[DML] DOOR LOCK question

Hello List,
Since I bought my car the electronics in the doors have not 
worked(mirror, window, locks etc) My passenger side door wiring harness is 
not hooked up yet but the drivers side is. Is that why the drivers side 
stuff wont work? do both doors have to be hooked up for the locks to work? 
My car never had window switches either. how can I over-ride these to see if 
the motors will move? can I jump them some how?
Also, I have an extra lock solenoid laying in my garage. how can I 
check to see if it works when it is not on the car?
