The smallest amount of vapor can cause the smell. I have searched
for the source of a similar gas smell for years. The problem I have
had was it comes and goes. I believe it is the gas cap. I put a new
gas cap on two years ago and the smell stopped. Then this year when
I got the car out I noticed it again. When I checked the cap it
seemed loose. I did a little cleaning on the seal and fiddled with
the spring thing on top of the cap seal and so far so good. This
Sunday after a long drive I stopped for gas and noticed a slight
pressure at the cap telling me I'm getting a good seal. Overnight in
the garage and still no gas smell.
