale and Bob Zemekis talked extensively about the full scale, actual Delorean that was hit by the freight train near the end of BTTF 3 (on the BTTF DVD box set). Bob and Bob mentioned the explosive charge used help the Delorean dismember upon impact with the train engine. If you watch this scene, you can see the explosive charge go off just before impact. They said the train engineer said he always wanted to do that. Along with actual Deloreans and small scale models that were used, several full scale fiberglass mock-ups were also used, such as the one used during the hover scenes, since light weight models were needed to work with the forklift devices for take-off and landings.
