I replaced my old torn up heat shield with a "home made" stainless pair. I
made two pieces that have the same shape except one is about 1/2" to 3/4"
longer on the bottom side. Using a sheet metal brake, I slightly bent the
extra on the bottom of the long sheet. I then mounted the two sheets in the
car with a washer in-between them to create an air gap. The way I have
theorized this set up is that the rear sheet with the bend (closest to the
muffler) will force air moving below the car up through the gap and out the
engine cover. So, yes the sheet right next to the muffler will really heat
up, but the second sheet on the other side of the air gap (and next to the
belts) will remain cool.

I have been using this for just short of a year without any noticeable
problems, but I am unsure that it works exactly as I have theorized. But
when you look at the rear of the car, it looks really good hanging down like
it does.
