Lorraine,

did you try using the key in the door to unlock it to
get the latch out of the latched position?  let me
know if this works  I had a different problem then
yours a few times. When opening my door the front
latch wouldn't unlatch so I couldn't get the door
open.  TO get past this I had to open the door by
reaching in and pulling up on the door handle and then
pull on the exterior door handle.
