Richard,
Check the back issues to find your answer or call one of the parts suppliers. 
It is possible to open the hood without the cable, may take some time, but 
from someone who has done it, after getting it open you will want to look at 
old issue of Delorean World (Vol.1 Aug. 1983). There is a back up way to keep 
this from ever happening again. I do agree with Ken and Dave that we as 
owners do not want to tell people how to break into our D's. But I understand 
how the blood pressure can rise when this has happened.
To those who want to upgrade the power of the Delorean. Go for it, but 
remember the old adage "The slower you go the longer it lasts!!!" Personally 
I enjoy the power of the Delorean "stock".
