My car did the exact same thing last month.  I had the system evacuated, 
vacuumed, and recharged.  turned out the system had barely enough freon in it to 
operate.  Now it works like a charm.  Take note that I am retrofit for 134A 
however (which blows really damn cold - it MIGHT be a touch warmer than R12 but 
it's enough to freeze your hands off!!!).  I have a couple of O-rings to 
replace still, which is why my level was down.
